  • Hi everyone! Want to know what I do to BEAT THE WINTERTIME BLUES on those dark, cold and gloomy days? Well, if (like me) you just CANNOT wait for the Spring and for some sunshine and warmer temperatures to finally come back - and for our collections of cacti & other succulent plants with their amazing blooms to finally come back to life again ...well then this is definitely the video for YOU! I promise a LOT of COLORS, a lot of blooms and a lot of awesome cacti... to brighten up any dark and gloomy day - enjoy!
    You will see and experience a bright firework of flowering cacti from last summer's growing season, including Parodia (formerly also Notocactus), Mammillaria, Coryphantha, Thelocactus, Pelecyphora, Lophophora, Copiapoa, Echinocereus, Cleistocactus, Echinopsis, and many more!
    Btw, only 1 more week (next Friday, Dec 22nd, winter solstice 2023), and then our days here on the northern hemisphere will be getting longer again, whoop whoop!
    Season's Greetings,
    Joe

    This is a blooming AWESOME video Joe haha, and so wonderful to see all of these stunning flowers and all their gorgeous colours, and the names of each one is brilliant to help many growers to ID their cacti too, the weather has been dark and gloomy here in Ireland and looking at your awesome blooms and getting excited for the upcoming growing season and seeing all the blooms again really gifts me a happy lift, I am really counting the days till spring again and in just under a week its the shortest day and then the days start to get longer again YAY, thanks so much for sharing this beautiful video of all your stunning blooms with us Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a blooming wonderful weekend XXXX

      Hahaha, thanks so much Lyn, for all your awesome blooming feedback and comments, as always LOVE them all!! Yes, I agree 100%, I too simply just cannot wait for spring to finally be back again! We have had only a few hours of sunshine here in the past two months, the weather has just been so awfull, dark, rainy, gloomy, day for day...and everyone is hoping for a bit more of the sun in January, February, but usually it then also comes with pretty frosty, very cold weather here, we will see... I'm really happy that you enjoyed the video and blooms and am sending you and Hans all the very best, blooming cactus greetings over to you both on the beautiful Emerald Isle! Enjoy your Saturday evening and rest of your weekend too of course!

    Fabulous compilation of amazing flowers, great Lichtblick in this dark season! 👍🏻🌼🌸 It's always astonishing to see how many variations of blooms there are, regarding shape, size, colour etc. 😄
    And if we further this thought: Of course not only the flowers but also the plants theirselves occur in so many different appearings. AND cacti are just one plant family out of thousands on our tiny planet. The uniqueness of nature just doesn't fail to amaze me!
    Besides that I'm by the way also interested in astronomy. So, not only the flora and fauna of our planet is fascinating but also the depths of space bear so many beautiful things 🤩
    Enjoy your weekend! :)

      @cactusjoe  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much, Jacob, that is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed this compilation of flowering cacti - and also about your special interests in the flora and fauna of our planet as well as astronomy, wow! Yep, indeed, I have a LOT of sympathies for your interests, as I too (as a geologist by profession) love the natural world around us and the many interactions between living beings and the environments and ecosystems of our planet! Cacti and other succulent plants are of course just a tiny part of this all, but they have always fascinated me for exactly that close interaction and the crazy, mind-boggling adaptations of these plants to their extreme living environments and habitats!! Thanks as always, Jacob, for your interest and support, for exchanging ideas and thoughts, I always really appreciate that, and wishing you a wonderful Saturday evening and rest of your weekend too!

    🙏🏼🎍 hey Joe, wanna wish you a merry Christmas and I do have a question how can I identify my cactus and my other plants even though they may be hybrid I’m not sure I get confused I see someone on TV that look like mine but then I’m not sure. Have a happy new year Joe I enjoy your show tremendously. Thank you.

      Yeah, I know what you mean, getting the ID of the various cacti ...especially of hybrids!!...right, is absolutely not always essy at all! I often find that not so easy too! A lot of it just comes with time and experience. The more pictures and videos of cacti ( with their names added) one sees, the more it becomes possible to identify them. I always like to add the names of plants I am showing, for exactly that reason, hoping it helps others with ID of their own plants! Happy Holidays!!🙏🙏🙌👍😊🎄🎄🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️

    Thanks Joe; lovely video and really enjoyable; I have a tropical back garden and a 4mx5m Mediterranean front garden that’s my passion; but you have got me really interested in cacti; just purchased some hardy cacti for the front garden and just started to design a (much much smaller) cacti landscape for my new potting shed on the same lines as yours; what would be good starter cacti for my landscape; only 1mx0.5m (for now) I’m in the North West of England so looking to keep the potting shed above 0 centigrade; aiming for 5 centigrade in winter; thanks again and keep the videos coming please cheers 😊

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Terry! Thanks so much and really happy to read that you enjoyed the video, AND also terrific to read about your passion for your tropical as well as Mediterranean gardens, both sound so cool! And adding a few hardy cacti to the Mediterranean garden also should work well!
      And haha, brilliant that you are also expanding your interest in cacti...AND thinking of putting a cactus landscape garden together, fantastic!!!
      From your description of the temperatures (...and I am assuming it is also a suitably bright location with at least a little bit of sun?), I would focus perhaps on some cacti from the genera Echinocereus (many are quite happy with very cool temps, quite some are even frost hardy, plus they have beautiful flowers and there is a huge variety of forms). Also, Echinopsis cacti are always a winner, quite good for these type of purposes and also with fantastic flowers! If you also want to try one or two Thelocactus (e.g. rinconensis or hexaedrophorus), they are very beautiful cacti and ok with low winter temperatures. Also, to add some variation, the columnar cacti from the genus Oreocereus are very suitable (e.g. O. trollii = 'Old Man of the Andes' cactus) for cool temps and very beautiful to look at. Hope this gives you a bit of inspiration and input to your planning! Good luck and success with the cactus landscaping! Have a great day and happy growing of course!!

    Hey Joe, my name is Pauline I have another question I have a living stone that had flowers. The flowered had died but nothing else is happening. I don’t know if I should water it or just leave it alone. I watered it a few weeks ago a little bit I’m not sure what to do. If you can help me I will be forever grateful thank you.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Pauline! Now that your Living Sone, or Lithops, has flowered, just keep it dry and relatively cool and in a bright spot. Wait for the current fleshy leaves to slowly shrivel and dry up, and watch the new pair of leaves appear from the crack in between the old leaves. Only when the old leaves have shrivelled away, give a little bit of water to your plant. Allow the soil to dry before watering again. Have you had a chance to see my dedicated video on Growing Lithops on my channel yet? Might be of interest 👍😊

    Ok what's the trick i had no blooms

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  3 месяца назад

      Oh, sorry to hear that! Often cacti require a cooler location and virtually no watering during the winter months (dormancy phase for cacti), if they have trouble flowering in the spring. If you would like to hear more about this I have a video on my channel (cultivation 101 playlist) about how to best keep cacti duting the winter months. 🙏🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌸🌺💚😎☀️
