It was a birthday present for my grandpa back in 2010 or so but after he sadly died, the cactus came to me. Yep, I have had similar experiences with lot's of soil particles getting caught inbetween the hairy spines. I carefully wash them out with a gentle spraying and flushing of water (using the hose, with lowish water pressure) ...outside, in the garden on a not too cool day. Hope you are succesful. Hi there! I can understand your concerns and worries ahead of the coming winter, but you shouldn't worry too much as most cacti are extremely adjustable and low in their maintenance requirements. As long as you can keep them dry, in a frost-free location, say above 40-45 F then they will also not require a lot of light. If they are dormant they will hardly photosynthesize. Before i got my greenhouse I kept my collection during the winters in a dark, cool basement for several months every year and had my grow lights on between 6-8 hours a day (i automated the timer to be on during the nights, as electricity costs were lower then, at least where i lived). I would definitely have at least one electric fan running to ensure good air circulation at all times. Again, i had a timer that switched on for 30 minutes every hour. What are the minimum winter temperatures likely going to be inside your garage?

@@cactusjoe hey, thanks for the reply. I am going to monitor garage temps. Fan and light timer advice is great. If garage is too cold I can tent it, or bring them in. If they are in they are going to be 70 degrees ish so I don't know if they'd stay Dormant. Thank you

Hmm, you are right, likely they would indeed not go into dormancy if temps around 70 F or higher.

I suppose you could bring those plants / cacti inside that are fine with, or even welcome slightly milder winter temps, like many cacti from Brazil, Baja Calif., etc. And the others could stay dry and cool in the garage. Do you have the option of putting up a small electric radiator / heater with fan, that could temporarily kick in if frost were to come? I always had this type of "frost emergency kit" on standby or installed when weather forecast reported potential freezes. Just helped me sleep a bit better, haha👍😉😁🌵🌵❄️

@@cactusjoe woow, thank you for the attention. So yeah, that was my thought, make a little tent of sorts with the grow light, temperature monitors, and emergency electric space heater. I think with the grow light in there and the plastic surrounding the area and the fact that it's in the garage it probably wouldn't get too cold. I'm in North Carolina and the tents can get down around maybe 18 to 20°. So the garage has gotta stay a good bit warmer. My worry is if I'm out for the day and the kids accidentally leave the garage open. Then my little makeshift greenhouse/tent would be my last line of defense. I do have the ability to spend a little money for prep, to protect the cacti through the winter Crap, I haven't yet thought about the fact that these different species can tolerate far different winters. Thank you so much! You've helped me feel much more "ready". My wife thinks I'm crazy worrying about the winter this early but it has been on my mind. Thank you!

Hi David! In it's very early stages, the spathe actually closely resembles a new leaf emerging... but after a week or two, it takes on a yellowish-green, bud-like appearance...while a new leaf starts to unroll or uncoil itself, clearly looking like a leaf. Hahaha, they are VERY tall indeed, Etienne! Up to 10m / 30 ft tall, some even taller than that, and apparently the very tallest have been almost double that!!

Congratulations on your new Ariocarpus, and it's great to read that you have put it into a mineral cactus substrate, as they are indeed a bit sensitive to overwatering as you know. Since you are currently in the middle of your winter, but I assume temperatures are over 10-15 C, i would still keep quite dry but out of full sun. Perhaps a few drops of water every week or two? And when your Spring weather with more sun and higher temperatures starts, then i would also start watering as you do your other cacti. Btw, do you know the really cool cactus channel @ModernGrower ? Also from Brazil, and can therfore likely help you much more than I can I'm afraid...I'm sure he would be happy to help you with some useful infos and answers to your excellent question!
