Kara ❤️I've had Epilepsy for 20 years, and I am currently 30 weeks pregnant! I switched to taking Lamotrigine 12 years ago, which via. my neurologist is one of the safest medications to take while pregnant and has the same chance of birth defects as an average woman without Epilepsy or if so, it's a VERY small increase in chance. The biggest difference is monitoring the dosage throughout a pregnancy as it increases until giving birth to maintain the levels in your brain. I wanted to share because this was a fear of mine until I found an uplifting neurologist who told me women with Epilepsy have healthy babies every day and are possible with the right medication and monitoring. I hope this provides some reassurance, but of course, everyone is different, and I can only speak to my experiences. I encourage a conversation with your neurologist if the idea of having kids becomes more real.
Also! My husband and I love every video you make, especially the physical challenges! Can't wait to watch!

It sounds like your care team is being super thorough and are taking care of you beautifully ❤️ it sounds like they have you on the right meds and are able to help you, the side effects are real and understandable and can change but if your able to manage the side effects that’s good! There are other medication options that may work differently for you fyi; Keppra, Lamotrigine, etc. I think it’s amazing and brave that you share your experience with this because it’s so important and can help others! As someone who has run a 100 in CO, best wishes ! I really loved my experience.
    My best tips.
    1. Run high, rest LOW. Get lower than Leadville some weekends if you can after running up there.
    2. Itwas 75% mental. Your body can put up but sometimes your brain can’t.
    3. Practice your nutrition. This is mission critical.
    4. Don’t expect any part to be easy. This will be important for the mental game.
    5. Even if you’re not running, spend weekends doing “long runs”. Being on your feet in the mountains for 20 hours is difficult. Train those feet, even if you’re walking early morning to night.

    • @Wordsmiths
      @Wordsmiths 5 месяцев назад +13

GREAT tips here. Especially the bit about preparing your feet - most folks don’t realize how little time they spend on their feet, despite doing lots of fitness stuff as normal life. Your CrossFit workout or Orange Theory metcon only lasts an hour; your usual “long run” is only two hours unless you’re a regular marathoner. So unless your work retail or are a CNA or something, your feet are NOT used to bearing your weight for most of the day. Your muscles and cardiovascular system can be holding up well but your dang feet swell and get sore and just give up on you, if they aren’t adapted to carrying you around all day. At any pace!

My son suffered a massive seizure at age 1, with daily uncontrolled seizures since, and we have been on the same exploratory journey as you both regarding epilepsy. Kara’s comment about how her diagnosis changed her entire world view and perspective rang so true as a parent of a child with epilepsy. It never quite leaves your mind, no matter how blessed and grateful you are for “the simple things”. Thank you, Kara, SO much for sharing your experience and your positivity. It has given this worried and heart-sick mother some hope that, even if my son doesn’t outgrow his epilepsy, his life can still be full, joyful, and boundless. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I said, "no! I know there is another way through homeopathy... started him on melatonin, and, immediately, seizures went from gran Mal, to so slight, and short, no one else would have been able to tell he was seizing.... then added the valerian root tincture, and we have cut the pheno from 1, 500mg pill 3x a day, to 1/4 a 500mg pill 3x a day... Guys, I hope you don't get another flat tire but two tips if needed in the future:
Like Nate said, always unscrew the bolts before lifting the van, its weigh will make it a lot easier
Second, once you remove your flat tire, slide it under the van. This way, if ever the jack fails while you are changing it or retrieving the spare, the tire will keep the van up and away from you! Learned this from a nice garagist and passing it along

    • @evanlowe3005

A little advice about tires: they have a four digit number in an oval. The first 2 digits are 01-52 (week of the year). Last 2 digits are the last 2 digits are of the year it was manufactured. It is advised to replace tires every five years especially on vehicles that sit frequently. On vehicles used frequently they can be pushed to 7 years if well taken care of. Hope this helps someone be more confident dealing with their vehicle tires.

Hi Kara!!!! Future pharmacist here - there is a LOT of medications for epilepsy, if you are considering whether or not you want kids now. As soon as you can you need to tell your neurologist before the dose of the medication you are on now becomes too high. The higher the dose gets the lower your seizure threshold is, and it becomes difficult to switch and thus start a family. So you don't want to wait until you KNOW you want kids to begin the process of switching medications. You should do it NOW so that you CAN think about saying YES to kids.

I would also add that it turns them into a one-trick pony, which is neither desirable nor fitting in with their personalities as story-tellers. RUclips rewards them for the same story being told over and over, but it doesn't mean THEY are rewarded for doing so. The fact that they aim to tell a story is why their channel is the way it is now.

You’re VERY VERY VERY lucky to have so many medical professionals reaching out to care. No, pretty sure Kara and Nate invited us into their lives hence their RUclips channel which also provides them a very comfortable life. And, just as it is in all things, you take the good with the bad. I have nothing negative to say about them but when you open your lives to the entire world, you’re going to get the negative in addition to the positive.

@@Derek-Adams Sad fact is people do not understand that if you do not like something, do not watch it. They need to be kind and keep the negativity to themselves. If they would practice that, they would see it is not hard to accomplish. Life throws enough at us, we need to practice kindness on a daily basis.

Normally I'm right with you on that - I've been with them for 30+ years and extremely pleased with every experience I've had with them - until last week. Our car broke down and we were stranded on the side of a "lonesome" stretch of highway, people wizzing by at 65 mph on a narrow shoulder for FOUR hours until they got someone to us (even though they said we were high priority and knew we were in a dangerous location); and there was no rain, not too hot, etc. not a busy part of the day. On the plus side the driver who was finally dispatched to us was great, stopped at the first mini mart available on the highway and bought us (on his dime) two ice cold bottles of water; and towed us the 100 miles or so to our home, since our mechanic was closed by the time they dispatched someone to us.

Health is never guaranteed at any age, we know the odds of one of us in our mid 60’s now, dying in a foreign country or on a ship etc is more real now then ever, but as you said, we are okay with that. We do t want to retire and sit home waiting to die lol. We want to close this chapter with fun and adventure! Like many, I’m here for everything, travel, challenges, illness, happiness, the works! As a lifelong asthmatic I’d like to offer a piece of advice: Don’t underestimate caregiver stress and burnout, especially with your spouse. I’m 58, we’ll have been married 20 years this December and it took me till a health scare in 2016 for me to finally understand that caregiver stress and burnout are a real thing. It’s made me as a patient more empathetic towards my wife and daughter and less selfish, something I’ve fought my entire life. Nate, take care of yourself, caring for Kara is just as stressful as her having epilepsy. I make nearly all of my health decisions now asking “How will this affect my family?”. Putting myself second has been a huge help in making good choices, odd as that sounds. Now get out there and run!!!

Hi from team "Watch Whatever It Is"! Just wanted to say I've been following since at least 2017 and the way the two of you have evolved and grown over the years is the very reason I watch every single one of your videos. Y'all not only inspire me to travel, attempt seemingly impossible physical challenges, and get outside my comfort zone BUT you also inspire me (and others) to live our happiest fullest lives. You went from "just travel for a year", to "100 countries", to "fuck it, we have a company now", none of which would've happened if you'd stuck to a stringent life plan. Instead, you took the opportunities life gave you and did what made you happiest and gave you the most personal growth.
When I started watching your channel I was a teenager and as an adult now I can confidently say that the two of you have inspired me to live my life to the fullest, to seek personal growth wherever possible, and to choose happiness above all else. Thank you ❤🙏

I was coming home to Oklahoma from Durango pulling my camper. When we hit I-40 in New Mexico I got one flat on the trailer. Unhooked the trailer, drove to get a tire, changed it & headed on. About a mile later another tire went flat. Did the same thing & went on my way. About 50 miles further East I got the third flat & before reaching Oklahoma had replaced all 4 tires on my trailer, one flat at a time. I feel your pain. At least in Oklahoma, it’s a law that you MUST get in the left lane when cars are pulled onto the side of the road to give them enough space. You’ll get a ticket if you don’t. But our left lanes on highways are strictly for passing. Don’t get caught cruising thru Oklahoma in the left lane, you’ll get ticketed as well.

As of the beginning of this month, it is now the law in Virginia too, but apparently most drivers haven't gotten the memo yet. We broke down a week ago on a lonesome part of one of our highways and were lucky enough to coast downhill to a barely OK part of the shoulder on the right, just behind some road workers that had all their equipment and flashing lights. It took AAA four hours to get a tow truck to us (long, sad, and very annoying story - worst AAA experience of my long life). Very, very few people moved over and it was extremely nerve-racking every time our car shook when someone went by at highway speed.
I have MAJOR empathy for them changing a tire on the highway shoulder, I would have been right there with Kara staring daggers at all the people not moving over!

I have diabetes and they wanted to put me on insulin. It was a great impetus to lose weight, go on low carb, low sugar diet, and a new medication. It helped so much. It really helps to have a great doctor who is willing to work with you and help you find a new path. Stay on top, girl. Let's keep you both around for a long time.

I just recently discovered this channel. I must say of every couple on RUclips they are truly in a league of their own I'm embarrassed to admit the binge watching but through a very tough few weeks each video brought joy. Prayers that kara gets her health totally manageable. Love the adventures but it's the love they have for each other that makes it so awesome

I've run in the Leadville100 twice! Both times were incredible life changing experiences. My wife and I live in Boulder. She also ran the Leadville Marathon. Let us know if you have questions or need advice. We live in Boulder. Best of Luck! Ryan and Aylyn or Team "Rylyn," as we call our racing alter egos. Hint: figuring out your nutrition is THE key to success.

    Hey guys, ❤
I have been watching since the beginning and have traveled the world with you. I discovered you when my husband passed away. We had saved our whole 47 years of marriage to retire and travel the world. Sadly, he retired in May and passed away in November, so I am traveling and loving the adventures through you guys. Stay safe, keep loving each other, and have enough fun for me and you ❤️❤️
I am praying for you both and especially for Kara. 🙏❤️🙏
    You got this!

I am so sorry for your loss. I’ve been married 32 years and I could not imagine. My dad had passed away right before he retired also and my mom always felt jipped out of the life they dreamed of. They met when they were 15 and he passed away when he was 59. I just lost my mom a year ago now but I know she is where she’s wanted to be since losing my dad and that gives me great comfort.
Just know someone is thinking of you and sending you a big hug.

I am so sorry for your loss Brenda, life can indeed be unfair ! Your comment touched me deeply, how wonderful that despite your huge loss you wish this lovely young couple well, as do I. I watched my dad pass away at just 56 & my mum at 62, both from cancer & robbed of so many years of retirement, after being together since their teens & both working so hard. I approach 60 & my hubby 62 with everything firmly crossed, especially as I had a heart attack at 51. Sending best wishes to you.❤

I’m a long time watcher of your channel and I rarely write, however, I just went on two giant trips a cross the country with three of my kiddos and hubby and it was a long, stressful trip, BUT we entered every state as you did back when and now - Joy is a choice and you both do a great job being real and choosing joy and I’m in tears just grateful for your influence.

It took me having a big scare with my heart to realize that I needed to be a mom. I sobbed in my car the whole way home (alone) at the possibility that I would never be a mom. Your health really puts priorities into perspective. I am now almost 3mo pregnant and so happy that I made this decision every day (even when morning sickness is kicking my butt!).
Also, how stinking cute is Hank. I mean come on, save some cute for the rest of us!❤
