  • Indoor cactus & succulent plant landscaping, anyone? As a visual centerpiece to my collection of cacti and other succulent plants I built myself a cactus and succulent plant rock garde. The mini landscape, a combination of plants, decorative rocks, minerals and fossils was assembled on a display table and as a raised bed. In this video I describe the process of how I built this feature and all the steps and materials required. The video has the following chapters:
    1:26 Choosing & converting standard greenhouse tables/benches
    6:04 Maximising space & the main components
    9:10 Preparing acrylic glass growing troughs and the tables/benches
    12:30 The main layers and filling of the growing troughs/beds
    21:27 Identifying and utilising micro-climate zones
    23:43 Watering of the plants
    26:06 my dream come true: a cactus & succulent rock garden and mini landscape
    Please join me in my greenhouse and watch the step-by-step description of how I went about building my mini landscape cactus & succulent plant rock garden display!
    Enjoy!
    Joe

    Wow! I’ve been waiting for this video. Geez, you put so much thought into that raised bed. Didn’t think it has an acrylic glass and a heating element underneath?!! You did it like a pro. Amazing how you can mix Haworthias with desert cacti. Thanks for doing this video, Joe. It makes me want to try one myself. 😊

      Thanks a lot, Ana, love your wonderful feedback and comments and so happy that you found the video and concept useful and interesting! Yeah indeed, you are spot on, it is perhaps a bit surprising and unconventional in approach, but the Haworthias, Gasterias etc. can be grown quite well alongside the full-sun desert cacti, once the micro climate zones of the set up location have been figured out. Thanks again for watching and commenting, Ana, and drop me a line if any other questions pop up in case you are planning to put something similar together one day - I will most definitely be very happy to assist and support if required! Have a great day and awesome week ahead!

    There's no doubt that your cacti and succulent raised bed is the epitome of desert plant designs Joe😊🤲🌟I could spend a week documenting your plants. That Parodia with the seedlings growing around it is the proof of good cacti culture habits💖

      Thanks a million, Newman, that is very kind of you to say that, truly appreciated! I'm sure there are a lot of other super designs around too, just very happy that you liked this one! haha, I would not mind if you documented the plants, would save me having to do it, lol! Yeah, indeed, I was very pleased to see those seedlings pop up around the mother plant - must be something they like about the whole setup, haha! Wishing you a great weekend and very best cactus greetings going out to you in Japan!

    Hello Joe! You have created a wonderfully beautiful landscape with your cactus and succulent plants among the rocks of various sizes and other items for decorations. You gave great instructions to one who wants to have a similar project. I think the watering of this would be hard to do, but I know you have mastered that with no problem. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and thanks for sharing.

      Hello Cheryl! Really brilliant to read all your wonderful comments and feedback, as always, very much appreciated, thank you! So happy that you found the cactus landscape created, together with all the plants, rocks and other decorations beautiful! And indeed, my intention was to provide detailed and hopefully usable information for anyone else wanting to create something similar in the future! Regarding your question on watering: actually it is a very simple procedure, as I top water almost all my plants - and, coincidentally, I will be uploading a video on how and when I water my cactus and other succulent plants in the near future! All will be revealed, haha! Thanks again for watching and commenting - and wishing you an awesome week ahead! And happy growing of course!

Yes, it was always a dream of mine to try and recreate a litttle bit of a natural growing "habitat" for my succulent plants! And I was so happy and proud to see these tiny little seedlings appear in-between the gravel chips around their mother plant! It felt like something was going allright in this mini ecosystem on a table, haha! Fantastic to read your feedback and I hope that you will be able to create something like this yourself one day too! Hope you are enjoying your weekend, best wishes and happy growing of course!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much, Donna, really appreciated! And brilliant to read that you found the infos in the video useful, and of course that you liked the raised bed mini landscape! The entire project was spread out over a few weeks, which of course included the planning stage and also ordering and preparing the materials. Once I received the pre-cut acrylic glass and had it glued together (2-3 days for full drying), the rest was done in less than a week - i.e. filling in the substrate, planting the cacti and other plants and placing the rocks and other ornamental / landscaping elements. But of course, over time there were also always some new adjustments, so it is a bit of an ongoing project, haha. But the care and maintenance is very low! So in my mind, worth every minute of the efforts! Wishing you too a great week ahead and happy gardening & growing!

    Hi Joe; I am busy planning my Cacti landscape project based on your design; quick question would perlite suffice for the 3cm base layer; rather than pumice that you used; cheers 👋

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Terry! As the sole purpose of that base layer is to serve as a water drainage layer (for surplus water after watering), any gritty or pebbly material will be fine. I used quarz pebbles, all ca. 3-5mm, leaving a fair amount of open pore spaces between the pebbles for drainage. Cheers, Joe👋😊👍😎

    • @terrystokes7047
      @terrystokes7047 7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you Joe; I’m trying to reduce the weight mainly; my frame will be a reinforced wood structure along with the base layer being a drainage layer; that is my thinking around perlite; the main substrate will mirror yours; only 1000mm x 500mm; so a mini version 😁👍

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 месяцев назад +1

      @terrystokes7047 yep, makes sense, Terry! Perlite should indeed do the trick, as very light indeed 👍😉🌵🎄🪴🙌
