My EUPHORBIA

  • Succulent plants from the plant family Euphorbia are among my absolute favorite succulent plants - besides cacti (so the family of Cactaceae) of course!! These two groups of plants do look a little bit similar, however, they are completely unrelated.
    Yet, they have developed in quite similar ways, with somewhat similar morphologies, as perfect adaptations to dry, arid climates of semi-desert, full desert and grassland or savannah environments (a phenomenon commonly referred to as convergent evolution). I love growing especially these specially adapted succulent Euphorbias from arid and semi-arid areas of the African continent, but also occasionally Asia and South America. Actually plants belonging to the family of Euphorbia, also commonly called spurges, are found worldwide, even in humid and temperate climates.
    This video gives you a quick overview of my greenhouse-based Euphorbia collection, in a fly-by mode. I have decided not to add the names of the plants in this video - I will introduce the plants in smaller groups in future videos on this channel!
    Please enjoy!
    Cheers,
    Joe

      I'm a little melancholy that the growing season is over and my favorite cactus people will be "closing up shop" for awhile. What will you be doing during the down season? I'm just beginning to grow my euphorbia collection and I loved seeing yours. In fact, I'm going to watch again!@@cactusjoe

    Very nice Joe 🙂 Could be convergent evolution, same as a scaffolder in England looks the same as a scaffolder in Germany, even though they're totally unrelated 😁 Hope you have a lovely weekend my friend 😊😊🌵🌵

    Looking good, Joe. Thanks for sharing. I started turning down my lights and shorting my timers this week. It takes me 4 weeks. Systemic application Sunday with the next to last watering. Have you started your overwinter procedure yet?

      @cactusjoe  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Bill, many thanks for watching and for your feedback and comments, always really interesting to hear from you and your wonderful setup & collection! Well, here the weather continues to play crazy, so my winter preparations one day, transition into prolonged growth season the next, haha! We currently still have 27 C highs every day, lots of sunshine still too, but on Sunday the first nightime frost has suddenly been forecast! So my cacti have practically been given an extra month of growing season this year, and they like it, haha! For me it is a bit of touch and go wrt preparations... Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead, best wishes and successes with your winding-down procedures! Happy transitioning! 🙌🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌵🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️

    Nice video Joe! Why not make a more detailed presentation, including cultivation tips? Furthermore, I spotted some stapelia, which I also have and it gives me every year many buds, only to abort them all when they reach 2-3 cm. In lenght. A true curse, I tried some remediation, achieving no result. So I would be very, very glad to know how you grow them.
    Thanks a lot, have a lovely sunday.

      Thanks very much Paolo, for watching and for your brilliant feedback, glad you liked my little collection of Euphorbias! Yes indeed, I will make a few more videos in the coming months, with more details, growing tips, etc. for different parts of the collection. Thanks for your suggestion, great to read that there is interest for this! Regarding the Stapelias: yes indeed, they can be a bit tricky sometimes, until the buds are about 2-3 cm. After that, usually they are ok and develop further to open blooms, with less issues. In my experience the plants drop their buds if there are (marked) changes to the ambient temperature or substrate humidity, so e.g. a drying out of the substrate or suddenly lot's of water. I try and keep the humidity of the soil relatively low (only slightly damp) and also constant, in order to avoid this. Hope this helps! Best wishes, lot's of success with your Stapelia blooms and happy growing! 👍😊🙌🙏🪴🌵🪴🌸🌼💚😎☀️

    Please, can you tell us the name of euphorbia at 0:39 ? I have very similar looking, yet slightly different one. The tag on my plant says Euphorbia pseudoglobosa. However, when I google it it shows very different looking specimens. Mine has more of a teardrop shape, with very pointy top! Also has lots of babies growing of off the mother plant.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Месяц назад

      Hello! The plant at 0:39 in this video is Euphorbia obesa. From your description "...has lots of babies growing off the mother plant" I would not assume that your plant is an E. obesa, as that does not occur with obesa, which is more solitary. If the top of your plant and it's segments ("babies") are very pointed towards the top I'm afraid that might be the result of a lack of sufficient light (see examples of this effect in the video link below at approx.2 :50, but I may be wrong of course as I am not familiar with your growing location for the plant. So, my guess is that it may well be E. pseudoglobosa and that if you grow it close to a sunny window if you can, then it would take on the normal shape of the plants that you are seeing under that name on the web/google. Hope this helps, take care and good luck with your plant! happy growing!
