Absolutely awesome video Joe! I really enjoyed learning about what I'm putting and not putting into my cacti when I feed them. And I do now find I'm erring on underfeeding my cacti. I do appreciate you explaining cacti needs and why. There is so much I never even thought of. Thanks to this video I feel I'm in a better position for my cacti to thrive. Thank you so much for sharing and have a great evening and a wonderful upcoming week my friend!
Fantastic feedback, Jeff, thanks so much, really uplifting and motivating to read that the vids are informative and making a little bit of a difference! Yeah, this whole topic around nutrients for cacti is often overlooked, although it is really quite important for the health of our plants and also to get the most out of our hobby! Wishing you an awesome rest of the week, my friend, and sending you lot's of cactus greetings over to Georgia, USA!!🙌👍😊🌵🌵🌼🌺💚😎🌞

WOW Joe AWESOME video and amazing information you have shared all about fertilising and the individual nutrients, and you really are so AMAZING how you explain everything, you are like a Human Encyclopedia for cacti and succulent information and you are a wealth of information, Hans and I always learn so much from you from your awesome info and vids, WOWSERS Joe, your video is the absolute BEST video we have ever seen about fertilizing C & S, thanks so much for sharing this incredible and very educational video on Fertilising cacti and succulents Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a fantastic evening and rest of the weekend XXXX
Aww, thank you so much, Lyn and Hans, for watching and for your AWESOME feedback and comments, deeply appreciated! Well, i thought i would just share this, giving my perspective on the topic ...and of course it is a topic where there are few 'rights' or 'wrongs' and folks have quite different ways of going about things! Ask 10 different cactus growers and you will get 15 versions of the "truth", hahaha! Sending you both very best cactus greetings across to the beautiful Emerald Isle, lot's of Plant Power and Happy Growing of course!👍🙌🙏🙏😊🌵🌵🌺🌸🌼💚😎☀️😉
What a beautiful sunny day in Germany! There is a lot of useful and helpful information in this video! No wonder why all of your cactus and succulents look so healthy. In addition to regular cactus fertilizer, I also give mine SUPERthrive which is labeled as an organic vitamin solution containing kelp. I don't know if it is distributed worldwide. Happy growing!
Many thanks Terry, really appreciated and very happy you found the video informative! I have not seen precisely that brand here but indeed there are similar supplemental fertilizers available here too. Occasionally i have served it as a first "welcome back" treat, especially to my epiphytic and columnar cacti in the Spring, haha! Hope you are having a great weekend!! 👍🙏🙏😊🌵🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️
Thank you for this amazing informative video Joe! Your Cactus collection is amazing! I don't bay never fertilizer, but I use aloe vera for my small cactus. Have a beautiful weekend! 🌹🏜🌞👏🌺
Thanks Elda, glad you liked the video, thanks for watching and commenting! Wishing you a wonderful weekend too, in your fantastic flower garden! 👍🙏🙏😉🌺🌸🌼☀️🌵🌵💚😎
This was a VERY useful video for me. Learned a lot and realised I need to maybe find a more appropriate fertiliser. Halfway through I paused and checked the fertilisers I have been using. Because a few cacti channels are using a liquid tomato fertiliser I have done the same. Mine has a NPK of 14.0 : 1.4 : 8.0. and has no trace elements. This seems to high in N and too low in P maybe. The only cacti specific fertiliser I have found so far is a pelletised one and has NPK of 11.9 : 1.8 : 8.0 and has trace elements. Impressed by your watering set from your previous video. The watering and fertiliser frequencies you mentioned was very useful. I suspect that I will need to adapt to my climatic conditions with our very hot summers and cool frosty winters. Joe, thank you so much for sharing. Much appreciated.
Hey Ted, really good and motivating to read that you found the video and infos useful and hopefully helpfull! I totally agree with your comment about having to adjust and 'custom tailor' to your own local climate and growing circumstances - there is no silver bullet solution for watering, fertilizing, etc. Just too many variables! But of course knowing the main parameters that are worth keeping in mind is what I hope to make folks aware of with my video, haha! Yeah, I also agree with you on the tomato fertilizer, would not be my favourite choice for most cacti either, at least in my climate and my mineral substrate. Sending you lot's of cactus greetings for a wonderful rest of the week ahead! Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated! Happy growing!!
I'm glad you covered the nitrogen that comes from thunderstorms Joe, where I used to live in Dorset that was actually still classed as Witchcraft 😮😁Well put together my friend 😊😊🌵🌵
Thanks so much, Ziggy, wonderful to read your feedback, much appreciated as always, my friend! Haha, yes indeed unfortunately way too many things based on science still considered "witchcraft" in far too many places, haha! Enjoy your Monday and rest of the week ahead! I need to catch up on all the cool vids you have recently posted on your channel! Cheers, Joe 🙌🙏🙏👍😉🌵🌵🌼🌸🌺💚😎☀️
Hi Zemaida, thanks so much for watching and super that you found the video informative and useful! Thanks for your wonderful feedback, appreciated! Wishing you lot's of fun and success growing your new cacti and other succulents! 🙏🙌👍😊🪴🌵🪴🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️
Great information. I have an echinopsis type thats 3yrs old. I give it a small dose of miracle gro andbits producing pups like crazy. Now its fall season and im not watering any more. Im trying to let it go dormant for winter so i can get blooms next summer...thanks for the information❤❤
Thanks Michelle, great to read that the infos were useful to you! Thanks for watching and commenting and wishing you lot's of success with your Echinopsis blooms, hopefully you will get lot's of them in the coming flowering season! Have a wonderful day and happy growing of course! 👍🙌🙏🙏😊🌵🌵🌼🌸🌺💚😎☀️
What an incredibly informative video! I had to take notes. There was a lot of great stuff learn. I think I've been fairly heavy-handed with fertilizing my cacti. I will ease off on it! Thanks again, Joe.
Many thanks Justin, for watching and for your fantastic comments and feedback! Really great to read that you found the information useful! Hope all the infos are useful and help you with further growing your cactus & succulent collection succesfully - best wishes, and happy growing of course! 👍🙏🙌😊🌵🪴🌵🌺🌸🌼💚😎☀️
Thank you very much, Saya, I'm really happy that you liked the video and found it informative! Thanks for watching and for your brilliant feedback, much appreciated! 🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌵😉💚🙌
I enjoyed and learned from this video, Joe. It is very detailed. I only fertilize in spring and sometimes during fall. My cacti goes to summer dormancy so I stop feeding when summer temperatures get too high.
Thanks so much Ana, for watching and commenting, very much appreciated as always! Glad you found the video informative and indeed it is a bit detailed - but hopefully useful NPK infos, haha! Yeah, in the very hot summers here, like last year, i skip the summer fertilizing too. My plants will also go into a short summer dormancy then, but not as long as yours probably. Thanks for sharing your infos, very interesting for me to read. Thanks again and have an awesome weekend ahead Ana!!👍🙏🙏🙌😊🌵🌵🪴🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️
Thank you so much for the great content ! Very good, reasonable explanation. And kudos to you for maintaining such a wonderful collection in a less-than-ideal climate :)
Haha, thanks a million, José, for your awesome comments and feedback! Really happy that you found the video useful and thanks so much also for your kind words about my collection here, much appreciated! I try my best to grow them in the climate here, Summers not so bad, but Winters more challenging...and having them in a greenhouse of course really helps! Have a wonderful day!!🙌🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌺💚😎☀️
@@cactusjoe extra points for using the accent over my name 😀 I'm growing mine in subtropical climate so it is also a challenge to combat humidity and rain! Look forward to more videos
@@JoseGarcia-oc7dj haha, i always find that fantastic, to hear in which different climates us cactus enthusiasts are all growing these wonderful plants! And they are so incredibly adaptable! May I ask, where are you and your collection based?
Hi Joe. I am a little late seeing your current video. I water every 2 weeks, and I add a fertilizer called Cactus Juice. The manufacturer request a dosage of 5 ml per gallon at every watering. It is 1-7-6 and has a light additive of Calcium. I do not use any water additive for the first and last watering of the season. On the second watering in the spring and next to last in the fall, I also add insecticidal concentrate of Azadirachtin/Pyrethrin at 4 ml per gallon. Why do you not use pH control for your watering. All you would need to do is take a meter reading in the tank that has your water stored in it, add pH down as required and water. After a little practice, I am able to make every gallon be at 5.8 or 5.9 pH. You can pick any range that you want to allow. Send me a note if you need help. This is another very informative video. Thank you again for all your help with understanding this wonderful hobby. By the way, your wife should be proud of her wonderful art work she is letting you use as a backdrop in the video!
Hi Bill, as always, billiant to read your comments with lot's of interesting and useful infos! Sounds like you have a very good watering routine worked out for your wonderful collection, also when to add what, perfect! Yeah, actually i regularly check and adjust the pH of my water too, but it is relatively constant and most of the times fine as i use rain water. Nevertheless, i would indeed also be interested to learn from you how you go about your checks! My wife, Monika, says Hello, she was very happy about your wonderful comments on her artwork, thank you once again, my friend! Also, very happy that you found the video and topic interesting, thanks! Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week! Cheers, Joe 🙌🙏👍🌵🌺🌼🌵💚😎☀️
Thank you for another great and informative video! 👍🏻 I personally use a fertilizer from Seramis at the moment - it's in liquid form - which I hope is quite fitting. It has a 3-4-5 NPK ratio which I hope is ok, because Nitrogen has at least the lowest portion. I fertilize round about every six weeks (so approximately with every 3rd or 4th watering) which I think works quite well. It was very interesting to get to know that the soil in arid areas mainly gets its nitrogen from lightning strikes, thank you for this 'fun fact' 😄 Have a great remainder of the weekend and until next time! :)
Hallo Jacob! Thanks for watching and for your very informative feedback and comments, which i always love reading! Yep, indeed, your fertilizer - and also your frequency - sound perfect! I have not tried the one from Seramis yet, does it have trace elements added too? Will give it a go one day too, as I like changing around my brands every now and then - as i don't think that any single one is "perfect" for all my plants! Hope you have a wonderful Monday afternoon and also rest of the week ahead! Kakteengrüße nach Kassel! 🙏🙏🙌👍🌵🌺🌵🌼💚😎☀️😊
Yes, it indeed has trace elements in it, to be precise B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn. Additionally, it also contains Ethylendiamintetraacetat (EDTA) as a complexing agent. By the way, regarding future videos: As you now already covered very many topics of plant care and also your own greenhouse composition, it may be a great idea to do a kind of video series on the most "prominent" cactus species, I would definitely love to watch videos of that kind. Wishing you a great Monday too! :)
Many thanks, Anna, makes me happy to read that you found the video useful and informative! As always, many thanks for watching and commenting, have a great week ahead!🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌵💚😎☀️

Good morning, mister Cactus Joe.Thanks for your insightful video.I have my cacti all outside under the sun.Since the weather is not that hot here in the north, I wait for the rain and if necessary I water the cacti with rainwater from the germination container.Best regards
Hello Holger, thanks for your message and very happy that you found the video informative and insightful. Excellent to read that you are growing all your cacti outside, under the sun! From my own experiences over the years, I can say that quite a lot of cacti will develop even more beautiful spines and growth when grown 'hard' outside in our climate. And I guess you have some sort of cover for very wet, cool periods? Thanks for sharing, and best cactus greetings to you up North! 🙌👍😉🙏🌵🌵🌵🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️🙋♂️
Great information Joe. Correct me if I'm wrong. Another danger from fertilizing too much is etiolation (stretching). Lack of sunlight is not the only thing that causes etiolation. It can be caused by fertilizing too much or fertilizing in the wrong part of the season. If it is too hot, the fertilizer will cause an explosion of growth but it will be long, stretched out, unhealthy growth. Feed your cacti in early to mid-spring for happy prickles.
Yes indeed, that is very true! All the points you are making are excellent ones and spot on! Also, fertilizing in too high concentrations, especially during warm weather can lead to cacti suddenly splitting open...and these open wounds can then easily be infected by fungi, bacteria and viruses. Thanks for watching & commenting and for sharing your experiences! Have a great day and happy growing of course! 🙌👍🙏😊🌵🪴🌵🌿🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️
Excellent and informative video once again, Joe. I’ll be changing what fertiliser I use next year, the Chempak I’ve been using has been okay, but there’s better ones out there. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜
Thanks very much, Daz, glad you enjoyed watching it! And thanks also for your support and feedback! Yeah, i like changing my fertilizer brands every now and then too, which i think is also quite important as i don't think there is that one, single, "perfect" product around! Sending you and Edith very best regards and cactus greetings for an excellent Monday and rest of the week ahead, my friends!! Take care and happy growing of course!!🙏🙏👍🙌😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️
Hello Joe! This is a very helpful and informative video. I always learn from you and value your advice on growing cacti and succulents. I checked my fertilizer after watching this and am glad to know I have the proper ratios. I think a hoya is a succulent...correct me if I am wrong. It has a beautiful bloom on it right now. I've owned it for about 4 years and this is the first bloom. Have a wonderful weekend!
Hello Cheryl! Thank you for your wonderful feedback, really appreciated! Super to read that the fertilizer you are using for your plants is very suitable, that is really important to know, that one is feeding them the right nutrients! And indeed your Hoya is obviously rewarding you for the good treatment and care! They are indeed beautiful plants! Thanks again and enjoy your upcoming weekend!😊👍🙏🙏🙌🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎🌞

A big source of fertilizer in deserts are bats, birds, mice and spiders. Spiders on smaller plants are a big help, because the carcass of insects is a big source of nutrients. When you have night blooming plants, bats and moths are big pollinators.
Thank you Joe, for the very informative video for new collectors, I live in similar climate as yours, I’m following your recommendations and experience. I have one question and that is how do you control your humidity in your greenhouse? Thank you very much!
Hi Slava, thank you very much, super that you liked the video and found it informative! Thanks for watching!! Yes indeed, the relatively high humidity in our climate can be a real problem, especially during the winter months in the greenhouse. I try and keep it rel. low (below 70%) by having an electtric dehumidifier running, but also by keeping my plants and their substrate completely dry during this dormancy period. Another thing that helps is to have at least 1-2 electric fans running, to ensure air movement, circulation and drying. Hope this helps? Kind regards and thank you once again!🙏🙏👍🙌😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎
@@cactusjoe thank you Joe for the answer! I also bought a dehumidifier and my humidity is around 50%. Yes my soil is dry, I hope my first winter will be successful, I’m waiting for your next video! I also have bought the small electric fan running.🌵🌵🌵

You're plants looks so damn healthy! I'm very interested in what Fertilizers you use. Could you send me a link of a product or something that would be ideal to start with please? Thank you so much for all the great videos. Your channel is one of the best I've found on here for cacti lovers. Much love bro :D
Thanks so much cactus bro, truly appreciate your awesome feedback and really very happy that you like the channel and videos!! I use a few different brands of cactus fertilizers, but always along the lines (wrt composition) of what I am discussing in the video. I get my main fertilizer from the cactus nursery Uhlig Kakteen, check out this link www.uhlig-kakteen.de/en/kakteen-naehrsalz-flory-4-8-n-16-p205-24-k20-4-mg.html?id=84400814 Thanks again and best wishes, take care and happy growing!
Awww, thanks so much, truly appreciated! Only some, like Ariocarpus, Thelocactus, Turbinicarpus, etc. are happy with some calcareous chips added to their substrate, for Calcium. Magnesium is more of a secondary trace mineral. 🙌☺️👍🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚☀️😎🙋♂️

Do you by chance have any videos about how to make a good cactus soil mix? If so could you please give me the link? It would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for all of your other wonderful content, it has helped me tremendously. 😊
Hi there! I have a few videos on my channel that feauture my own "standard" cactus and succulent soil mix, which works very well for me. In the playlist on Cactus Care 101 you will find a few videos on staging and potting/repotting of cacti, with references to and recipe of my substrate. Try this link e.g.: ruclips.net/video/AgX4Ol2XY6U/видео.html At approx16 :20 in that video I have some details listed for you, regarding ingredients. Hope this helps, best wishes and have a great day, happy growing!!
Hey Joe, what causes a Trichocereus to drop her buds. Are they difficult bloomers? Are they fussy to any changes? Seems like that would be a problem for recruitment of the species - predisposed to extinction. May be a good idea for a video!
Hey @solarwinds thanks for watching and for your good questions. Sorry to read about your Trichocereus dropping it's buds. Unfortunately that can actually happen with quite a lot of cacti in cultivation, often linked to sudden changes in their immediate environment (temperature, substrate wetness or dryness, etc.) or growing location (brightness, direction towards sunlight, etc.). So this is a phenomenon not just linked to Trichocereus specifically. Wishing you a relaxing Sunday and hope you get plenty of other blooms from your cacti! Kind regards and happy growing!!🙏👍😉🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️
Thank you Joe, very interesting video! And great t-shirt! I usually buy always the same succulent fertilizer at the supermarket, I checked the ratio after watching you video and it's strange: 4-6-8. I usually fertilize my cacti only once a year because I am afraid they get bloated, as you say in the video. Have a great weekend!
@Vera Vera thank you so much, super that you found the video interesting and also liked the cactus t-shirt, haha! The ratio of your fertilizer is fine! As long as the N is lower than P and K, that's great! And if once a year works for you then that's great! I have an almost 100% mineral substrate, so I need a bit more fertilizer for mine! Thanks so much for watching and you have a wonderful weekend too!! 🙏🙏👍😉🌵🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️
Hi joe this is a lot of information to process. Your collection looks soooo healthy I can see they are enjoying the care you're giving them. I have seen some people talk about amonia sulphate and it helps the cacti to grow as well as lower the PH of the water.
Aww, thanks so much Marlene, that's very kind of you to say! Glad you like the plants shown! Ammoniasulphate does indeed lower the pH of soil a little, but it is quite rich in Nitrogen (has a NPK of 21:0:0) and in my view not too suitable on it's own for most cacti, for the reasons explained in the video (they will tend to flower less and also start to bloat and become less healthy over time). Hope this info helps. Best wishes and have a wonderful weekend ahead!! 🙏🙌👍😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎🌞
Thank you so much, Angela, for watching and for your awesome feedback, much appreciated!! Really happy that you found the video informative! Have a great day, happy growing!! 🙏🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌿🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️
Graet video! Thank you so much for your videos. You are very didactic. Sorry to bother you. Do yo feed your suculent plants in winter? Do you feed your cactus in winter? Thank you so much for youe help. Greetings from Galicia (Spain).
Thanks so much, fantastic to read that you enjoyed the video and find my videos informative, that is wonderful to hear, thank you! No problem at all about asking these very good and important questions! I never water or fertilize the majority of my cacti and succulents during the winter period. I keep them cool and dry for this important dormancy period. Thanks for a very informative video. I've been feeding my young Trichocereus plants maybe every 2-3 weeks over the growing season and they don't seem to have come to any harm. However most of my desert cacti have received far less, and in a couple of cases don't seem to have grown at all. I've only really had one adult cactus loss, which I now put down to the wrong growth medium. I'm now trying to figure out which ones can stay outside over winter, which ones will come indoors and which ones will go into the basement which is cool and dark.
Thanks, brilliant that you found the video informative, thanks for watching and for your feedback, also with lot's of interesting infos! Yeah, Trichos typically do need and can manage a few "meals" more than many other desert cacti! They can be real fertilizer guzzlers, haha! I actually give a few of my columnar cacti an extra fertilizer dose too, bit only weather permitting. This year the summer here had quite a lot of rain, so I got in less watering opportunities than "normal". Good luck with all your pre-dormancy period activities, always a really busy time of the cactus year!! Best wishes and happy growing!🙌🙏🙏👍🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️😊
Very informative video Joe, thanks for sharing. Personally I use tomato fertilizer for my cacti and results are great. Blooming without fail, ofcourse I come from a sunny area so that helps too. Greetings from Malta 🇲🇹
Thanks for sharing, Anders! If that fertilizer works for you then that's great.👍😊🌵 Just in case your cacti are a bit reluctant to flower in the future, then you could always tweak that with the occasional dose of a fertilizer that is a bit higher in Phosphorous. Have a wonderful Saturday afternoon and evening! 🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️
Informative video! I'm wondering if you water your cacti at all from November to March. I live in Canada and afraid to not giving abit of water may shrivel them in size. I've already noticed this in one of my barrel cactus. Your thoughts please. Thanks!
Hi Annette, first of all thank you so much for watching and very happy that you found the video informative! Regarding your question, yes indeed I keep my cacti completely dry from November to March, and also at temperatures around 6 to 10C. And indeed, they will almost all show shrivelling and shrinking, but they do that in nature too where they will be able to go without water for very lengthy periods too. As long as they are standing cool, they will be fine! They are "designed" to fill themselves with water and "de-shrivel" again during Spring. Only if you are keeping your cacti in heated rooms during winter, above 15C, will you need to give them a little drink, very occasionally. But that will usually not be a dormancy and so blooms will unlikely develop in the following year. Hope this answers your question! Happy growing!👍🙏🙌😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️
@@cactusjoe Thanks for your response. I keep my cactus indoors, so the temps would be over 15 degrees and have grow lights...so are you saying water very infrequently during the fall and winter, or still no water at all? Thx for your invaluable information.
@@annettenoga6182 no problem, Annette, happy to help if I can. Yeah, given your cacti are standing warmer than 15C I would say just a very small amount of water every few weeks - hard to say without knowing the exact setup your end, but generally in winter: the cooler and drier the better. If that is not possible then just a small amount of water, very infrequently - and just monitor how the plants are responding. You don't want them to develop root rot, so avoid water logged substrate in the pots. And you also don't want them to continue growing through the winter - perhaps your lights are sufficient, but if not, then the plants run the risk of growing in the insufficent, weak winter lighting, which results in so-called etiolated shapes, i.e. much thinner and light-green-colored towards the top of the plants than at their base. Hope this helps, best wishes!
@@annettenoga6182 btw, Annette, have you seen the video on my channel about how to grow/keep cacti during the Winter dormancy period? It is in the "Cactus 101" playlist. Perhaps some additional useful info for you there too. ruclips.net/video/pI0ZHD5hMqk/видео.html&lc=UgzFENxUIIglGKAjlIR4AaABAg
@@cactusjoe just viewed video on cacti winter dormancy...lots of great information. I will try to restraint myself to not water cacti at all. I found it very helpful to repot in Feb and the logic behind it.....awesome!

❤ hey Joe, this is Pauline I buy plants at Home Depot. I don’t have the luxury of getting plants from big places on Internet but when I get the plants they are so dried out I tried to soak them first and then let them dry and then plant them and I want to do this how should I handle it?
Hey Pauline! Thanks for watching and for your comments and great question! By the way, for a very long time I got most of my cacti and other succulent plants from places like Home Depot and similar places too! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! What counts is that people enjoy their plants and treat them well, get them to grow and flower if possible, not where they get them from (as long as they are not taken and poached from their natural habitats of course!!) - I am a firm believer in that. If you get new plants from a shop or supermarket then they will often not be in very suitable soil or substrate, as these are often not well draining and tend to be soggy and wet far too long. Not something that most cacti & succulents like. So before soaking them in their old pot and substrate, you might want to take them out of the original pot, carefully remove the old soil from their roots, then repot them into a well-draining, gritty cactus soil and keep for about a week in the shade, without watering. This allows any injuries on the roots to heal and callus over. Only then start watering a little bit, allow to dry again before repeating and gradually get the plant re-rooted and growing in it's new substrate and pot perhaps. Best to do this in spring or summer, not the winter months. Hope this helps answer your question. Take care and happy growing!
Hi there, thanks for watching and for your question. More typically a NPK 12-12-12 fertilizer is used as a balanced "all purpose" one for lawns and vegetable plots in Spring. Personally, I would not use it on my cacti as it does have a relatively (too) high proportion of Nitrogen. As a result, over time, your cacti might look relatively "nice and green" and plump, but may not flower as easily. Also, they may become a bit more prone to diseases and rot. The NPK ratio for cacti would be better around e.g. 2-4-4 or 5-8-8 ...i.e. overall less Nitrogen-rich and less than P, K. Hope this helps? What is your experience so far with using 12-12-12? Best wishes and happy growing! 👍🙌😉🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Hello mate :) I got one question, i bought these salt "flory" nutrient salts from Uhlig one for cacti and one for succulents, but i am a bit afraid of using it, it is 8% N, 16% P205, 24% K20 it say 1 gr pr ltr of water, but i am not sure if this is a bit strong fertilizer? What do you think? Also for seedlings they recomend half dose of 15% N, 10% P205, 15% K20. I usualy use much lower values but maybe it is dozed so small it is still safe? These salts just last a lot longer than the fluid stuff, so wanted to try it ^^ Best regards 💚💚🌵🌵
Hi there! Yep, the salts are definitely the more economical option. I use exactly the same one, flory 4, and I use it at half the prescribed dose for all my plants, 3x per growing season as described in the video. Hope this helps a bit, let me know if you have more questions on the topic. Have a great day! 🙌👍😉🌵🪴🌵🌿🌺🌼🌸💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Hey Mike! I am growing a few (young) Saguaros in my greenhouse and feed them the same cactus fertilizer that I feed all my other cacti with...i.e. low N, medium-high P & K. They are famously slow growing cacti, so I don't think they appreciate being "rushed" too much, using high N type fertilizers. Do you have experience and recommendations with fertilizing your Saguaros? Cheers and happy growing, hope you are having a great day! 🙏👍☺️🙌🌵🌵🌵💚☀️😎🙋♂️🏜🏜🏜
Well, I live in Phoenix in the great Sonoran Desert where we are the hottest big city in America. Great tips for sure but its so hot here impacted greatly by global warming that the rules have changed. One question, what actual ferilizer do ou use right now? Thanks, Joe.
Hi Roy, glad you found the tips in the video useful, thanks for watching and for your feedback! Yes indeed, Phoenix made it into the headlines last summer for the extreme heat that you all (plus the Saguaros) had to endure...hopefully this year's temperatures will be kinder to you all! When you say that the rules have changed, do you mean for cultivating our plants? As cactus fertilizer I use either the one from Uhlig Cacti or Wuxal. I am assuming both available worldwide via online shops or Amazon. Best regards and happy growing!👍😊🙏🌵🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️
i liberated my first cacuts from the trash. looks like the one over your right shoulder at the base of the tall one (the tiny ball one) thanks for breaking down the fertilizer im pretty sure the poor bastard hasnt had a good feed in a year or more. will they all grow big? can i get my small ball to grow huge? .....in my lifetime?
Hey, thanks for watching, I'm glad you found the infos in the video useful and thanks also for your comments and questions. First of all, well done for saving that cactus of your's from the trash!🏆🏅🎉 It sounds like you have either a Parodia/Notocactus (new/old names for these) or a Golden Barrel Cactus (depending on how far over on my right shoulder, haha)...the latter can indeed grow to pretty large sizes, depending on your climate. In their natural surroundings of Mexico they will grow to 2-3 ft in diameter. Less likely in a greenhouse or on a window sill within a lifetime 😉 If it is a Parodia, then it will remain about the size of the one in my video - you could google, to find out which one of the two yours resembles more👍 In either case, giving it a good feeding 2 to max 3 times a year will be appreciated by the plant! Hope this info helps a bit, take care and happy growing!!🙏😊🌵🪴🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️👍
Hi Mike, no I don't, but that's mainly because I've not yet come across a slow-release fertilizer brand or type that is designed / suitable for cacti. Do you have / use one? 🙌👍☺️🙏🙏🪴🌵🌿🌵🌸🌼🌺💚☀️😎🙋♂️
@@cactusjoe I’ve been using one for years. I give them a small amount of it when they come outside after a long winter in our basement, they’re under lights for 12 hrs on, 12 hrs off during winter. The basement is in the mid to low sixties temp wise. The n number is higher than what you recommend though. I only give them one teaspoon in the spring. Seems like every winter they come out of the basement a little bigger and heavier though. They get little water during winter. I don’t know, I feel pretty lucky to have had them this long, just by luck. The food I use is Dynamite time release cactus food with minerals. The n is quite high, 18. They get a rounded tsp. Each year. Or osmocote balanced time release fertilizer. I sure am glad to watch your informative videos. Am I just lucky because the fertilizer just lays on top of the soil and sheds some fertilizer when the cactus gets watered? Luckily I haven’t killed them with kindness- yet. I just repotted them, bad timing I know, they were too top heavy in the smaller pots. It’s October and time to bring them in Minnesota.
Thanks Mike, that's really interesting to hear, about your time release cactus fertilizers. I will do some research to see if i can get one of those here. I think you are right, as our cacti only get watered quite infrequently, these slow release fertilizers are only mainly 'active' when we water. Yeah temperatures here have come down quite a bit too and I'm moving all my 'non greenhouse' cacti & succulents inside this weekend now too. It's too bad that the dormancy periods are so long in our climate zones, haha! Have a great day, cactus greetings from Bavaria, Germany to Minnesota, USA! 🙌🙋♂️☺️👍🌵🪴🌵🌼🌸💚☀️😎
Hi Michelle, no I have not, so unfortunately I don't have any experiences to share about these fertilizing forms. Do you use these both, what are your experiences?
Wow, that's certainly different and interesting, haha - not exactly what I would use on my cacti though, but glad to hear it works for you! Thanks for watching and commenting, take care and happy growing of course! 🙌👍☺️🙏🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️🙋♂️

I personally use a fertilizer from Seramis at the moment - it's in liquid form - which I hope is quite fitting.
It has a 3-4-5 NPK ratio which I hope is ok, because Nitrogen has at least the lowest portion. I fertilize round about every six weeks (so approximately with every 3rd or 4th watering) which I think works quite well.
It was very interesting to get to know that the soil in arid areas mainly gets its nitrogen from lightning strikes, thank you for this 'fun fact' 😄
Have a great remainder of the weekend and until next time!
Thank you Joe for this very useful video. So many good informations and really clear 👍🌵🌵🌵💚💚💚

Excellent fert. Video Joe!!! Hello from Alberta
Hi Duncan! Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video and found it informative! Greetings out to you in Alberta! 🙏🙏👍🙌😊🌵🌵🌺🌼💚😎
A big source of fertilizer in deserts are bats, birds, mice and spiders. Spiders on smaller plants are a big help, because the carcass of insects is a big source of nutrients. When you have night blooming plants, bats and moths are big pollinators.
Hi! Thanks for watching and for your inputs, have a great day and happy growing of course!

Do cacti need Calcium and Magnesium? You explain everything so well thank you 😊
Awww, thanks so much, truly appreciated!

@@cactusjoe Pheww, what a relief that the ratio is ok! Thank you to you for your great advice, have an amazing weekend!

If you are interested in more information about this, I have a dedicated video on my channel about "Caring for Cacti & other Succulents in Winter" (Gimme a break!).
Just what i was looking for, thank you joe !^^
Super, very happy you found it and that it was useful! Thanks Nick! 🙏🙏👍😉🌵🌵🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️
Very informative video Joe, thanks for sharing. Personally I use tomato fertilizer for my cacti and results are great. Blooming without fail, ofcourse I come from a sunny area so that helps too. Greetings from Malta 🇲🇹
Thanks for watching and glad you found it informative! Thanks also for sharing your own experiences. Greetings to sunny Malta!
4-1-3 (citrus) is what i use for all my bonsai, fruit trees, succulents, caudex, and now my cacti i am thinking i will know if its good in a year or 3
Thanks for sharing, Anders!

Hello, what do you think about 12-12-12 for Gymnocalycium?

Fertilizer ratio for saguaro cactus? Recommendation?
Best regards and happy growing!👍😊🙏🌵🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️
i liberated my first cacuts from the trash. looks like the one over your right shoulder at the base of the tall one (the tiny ball one)
thanks for breaking down the fertilizer im pretty sure the poor bastard hasnt had a good feed in a year or more.
will they all grow big? can i get my small ball to grow huge? .....in my lifetime?
Do you use any “time release “ fertilizer?

I feed my tuny cattes bat poop and fish blood.within a 5 mouth pereid it got 6 ft tall
