  • In this video I change the oil in my F16 Gearbox on my 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier, this is a nice easy job for a beginner to do.

Great video Steve. Well worth doing. I will be doing it on both my Nova's. Just changed the engine sump gasket on the one. Slowly working my way, through the list of jobs

Thank you Matt, definitely mate! I’ve done the engine gasket quite a few years ago the hardest part is undoing the exhaust to get the sump off. Sounds like you have a nice list of jobs to work through. Cheers.

Hi Steve, enjoyed the video mate, 3rd time lucky with the gaskets which must have been a pain especially with the car still on ramps, still, you got there in the end, cheers mate 👍

Thanks Pete, yeah annoyingly even the online parts catalog I used listed both gaskets depending on the gearbox fitted to your car you can’t just go by that it’s an F16 for example, at least I have the correct one now. Cheers mate.

Interesting video Steve I can't remember the last time I changed the gearbox oil on any of my cars but it must be around 30 years ago🙄I keep meaning to get an engine and gearbox oil change done on my SLK, I've had the car 8 years now but it's never been done in fact I haven't needed to put any oil in my engine in 8 years either as it doesn't use any and it's still a good colour, I think an oil change in my 5 speed auto box would be quite costly🤔
    Cheers Steve👍

Thanks John! Yeah manual gearboxes do get forgotten I don’t think it does much damage if left, automatic gearboxes on the other hand, do need doing as when the manufacturer specifies, not sure if yours would be costly or not I guess it depends on what you need to do as part of the service some of them do have a filter that you need to change and the oil can be expensive but still cheaper than a new 2nd hand gearbox. You maybe lucky and could get away with a spill and fill like on my MK3 Cavalier Automatic that’s a spill and fill no filter to worry about nice and easy job todo as well.

Hi Alan, thanks mate! Definitely go for it! It shouldn’t be any different just the shape of the sump, the gasket that was wrong for mine may fit yours, they are not expensive and definitely an easy job for you to do 😊 go for it!!
