  • PART 2: If, like me, you and your cactus & succulent plant collection live on the northern hemisphere, then are all of your cacti in their WINTER DORMANCY currently? And ARE YOU BORED BECAUSE THEY ARE RESTING, and you cannot wait for the next growing and flowering season to start up again? Most of my plants are currently fast asleep, but still I AM PRETTY BUSY!!...wondering WHY and WHAT I do during these winter dormancy months? Well, that's what this video is all about!
    Please note: this is the second of two parts to the video! The first part can be found here, in case you missed it:
    • HAPPY CACTUS DORMANCY!...
    The following chapters (in PART 2) outline some of my key activities during this fall / winter period in my cactus & succulent plant collection:
    1:08 Preparing for the potting season
    4:27 Acquiring / preparing seeds for the Spring
    7:47 Insulating my greenhouse
    10:32 Electrical heaters, fans & thermostats in place
    13:51 What about air humidity?
    15:19 Other succulent plants that like some water in Winter
    22:18 What about my Euphorbias & caudex plants?
    I hope you again find this video useful, informative and enjoyable. Sending you all either a HAPPY GROWING or a HAPPY DORMANCY!!
    Cheers,
    Joe

    AWESOME Part Two of your Fall/Autumn jobs to do with the Cacti and Succulents Joe :-D and YAY CONGRATULATIONS on over 2,000 subs and very well deserved too, your videos are so expertly and beautifully filmed and made and you really are so incredibly knowledgeable, AWESOME tips and info you have shared and thats brilliant you have the metal rods on the roof to support the bubblewrap, we found the roof was the hardest part to bubblewrap with our poly haha, and such an awesome tip with the layer of bubblewrap on the door to stop the cold air coming in when opening the door, you have an incredible winter set up for your greenhouse, thanks so much for sharing this really INCREDIBLE and very informative video Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a brilliant Tuesday today XXXX

      Awww, thanks a million, Lyn, really very kind of you! Really fantastic to hear that you enjoyed this part 2 also, and that there were some useful tips in there for you too! Yep, it took me a while to figure out how best to keep the bubblewrao up along the top of my greenhouse, but these aluminium rods now really work very well for me! And they are also great to have hanging pots along these sections of the greenhouse, summer as well as winter! Haha, the "air lock" at the door was another such "discovery", a long time coming, after I had always lost all the warm air as soon as I entered the glasshouse before installing it at the door! Very best cactus regards and lot's of PLANT POWER to you and Hans! Enjoy your weekend and stay warm too!! 🙌🙏👍😊🌵🌿🪴🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️❄️☃️❄️

    Humidity is something I don't have an issue with. Heating with wood keeps the air pretty dry. About 40% or lower. I have a squirrel cage fan that pushes warm air from my work shop where the heat comes in from the outside wood stove out to my greenhouse . My Euphorbias get the blast of warm air right off. If things get too low like below zero F° then I move the most rare and tender closer to the heat source or shuttle them into the house. Like my medusas. They are ate some of the few that I will still give a bit of water to so they don't lose their branches. And Luke you say, some of the aloes & haworthias. Thanks for sharing Joe!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks,out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌸🪴🌻🌿🌾🌳💐🌴🍀🌱😃👍

      Many thanks, Clyde, for sharing your experiences and best practices, super interesting and really very much appreciated my friend! I wish I could have just a few days with only 40% humidity here, haha! Yeah I keep all my Euphorbia in a slightly warmer spot in my greenhouse too, most really do appreciate that! Sending you very best regards over to Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA!!🙌👍🙏😊🌵🌼🌵💚😎☀️

      Thanks so much, Newman, glad you enjoyed watching the video and found it interesting! Thanks, I do need to put a fair amount of focus on the heating system and insulation of the greenhouse as winter temperatures here get pretty cold, often nights in Jan/Feb going down to -18C ...so the survival of my plant collection is rather dependent on these things hopefully working, haha! Thanks again and very best regards and a happy winter dormancy period for your plants and to you in Japan!

    Holy smoke!
    That was a lot of bubble wrap!
    Which also means that someone was very busy moving lots of plants to make room for hanging it all.

      Haha, yes indeed, although the bubble wrap is quite easily installed without the need for moving the plants! I have long aluminium rods placed along the inside of the roof and just need to splice the bubble wrap in between the rods and the roof glazing! Many thanks and happy growing/dormancy!!🙌🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️

    Once again a great video!
    It was a relaxing evening activity to watch your new upload while my cat was laying on my lap and I was enjoying a cup of coffee 😄
    Here in Kassel, it is also starting to become colder now, so on this weekend I definitively have to move the cacti from their outdoor shelves to the insulated greenhouse.
    Have a great remainder of the week! :)

      Hi Jacob! Thanks for watching and I'm really happy that you enjoyed this part 2 of the video too! Sounds like you and your cat had a very relaxing evening, which is excellent, especially as the weather is now indeed slowly but surely getting colder!! It sounds like we will be getting our first real winter weather here from the weekend onwards, with quite some snow and day-time minus temperatures forecast for next week! Yes, you are wise to get your plants all inside now, to definitely avoid damages from frosty temperatures! Success and good luck with the plant moves and you have a great remainder of the week too! Parodia spines do make a good noise Joe 😁 I've been thinking about a de humungifyer too, noticed how long it takes for leaks to dry out in the winter. My cymbidium has got a bud on it too 🙂🙂Lovely tour around and some interesting things my friend. Hope you have a lovely evening 😊😊🌵🌵

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hahaha, Ziggy, yes those spines make a cool bristling sound indeed! Yep, having a dehumungifyer (lol!!) has it's advantages when the weather is as humid as it often is in our parts of the world during the winter months - of course it costs energy and extra money but then again the heat that these devices produce also helps heat the greenhouse itself again. Great to hear that your Cymbidium will be coming into bloom soon too! As always, very happy that you liked the video, my friend, and found the tour interesting. Have a wonderful day and rest of the week!

    Nice work, Joe. Where are you putting your seeds to plant them? I know that you are pressed for space. A question about humidity. I keep 24 hour humidity between 30 and 35 the year around. When I water, it gets up to about 45 or 50, but extra fans and open windows get it down again after about 12 hours. I water every 2 weeks. Thanks for your thoughts?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Bill, wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, my friend! Thanks for watching & commenting and I'm glad you liked the video! In answer to your questions: (a) I keep the trays with seeds (that I normally sow around April) indoors, on the window sill of my study - as indeed I just would not have enough space for them in my little greenhouse! (b) Your levels of humidity around your plant collection are perfect if you ask me! Nice and dry, and even your "humid" 45-50% rel. humidity (it is of course temperature-dependant) would be a dream for me to achieve! The humidity is of course driven by the ambient climate of where our plant collections are growing. In my climate here, outside humidity will normally be around 60-80% and only drop lower to around 50% or less when we either have really dry and cold winter weather, or during hot dry spells in summer. Also, your routine of using fans and also opening windows is definitely an excellent one, both to drop humidity (...unless it is super wet and humid outside, e.g. in the rainy season), but also to simply avoid stagnant air accumulating around the plants - which would increase the risk of fungi and pests. Hope this helps, have a great day!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      The Pickle Plant, Senecio stapeliiformis, likes to be quite dry and cool but in a bright location during the Winter, and it will start showing it's blooms during the Winter too! But it is super sensitive to overwatering and rot! Indeed, waiting till Spring with repotting is a smart move! Good luck and happy growing with it!👍😊🪴🌺

    I have a very small euphorbia obesa in a sunny window in my house. Do I with hold water from it during the winter? I've read so many different opinions. Thank you for your videos!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much, Gaylene, and really glad that you are enjoying the videos! Yes, there are indeed about as many opinions on this topic as there are plant growers out there, haha! I would say, the cooler that your E. obesa is standing, the drier it should/can be kept. And since it is in a sunny window, it sounds like it is in a perfect spot with regard to brightness, so no risk of etiolating, i.e. unnatural thin growth when there is a lack of light. So if you have it at around 10C/50F (or even slightly lower) it can go with just very little water throughout most of the winter months - if however you have it standing at around 15C/60F or higher, I would water it a little bit every 2 to 3 weeks. Hope this helps, best wishes!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Michelle, I think the temperature is fine, but if there is a strong draft at the window, that will likely not be appreciated by all plants! You need to monitor, the plants will usually start showing if they are not happy wirh the setup. Hard for me to say without seeing or knowing the detailed situation. 🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌵
