Red or White Blooms? Meet Matucana madisoniorum in my cactus greenhouse collection

  • What an amazing coincidence! One of my favourite cactus species, Matucana madisoniorum, originally from Peru - shows it's blooms...and the two plants that I have in my cactus collection show them on the same day, at the same time! A "normal" red-coloured... and a much more rare, white-coloured version of the same species, side by side! Enjoy this awesome experience with me and tell me whether you have a favourite?
    Cheers,
    Joe

    Gorgeous blooms, Joe. Ana from Cactus Caffeine has a pink flowered one of these. I’m guessing that’s the result of crossing these two. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a lovely evening from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

      @cactusjoe  11 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Daz, thanks so much, wow that is really interesting to read about Ana's pink form! I have cross pollinated these two and will be able to test your hypothesis in a few years time, hopefully, haha! Will definitely let you know!! Thanks for watching & commenting my friend and very best cactus greetings and regards to you and Edith in England and Singapore respectively!! And, indeed, happy growing to you both too!

      I was about to say mine is pink. And that Daz thinks crossing these 2 colors will produce the pink. I don’t have the red and white. I will be looking for them to complete the “set”. 😉

    Who doesn't like red? But there are two white flowers and they are bigger with more petals. And they are rare. Hmmm...I'll have to think on this one.

    Very cool looking cacti, with pretty flowers as a bonus. They remind me of Lophophora, except with spines.

    Both beautiful but for me the white flowers look pristine down to the individual petals; I’ve been gardening for some time and never realised Cacti could have such beautiful flowers; thanks for sharing.

    Thank you for sharing these beauties with us! 🤩
    Both the flowers and the plants theirselves are gorgeous 👍🏻
    I can't decide which one is "better", I would say they just compliment each other very well 😉
    I hope that we finally get some sun again in the course of the next week, the last few weeks really felt like autumn here in Kassel (ok, let's mention a positive aspect here: the grass was never so fresh-green during the last summers BUT the days were just so gray here lately and I think that the cacti are waiting for some sunshine too😅)
    I wish you a great week ahead! :) I will definitely have a great day tomorrow because of my Palm Garden Trip 😁

      Hi Jacob! Have been thinking of you today as you visit the Frankfurt Palm Gardens and hope you have an awesome day there! Yep, with all that rain of the past 2-3 weeks my garden is starting to look like a jungle, haha! My cacti are definitely longing for some sun and warmth again, finally! Glad you liked both these two beauties too! Herzliche Kakteengrüße nach Kassel!

      Hello again, I'm currently sitting here in the Palm Garden on the "connection bridge" between the two Tropicarium houses and I must say that the visit is DEFINITELY worth it. I am absolutely flabbergasted by the variety of amazing plants here, such a great collection. I also like they way the put these plants "into scene".
      I'm now going to enjoy a cup of coffee and then look at some of the outdoor beds.
      Begeisterte Pflanzengrüße von Frankfurt nach Bayern! :)

      There was just one thing I missed in the Palm Garden: Astrophytums 😅
      I have only seen very few specimens. Do you have an explanation for that?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Jacob, hmm interesting observation, no idea...but in general they are mainly growing their smaller cacti in the botanical collection not open to the public. Because of the risk of theft and vandalism, unfortunately (...as mentioned in my video). Kakteengrüße nach Kassel!!

    Cross pollinate them, see what colors you get from the offspring!

      Hey Russ, yep that's exactly what I've done and let's see first whether they produce any seeds ti start with, haha!
