I brought my Trichs outdoors late March because we too had a mild winter. Then it snowed like a foot, nearly completely covering my plants. I didn't even bother bringing them back in for that week. They did just fine.

We are about 50/50 cactus and succulents and was told To slow both down for the winter months, and yet some Of our succulents are still flying along, possibly because In this part of the British isles (essex)we are still enjoying Some great weather. Hi Lyn! Here in Japan it's 30% humidity in winter with sunny days at about 10℃ and nights down to -8℃. All my cacti do fine with low humidity outdoors, and I put a thick polythene, clear sheet round my shelf; like a greenhouse. Just use the heater on cloudy overcast days, and mainly the dehumidifier👍🌵 I do bring plants indoors like my succulents; crassula jade trees, stapelias, hoodia. I leave my Haworthias outdoors all winter😱💢They have a transparent large plastic cover and the tray the pots sit in is insulated with reflective aluminium foil, thermo-foam👍🌵

Thnks, Lynne. I just gave mine a good watering yesterday. I will be moving them off the enclosed front porch a soon as the temps start to drop and into the bay windows with grow lights.. My geraniums and begonias stay on the porch with heaters when the temps drop to 45F.

I've actually had to back off watering a lot of my indoor cacti here! It's been so tricky keeping them alive inside, because desert weather is.... strange, to say the least. I've lost more than half of the cacti I started the year with LOL. Thankfully, they're all easy to replace, but man... it's been a challenge 😅.

Great information Lyn, as always, and this is the time of year you have lots of moving around of plants, such tiring work but you are dedicated to your plants 😊👍🏻🌵 I stop at the end of September, will usually give one half amount of water early September and then again at the end half the amount. As all my cactus live permanently all year indoors some get a little bit if needed once a month but apart from that I don't water again until next Spring.😄

Thank you for this information. I have the largest collection of cacti this year than ever before. I will be bringing them inside to an unheated room where they will stay warm enough to not freeze. I needed to know when to quit watering. I will bring mine inside by October 29th.

Since the winters in Europe aren`t harsh anymore`t I bring my cacti to the garage after 1. of november. I have made good experiences letting them in the open this long.

This was brilliant Lynn, thanks. Like most of us, I am concerned about the cost of electricity and keeping the glasshouse at 5C+ over winter. I hope we are in for a mild one, although that brings different problems in terms of pests in the garden etc. Take care and may the wind always be mild across your cactus house!

@@desertplantsofavalon Always love your positivity!!! Are most cacti able to survive very cold weather (ie below freezing over night) providing they are dry enough?
@@GlasshouseandGarden Awwww so happy you love my positivity :-D a lot of cacti like Gymnocalycium and Echinopsis, Opuntia, Mammillaria and Rebutia are very cold hardy if kept totally dry and can survive below freezing, depending on the variety, as some are less cold hardy than others in the same genus, the air humidity can be the biggest problem, as its the damp air and cold temperature that can be a problem, but if you can open up the greenhouse on the dry Winter days to ventilate as much as possible this really helps, we have a dehumidifier that costs less to run than the elec heater, ( 380w ) compared to our BioGreen heater at 1kw, and think we may be using that on the very cold frosty nights instead of the elec heater, and covering a lot of them with fleece cloth, but keeping the cacti as dry as possible and ventilation is definitely the best XXXXX
This was really useful as I started to collect different cacti since the start of the year and was starting to wonder when to stop watering, also on a side note my first one I had as a gift was 2 years ago and although its lost two growths on it its still surviving 😊

Hi Lyn, i have never used horticultural fleece before but have considered it a few times. In my case, I would use it on some of my balcony plants/trees that are borderline hardy for this climate, like my Canna for example. So the fleece would get wet. I'm a total novice though, so I would welcome any tips on how you apply it: perhaps you can make a video if and when you use fleece? Just an idea. Best to you and Hans
The Horticultural fleece works well for protecting from frost, I have used it a few times on my Epiphyllums in the polytunnel and also we used to use it on some of the more delicate outdoor potted plants, the only problem we find is with the outdoor plants and all the rain we get the fleece gets wet and can be heavy on the plants, now we bring into the house any of the more sensitive outdoor potted plants because of the fleece always getting wet due to the rain, I am not sure if we will be using it again this year but if we do I will definitely make a video, we would loosely wrap the fleece around the plants at least 2 layers of fleece and use pegs to hold the fleece around the plants to stop the fleece from blowing away, thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for an amazing Tuesday XXXX

Thanks! Keeping a close eye here on the weather. Have recently moved severa desert cacti under the outside roof to start to dry out. So much rain here. I plan to move them back and forth into the dry sun and back onto the covered porch till it is time to bring them all in. Wondering if you give your ephitic cacti any fertilizer this time of year.. I usually do one last feed for the Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti, but don't know if this helps or not.

Great video with lots of great information. Do you hold off with the watering for eurphobia plants during the winter? Or do you give a bit of water. What about plants like the Ric rac cactus? Are they treated like a thanksgiving cactus? Also, do the roots of these plants disintegrate without any water whatsoever, whether cactus or eurphobia. Live in Canada and its now middle of Nov. Thank you for the very informative video, Lyn! Indeed the price of electricity will cause problems with the grow-lights this year. I have about 25 tiny Melocacti (about 1 cm diameter) and I can't decide if leaving them in a not heated area, without water all winter long as I do with the bigger cacti, or keeping them in the house and watering them from time to time. I just repotted them from the seedsbed, into single little pots. Can I ask you what you would do?
Hi Vera :-D thats wonderful you have 25 baby Melocacti, I would definitely recommend keeping them inside the house, and watering them about once every 7-10 over the Winter, the reason is because Melocacti need more warmth and water in Winter than the other types of Desert cacti do, and because they are still small seedlings at 1cm, they would need to still be watered regularly over the Winter months, I would overwinter them in a bright light position and at room temperature and a watering once every 7-10 days, let them dry out slightly in between waterings but don't let them go too long dry as young seedlings can dry out their delicate roots if they go too long without water when they are still young, Good luck with growing your Melocacti cuties and thanks so much Vera for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

I have a moon grafted and a strawflower catus. They're in small pots. I don't know much, I just started to take an interest in cacti. Are you supposed to not water them at all in winter or just a bit? Also Is their break over in may?
Thats fantastic you have started to grow cacti, growing these amazing plants is so rewarding, its best to keep them dry over the winter months from late September until late April/May, then start watering again from April/May depending on the weather and where you are growing them, if you are growing them indoors and they are in small pots you may still need to water them very lightly in winter about once every 6 weeks just enough to stop them from shrivelling, I have lots of tips on my website on watering and growing cacti that may help you as a newbie, my website is www.desertplantsofavalon.com Happy growing and have a fantastic plant powered Sunday XXXX

One thing to know about cactus and succulents is they respirate at night instead of day like most plants they do this to conserve water and the key that they all need is a cooler more humid night versus day so they can properly exchange gases

I realize this was a year ago but it just came up in my feed today. What is happening with the roots in bone dry soil over the winter months. Is the cactus living off stored water inside its body. What keeps the roots alive or from shriveling to dust?

I was always surprised to see jumbo sized tropical plants and tropical leaves. I saw this in Clifden in the west Connemara. But it’s an island and like all islands and I suppose tropical plants like the rain and mist?? But how are the cactus getting there too? Surely they can’t be native plants! But maybe I’m mistaken in that too.

Hi there, because the temperatures will still be warm but the day length at this time of year is shorter, its still best to not water your cacti during the Winter unless they start to show signs of shrivelling, because the warm temps will prevent your cacti from having a total overwinter you may have to give a light watering if they show signs of shrivelling, but its still best to hold back on watering as much as possible and protect them from any rain to prevent your cacti from growing stretched during the winter due to the lower light levels, Thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Cambodia for a wonderful day XXXX

I'm a new subscriber. From one second to the next a got addicted to cacti, first it was succulents and then i stumbled on to cacti and i was sold. Don't know why i didn't discover them earlier. In time of 2 or 3 months i am now on to 131 cacti maybe 15% of them succulents. I don't know much about them, i'm searchin for sites where to find if my cacti are hardy or not. When it's dormancy time.. Do you put your cacti out in the garden, or all in this green house. I keep mine all inside my house because that's for the moment the only thing i know. I am scared killing them with this climate ! (i live in Belgium) it's more difficult than i thougt. And watering them. Now i see this video and i am really surprised. How do you manage to keep your cacti so beautifull and watering them all 😱 Do you do it all by yourself? I am alone so i have to take care of them alone! You as well? Where do you start taking care of them. You have a great collection, love it. Thanks as well for your inspiring videos. You should check out the Sulcorebutia rauschii, those are frost hardy and beautiful. They grow loads of little babies and produce flowers too. I find one of the best methods to deal with Cacti is the 'drench and dry' method. I have quite a lot of Cacti indoors, but also have some in a small Greenhouse. Even when they aren't cold hardy, I think if they survive, they will slowly adapt to their new environment. But you can always buy hybrids that have been made more cold hardy.
@@mreverybody1150 I like to keep them indoors, i am afraid of spiders and that sort of insects... if they crawl into my cacti 😨🏃♀... not a hero in that matter 🤣. If i may ask you one more thing. I've bought all my cacti/succulents online because i don't go out much because i am in a lot of pain. From november 2022 till now my last purchase i didn't water none of them. And now i want to put them in terracotta pots. I am struggling what to do because i didn't water them because of winter here till end march. If i put them over the coming weeks in terracotta pots. I should wait a week to water them, correct. and i put all my cacti in front of a south facing window without any protection in front of them because they need a lot of sun is that also good? Or Should i water them first wait a week and then put them in terracotta pots, or the other way round. first in terrracotta pots wait a week and then water them. I have purchased about 150 cacti/succulents also Euphorbia's. So it will take a time to repotting them!! Also i read in a encyclopedia that you should water Euphorbia's all year through even in winter. And i didn't do that since a bought them. I hope they don't die on me 😱... I brought my Trichs outdoors late March because we too had a mild winter. Then it snowed like a foot, nearly completely covering my plants. I didn't even bother bringing them back in for that week. They did just fine.

Hi Lyn! Here in Japan it's 30% humidity in winter with sunny days at about 10℃ and nights down to -8℃. All my cacti do fine with low humidity outdoors, and I put a thick polythene, clear sheet round my shelf; like a greenhouse.
Just use the heater on cloudy overcast days, and mainly the dehumidifier👍🌵
I do bring plants indoors like my succulents; crassula jade trees, stapelias, hoodia.
I leave my Haworthias outdoors all winter😱💢They have a transparent large plastic cover and the tray the pots sit in is insulated with reflective aluminium foil, thermo-foam👍🌵

Thnks, Lynne. I just gave mine a good watering yesterday. I will be moving them off the enclosed front porch a soon as the temps start to drop and into the bay windows with grow lights.. My geraniums and begonias stay on the porch with heaters when the temps drop to 45F.

I've actually had to back off watering a lot of my indoor cacti here! It's been so tricky keeping them alive inside, because desert weather is.... strange, to say the least. I've lost more than half of the cacti I started the year with LOL. Thankfully, they're all easy to replace, but man... it's been a challenge 😅.

I stop at the end of September, will usually give one half amount of water early September and then again at the end half the amount. As all my cactus live permanently all year indoors some get a little bit if needed once a month but apart from that I don't water again until next Spring.😄

Thank you for this information. I have the largest collection of cacti this year than ever before. I will be bringing them inside to an unheated room where they will stay warm enough to not freeze. I needed to know when to quit watering. I will bring mine inside by October 29th.

Since the winters in Europe aren`t harsh anymore`t I bring my cacti to the garage after 1. of november. I have made good experiences letting them in the open this long.

This was brilliant Lynn, thanks. Like most of us, I am concerned about the cost of electricity and keeping the glasshouse at 5C+ over winter. I hope we are in for a mild one, although that brings different problems in terms of pests in the garden etc. Take care and may the wind always be mild across your cactus house!

@@desertplantsofavalon Always love your positivity!!! Are most cacti able to survive very cold weather (ie below freezing over night) providing they are dry enough?
@@GlasshouseandGarden Awwww so happy you love my positivity :-D a lot of cacti like Gymnocalycium and Echinopsis, Opuntia, Mammillaria and Rebutia are very cold hardy if kept totally dry and can survive below freezing, depending on the variety, as some are less cold hardy than others in the same genus, the air humidity can be the biggest problem, as its the damp air and cold temperature that can be a problem, but if you can open up the greenhouse on the dry Winter days to ventilate as much as possible this really helps, we have a dehumidifier that costs less to run than the elec heater, ( 380w ) compared to our BioGreen heater at 1kw, and think we may be using that on the very cold frosty nights instead of the elec heater, and covering a lot of them with fleece cloth, but keeping the cacti as dry as possible and ventilation is definitely the best XXXXX
This was really useful as I started to collect different cacti since the start of the year and was starting to wonder when to stop watering, also on a side note my first one I had as a gift was 2 years ago and although its lost two growths on it its still surviving 😊

Hi Lyn, i have never used horticultural fleece before but have considered it a few times. In my case, I would use it on some of my balcony plants/trees that are borderline hardy for this climate, like my Canna for example. So the fleece would get wet. I'm a total novice though, so I would welcome any tips on how you apply it: perhaps you can make a video if and when you use fleece? Just an idea. Best to you and Hans
The Horticultural fleece works well for protecting from frost, I have used it a few times on my Epiphyllums in the polytunnel and also we used to use it on some of the more delicate outdoor potted plants, the only problem we find is with the outdoor plants and all the rain we get the fleece gets wet and can be heavy on the plants, now we bring into the house any of the more sensitive outdoor potted plants because of the fleece always getting wet due to the rain, I am not sure if we will be using it again this year but if we do I will definitely make a video, we would loosely wrap the fleece around the plants at least 2 layers of fleece and use pegs to hold the fleece around the plants to stop the fleece from blowing away, thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for an amazing Tuesday XXXX

Thanks! Keeping a close eye here on the weather. Have recently moved severa desert cacti under the outside roof to start to dry out. So much rain here. I plan to move them back and forth into the dry sun and back onto the covered porch till it is time to bring them all in. Wondering if you give your ephitic cacti any fertilizer this time of year.. I usually do one last feed for the Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti, but don't know if this helps or not.

Do you hold off with the watering for eurphobia plants during the winter? Or do you give a bit of water. What about plants like the Ric rac cactus?
Are they treated like a thanksgiving cactus?
Also, do the roots of these plants disintegrate without any water whatsoever, whether cactus or eurphobia.

Hi Lyn! Great video! I took the plunge and bought my first cactus this weekend...a thimble cactus. It's been neem oiled and replanted in my mix in a small clay pot. It will be in my kitchen under grow lights so....maybe water until mid-October? Thank you for any advice you have!

I have about 25 tiny Melocacti (about 1 cm diameter) and I can't decide if leaving them in a not heated area, without water all winter long as I do with the bigger cacti, or keeping them in the house and watering them from time to time. I just repotted them from the seedsbed, into single little pots. Can I ask you what you would do?
Hi Vera :-D thats wonderful you have 25 baby Melocacti, I would definitely recommend keeping them inside the house, and watering them about once every 7-10 over the Winter, the reason is because Melocacti need more warmth and water in Winter than the other types of Desert cacti do, and because they are still small seedlings at 1cm, they would need to still be watered regularly over the Winter months, I would overwinter them in a bright light position and at room temperature and a watering once every 7-10 days, let them dry out slightly in between waterings but don't let them go too long dry as young seedlings can dry out their delicate roots if they go too long without water when they are still young, Good luck with growing your Melocacti cuties and thanks so much Vera for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

I have a moon grafted and a strawflower catus. They're in small pots. I don't know much, I just started to take an interest in cacti. Are you supposed to not water them at all in winter or just a bit? Also Is their break over in may?
Thats fantastic you have started to grow cacti, growing these amazing plants is so rewarding, its best to keep them dry over the winter months from late September until late April/May, then start watering again from April/May depending on the weather and where you are growing them, if you are growing them indoors and they are in small pots you may still need to water them very lightly in winter about once every 6 weeks just enough to stop them from shrivelling, I have lots of tips on my website on watering and growing cacti that may help you as a newbie, my website is www.desertplantsofavalon.com Happy growing and have a fantastic plant powered Sunday XXXX

One thing to know about cactus and succulents is they respirate at night instead of day like most plants they do this to conserve water and the key that they all need is a cooler more humid night versus day so they can properly exchange gases

I realize this was a year ago but it just came up in my feed today. What is happening with the roots in bone dry soil over the winter months. Is the cactus living off stored water inside its body. What keeps the roots alive or from shriveling to dust?

@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you! I now live in South Texas and keep a lot of cacti in pots and have some in the ground as well. But I’m new to it. I’ve visited Ireland many, many times. I was always surprised to see jumbo sized tropical plants and tropical leaves. I saw this in Clifden in the west Connemara. But it’s an island and like all islands and I suppose tropical plants like the rain and mist?? But how are the cactus getting there too? Surely they can’t be native plants! But maybe I’m mistaken in that too.
@@TheQueensWish thats fantastic you have visited Ireland many times, it really is a beautiful country, and they are some amazing tropical plants that grow along the coast, the cactus are usually grown indoors and are not native, but some of the Opuntia species can survive in Ireland if they are protected from excess rain, XXXX 🥰❤🌵

Hi Dobrila, keep your cacti dry in Winter with no water until the Spring, Mealy bugs are such a pain but if you use Rubbing alcohol /Isopropyl Alcohol put into a spray bottle and spray the cacti thoroughly every few days this will kill the mealy bugs on contact, once the mealy bugs are dead spray with the rubbing alcohol weekly to keep them away, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Hi there, because the temperatures will still be warm but the day length at this time of year is shorter, its still best to not water your cacti during the Winter unless they start to show signs of shrivelling, because the warm temps will prevent your cacti from having a total overwinter you may have to give a light watering if they show signs of shrivelling, but its still best to hold back on watering as much as possible and protect them from any rain to prevent your cacti from growing stretched during the winter due to the lower light levels, Thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Cambodia for a wonderful day XXXX

I'm a new subscriber. From one second to the next a got addicted to cacti, first it was succulents and then i stumbled on to cacti and i was sold. Don't know why i didn't discover them earlier. In time of 2 or 3 months i am now on to 131 cacti maybe 15% of them succulents. I don't know much about them, i'm searchin for sites where to find if my cacti are hardy or not. When it's dormancy time.. Do you put your cacti out in the garden, or all in this green house. I keep mine all inside my house because that's for the moment the only thing i know. I am scared killing them with this climate ! (i live in Belgium) it's more difficult than i thougt. And watering them. Now i see this video and i am really surprised. How do you manage to keep your cacti so beautifull and watering them all 😱 Do you do it all by yourself? I am alone so i have to take care of them alone! You as well? Where do you start taking care of them. You have a great collection, love it. Thanks as well for your inspiring videos. You should check out the Sulcorebutia rauschii, those are frost hardy and beautiful. They grow loads of little babies and produce flowers too.
I find one of the best methods to deal with Cacti is the 'drench and dry' method. I have quite a lot of Cacti indoors, but also have some in a small Greenhouse. Even when they aren't cold hardy, I think if they survive, they will slowly adapt to their new environment. But you can always buy hybrids that have been made more cold hardy.
@@mreverybody1150 I like to keep them indoors, i am afraid of spiders and that sort of insects... if they crawl into my cacti 😨🏃♀... not a hero in that matter 🤣. If i may ask you one more thing. I've bought all my cacti/succulents online because i don't go out much because i am in a lot of pain. From november 2022 till now my last purchase i didn't water none of them. And now i want to put them in terracotta pots. I am struggling what to do because i didn't water them because of winter here till end march. If i put them over the coming weeks in terracotta pots. I should wait a week to water them, correct. and i put all my cacti in front of a south facing window without any protection in front of them because they need a lot of sun is that also good? Or Should i water them first wait a week and then put them in terracotta pots, or the other way round. first in terrracotta pots wait a week and then water them. I have purchased about 150 cacti/succulents also Euphorbia's. So it will take a time to repotting them!! Also i read in a encyclopedia that you should water Euphorbia's all year through even in winter. And i didn't do that since a bought them. I hope they don't die on me 😱...
