I Was An MIT Educated Neurosurgeon Now I'm Unemployed And Alone In The Mountains How Did I Get Here?

- Here, I share my story about how I spent the last two decades of my life as a neurosurgeon who went through a mid-life crisis and got through to the other side.... maybe?
#motivation #inspiration #life #health #goobieanddoobie
In summary, Gooby, a former neurosurgeon with 20 years of training and experience, left his career due to dissatisfaction and ethical concerns about the effectiveness of his work.
He discovered that lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and stress management were more crucial for patients' recovery than surgeries, which often did not address underlying issues.
Gooby struggled with the realization that the medical system was not set up to promote true healing, which led to ethical conflicts and a sense of being stuck in a job he no longer believed in.
With his wife's support, he decided to quit his job, despite having no clear plan for the future, to avoid continuing a life that was making him unhappy.
He started a RUclips channel to document his hikes and time spent with his dog, finding solace in nature and aiming to cherish the moments with his pet while exploring new possibilities for his life.
Thanks

Thanks. Your comment is extremely helpful. You saved me a lot of time.
I was skeptical, because he said he was educated at MIT, which does not have a medical school. 🤔 After reflecting on his story and watching a few more of his vides, I think he is on the up and up, and now am a believer. 🐶
Wait a minute, MIT has a medical school?
At 70 yrs old, I can confidently affirm this is not a midlife crisis. This is your awakening. There is so much more ahead of you. Embrace it.

I agree books help. Doctor Goodie also mentioned mindfulness and mediation, which really help.
I am a Family Medicine doctor that quit my job after taking care of patients for 7 years. Just like Dr. Goobie says, the medical system that we are currently afflicted with DOES NOT look at the root cause. Your doctors, PAs, nurses, pharmacists are not taught to fix the roof. We are taught to follow protocols set up by the pharmaceutical industry, prescribe medications or surgeries because that is how money is made, and tell the patients - good luck. Our medical system, our food system, our economic system - all of them are set up to make us sick and keep us sick, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Fortunately, more and more people are coming awake to these facts and choosing to live in a way that actually nurtures life and support your body to heal itself. Dr. Goobie, God bless you, and I pray that you are able to work through the trauma of being a part of that death system, and find a way to use your experience and history to contribute to life, and not participate with death.
Well said
So Right Family Medicine Doctor!
as a physical therapist working in home health I'm incredibly frustrated working with patients with preventable medical conditions it seems are barely managed, patients i can do nothing to keep out of the hospital, patients who run out of blood pressure meds and their pco tells them to go to the ER to get a refill. i went onto PT because i wanted to help improve people's QOL. it seems all my company amd insurance want me to do is get the visits in and document it well.
i spend most my time talking and educating. i figure if i teach them something, ive at least done SOMETHING. but it feels more and more like we live in a broke system where everyone is over specialized and unable to effectively treat anything. too many patients being told the doctors dont really know what's going on, so the slap on a CHF diagnosis and call it a day.
Private insurance companies are the Issue. They intend only to make a profit. It's up to the General Public to say something. That's how democracy works . Waiting around for the politicians they will do what gets them reelected. So if the majority of the General Public days fix the medical system or we won't vote for you. That's the only time they will get off their asses and do anything.
Here in Italy we have a complete different medical system and things like this happens rarely. Hope we don't copy the American private system.

He had the chance to replace my entire front breaks and charge me $2000. The mechanic's business is flourishing. He can't keep customers away. You sound like my mechanic. He just helped 10,000,000 viewers in 3 weeks!! He doesn’t need to get back on his horse. He’s freely given us the secrets of how to be healed! You can’t ask for more then that!
Was searching for this comment. Agreed.
Ppl do need a mechanic like him. Unfortunately, he sounds burnt out. In order to change a system like that, you need energy. He is tapped out. I held hope that he could revisit helping ppl with his skills and intelligence. What I see is a personal journey, not a drive to incite change in a system. Those are a rare few. He is advocating for himself.
The pharma system needs to rethink their protocols for health, or we won't be able to excel as a civilization. More healthy, happy, intelligent ppl exist, the better we become as individually and as a whole.
sadly big companies want him to disappear.
@@luabella_ "In order to change a system like that, you need energy."
Nope, that's the wrong approach to begin with.
System is too big and corrupted to change it. Solution is much simpler.
People like this doctor here, and there are many others like him, just have to go away from that corrupt system and offer people another alternative approach.
Once people were offered that kind of choice, I believe think would rapidly change.
Also, we don't need another "system" because all systems are prone to corruption.

@@KeillaSellay idk faith in god has been manipulated all throughout history by the rich and powerful. i think what we need is people who think for themselves. faith in a higher power or not should be irrelevant and personal when it comes to social discourse. whether or not you believe in god clearly has no correlation to your ability to be rational as there are irrational atheists who make bizarre claims about all religion and rational theists, who acknowledge the harm religion has done on a mass-scale throughout history, but still see the value in the religion itself, perhaps from the perspective of how religion has played a necessary role in educating people in times before public education even existed. rather than the system or empire of religion responsible throughout history for causing harm in the name of God.

Dr. Goobie, as a mental health professional, I resonate deeply with your observations. So many people are suffering as part and parcel of their ecology, not solely due to their neuroanatomy, chemistry, or hormones. I provide short term support, a space for processing traumas and loneliness, and offer strategies for wellness, but so many people are facing cultural, social, and economic situations that thwart their wellness, and that fact affects me deeply. Moreover, my profession does not adequately acknowledge all of the ways it upholds the status quo, and that really hurts. As you said, it’s a moral injury. Why Do You Type Like This
This was amazing! Went to 7 different doctors, found one; did not like taking a pill. As I fixed his home networking, he fixed my stomach problems by making an appointment to see him, he sat and listened for an hour and told me.
It’s what you fill the tank, and how you live your life, he had me change my diet; I stuck to it, took blood work and sent me to a nutrition store to buy all plant enzymes to take one before every meal. It was a strict meal I had to follow and if I didn’t follow, doc threatened me that if this didn’t work, he would have to send a scope down my esophagus down to my stomach; so I kept to the regiment! 😂
1 month later, felt like a teenager and no more gastrointestinal issues. This was 15 years ago.
I encourage you to pivot Doc! We need more docs like you.

Wow!! It hit home for me. I spent 30 years as a fire medic. Saw a lot of human misery. Saw and treated every kind of trauma, suicide, cardiac issues, strokes and many things you can't think of. The new kids hiring on had no work ethic, no brotherhood, entitlement. The hospital ER staff was becoming more angry and arrogant. I was very unhappy. Gain weight. Acquired 3 herniated discs. Saw a spine surgeon regularly. Had 2 knee surgeries.
I walked away from the career. Lost 30 lbs. Sleep all night, every night. Changed my diet. No stress. Do what I want, when I want with no set schedule. After 2 years. No more back issues. No more knee issues. No need for knee replacement now.
Yes! It seemed like we went from being the patient’s advocate, to an environment of the patient being the enemy, and it seemed like it happened overnight! New nurses thought they were too important to handle anything but “trauma”, and everything else “should have gone to the primary doctor’s office”. Oh, and everyone in pain was “faking it”.
So good to hear! Stay on that path.

It brings me so much joy and something else... connectedness I think; to realize that so many others are enjoying this video and that its spreading so virally. It makes me feel like everyone else is much more like me and seeing things for what they are, albeit with hope and not so much doom and gloom. We can do this ALL of us together and reject the division rhetoric & the programming---and instead usher in a new renaissance for humankind much closer to serving the people and not greed based... Healing not Treating. Flourishing not surviving. Love & LIght!
@@Freakazoid12345 if thats your take away then you missed the entire point of the video. Ask yourself why hustle culture exists? It never existed in the past. In the very beginning man lived in tribes where each member had a job and the tribe would thrive. Then during the height of the egyption empire agriculture was created. It allowed people to harvest large amounts of food so that they could spend more time developing society and technology. Then look at the industrialization era in western history. We were able to use oil and other fuel to power large factories to create mass produced goods/food/resources. What happened during these times? Civilization thrived and grew and people were able to work one job for the most part. We even had something called pensions where a person could work 20+ years and get paid a retirement salary. Fast forward to today... you have to work 2 jobs in many cases to just afford rent and a car payment. Why? We are more productive then ever arent we? Why should we have to work MORE? It is because you have been lied to. There is more then enough money to go around. However, executives have become so greedy they are stealing money from the workers through the pracitce of wage theft. Yes... you can look it up. The working class has lost over 1 trillion in salary due to stock options for executives over the past 50 years. You are being told your lazy and you have to have to "hustle" to survive. This is in fact a lie designed to get you to produce "content" for these big companies. Not to mention provide cheap services for people with money. Why not just go drive them around and buy their groceries. Anyways you will relaize it some day. I wish you the best.
Lol you totally missed the point
