    Thank you Joe for this wonderful tour in your greenhouse. I absolutely love your cacti rock bed ! It’s so beautiful ! I wonder if one day you would mak a special video about it to explain how you built it. Is there different section for the soil ? I mean, if you want to change the soil how do you make it ? That would be interesting in a futur video. Ferocactus glancesens and the nudum version are my favorite ferocacti. I adore them ! And what kind of echinocereus was that? The super beautiful one with a lot of buds. Can’t wait for the part 2 !! 🌵🌵🌵💚💚💚

      Many thanks indeed, Anna, fantastic to read your awesome comments and feedback!! I'm very happy to read also that you really liked the cactus rock bed! That has been a dream of mine for a long time and when I moved into my greenhouse a few years ago I finally realised it! But it also changes with time, as I am figuring out what works and what does not... I will indeed make a separate video to explain how I built it, how I maintain it, etc. Great idea, thanks! Haha, yes those Ferocacti are real favourites of mine too! Oh, and the Echinocereus with the buds (...btw, they have exploded into a huge bouquet of flowers this week!!) is E. subinermis, a really wonderful cactus that I can wholeheartedly recommend growing!! Hope you are having a great week so far, have an awesome rest of it too! Happy growing!!

And the best thing is that I bought this echinocereus subinermis v. luteus last year in July in Germany when I visited the Uhlig Kakteen nursery ! It had only one flower last year and but this year it has four buds ! Your specimen is really gorgeous !!

    What up Succa? I really enjoyed that tour mostly because of the slow panning across the shelves to see the mini collections within the greenhouse. How old are your Carnegiea gigantea? I hear the grow very slowly (good). I have one and the spines are black, unlike yours which one had reddish spines. Also, how often are you watering now? I will ask that question again for your shelf planting. That's where I saw the gasteria and when gasteria look good, you pretty much know that everything is healthy. I can't wait to see part two...thanks for sharing!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Many thanks Terry, awesome comments and feedback, really appreciated and also interesting! Very happy that you enjoyed the tour, part 1! In the current hot and sunny weather we are having here, i water approx. every 8-10 days; why? well, it takes about 4 days for the pots to completely dry out after the previous watering, then i keep the substrate dry for 4 days, then I water again - that is my current "cycle".
      My saguaros are 25 years old, grown from seed, and the spines used to be only gray, ...and only recently have they started to become red in the apex, which makes me wonder whether they are actually the so-called "fake saguaro" Pachycereus pringlei??! The seeds I bought at the time however were labelled Carnegia gigantea... in any case, i am very happy with it's progress now...it was kept by a friend for me for about 10 years when I was travelling a lot on business... but that's when it unfortunately got it's etiolated growth. Thanks again, enjoy the rest of the week, and happy growing of course!

    That was the perfect video for a relaxed Sunday evening! 👍🏻 But I must say you ended it with quite a cliffhanger, can't wait to see Part 2 😉
    I wonder how long it takes you to water this huge collection, it must take a full day because I'm already busy for round-about an hour with my ~30 cacti/succulents, haha😅
    I wish you a great start of the new week! See you in Part 2! :)

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад

      Hallo Jacob! Haha, yes indeed, it takes me about an hour and a half to water my entire collection, so often I will do that over two parts, so on two evenings. Also, I do water my "other succulents" a bit more frequently than my cacti. Yes, haha, I did not want to bore you all with yet another very long video, so I decided to cut this one into two parts...and as I would not mind if you all are still interested in watching part 2 also, I had to end with a little bit of a "cactus bed cliffhanger" lol! But, no worries, part 2 will be out very soon!! Thanks once again for all your keen interest, wonderful comments and support, for always watching and commenting, as always all very much appreciated! Have you ever encountered the orchid mites on your aloes? which pesticide works for you?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад

      Hi, thanks so much for watching! No, I have not so far experienced orchid mites, what do they look like, how can I see whether my Aloes have them? I use pesticides only very rarely, and as a preventive one, just before the winter dormancy I use a systemic one called Lizetan AZ (main component: Azadirachtin), but it will not be sold under that name in every country, which is why I mention the main chemical component. But you can also use different ones. However, before you buy one, e.g. in a plant nursery or garden center, do ask for pesticides specifically that are safe to use with cacti! Happy growing!!

    • @drivendraven
      @drivendraven Год назад +1

      @@cactusjoe actually it's hard to notice them really unless you see "red leaves" on the crown/on the new growth, in the stem or if the growth suddenly slows down.. if you try to uproot it and remove some drying leaves you'll be able to see red/orange like powder that's them infesting the core already.. :(

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hey Anders, that is a great question! I think it would be the slow-growing cacti like Ariocarpus but also Copiapoas which I think I would be growing more of if I was starting all over again...with some experience first however, as they are not really easy plants for beginners! But I am also happy that I DO still have quite a lot of very old plants, grown from seed like my 50+ year old Echinocactus grusoniis (...I had a dedicated video last year on those, remember?) and also my tray full of Ariocarpus fissuratus, etc.

      Hi there! A warm welcome to my channel, thanks for watching and for commenting, glad you enjoyed the tour! Also really fantastic to read that you have joined the club of cactus fans and growers, welcome!! Don't worry and no need to be nervous, actually cacti are not that hard to grow if you just follow a few basic guidelines and steps (...in fact, they don't mind a bit of neglect, haha):
      (1) keep in a bright, if possible slightly sunny and warm location;
      (2) grow in a pot that has a hole at the bottom and in a cactus soil/substrate, i.e. one that drains water easily;
      (3) in the growth period (early Spring to early Autumn) water regularly, but only after the soil has fully dried for a few days following the previous watering (i.e. they definitely hate overwatering;
      (4) in the winter dormancy period (when they do not grow) keep in a cool and dry location, water a little bit and only very rarely. Do you know which type of cactus you got, i.e. did it have a name tag? Best wishes and lot's of success and fun!! Happy growing!
