I totally agree, Clyde Morris indeed has a wonderful Euphorbia collection that I always love seeing too! I must say, I bought almost all of my caudex plants many, many years ago (from different sources like nurseries or also online on eBay) when very few people were interested in these plants and the prices were just a fraction of what they are now, totally crazy and out of proportion some of the asking prices that I am seeing on eBay these days!!! Now seeing this video, I remembered just how difficult it is for me to grow succulents from cuttings. I just can't seem to get it. Ziggy lays a few leaf cuttings on dry soil for a month, and each one sprouts roots. Mine just shrivel up and expire. Guess I need to add those on my list of 'impossible grows' along Lophophoras.

    Hi Joe! Maybe someday you can tell us all how that display table drains and how deep it is. I did not know that Parodia get all that corking..mine must not be old enough. I have a big and round Parodia penicillata and another parodia that you have but you did not mention its name. I think it may be something akin to Parodia mueller-melchersii...yours is left of a white rock sort of in the middle of the table. I like your giant gasteria little warty! Happy growing!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hi Terry! Yep noted, sure thing, I will definitely do something specifically just on the setup and maintenance of the table! It is only about 15 cm deep, basically a large, self-made (glued) tray made of acrylic 'glas' - and it indeed has a "drainage level" of coarse grit at the base of the substrate, with a drainage hole at the base of that to allow access water to escape of course.
      The corking indeed only sets in with relatively mature and older plants, many of mine on the table are between 20 and some even 30 years old! So happy that you enjoyed all the plants, thanks for watching and commenting! I think the plant you mean is indeed P. mueller-melchersii, well spotted!! Hi Joe! I have a video request for sometime in the future. I think you are the best cactus person to shed light on the subject. I often think it would be nice to know my plants’ “body language” and be able to recognize and respond to it. For instance, some of my cacti and succulents get a dark body when they need water. Within a day or two after watering, I see them return to a more green color. For my cactus, I can often see them grow and expand after a good watering. Their wrinkles go away and they stand taller. They actually can look like they’ve grown over night. With some of my gasteria and aloes, I notice that the leaves can be flatter and closer to the ground and other times they are more erect. What are they trying to say? Also, aloe plants are reliable for their constantly changing colors. More sun will bring out more color. What exactly is happening? Why can plants do what some people call “melting”? What is the tipping point to induce a “meltdown” and how can you avoid one? Are there other body languages that you are familiar with such as bending toward the light? How about the language of forming a flower stalk? What does that say about how the plant is doing? I think this could be a very educational discussion and one that you are very suited for. It’s a big ask, I know. Might take awhile to capture the befores and afters. But if you already know how to talk to your plants, it might be doable!

    • @cactusjoe

      Hi Terry! Wow, that is a fantastic thought and idea, and very kind of you to say such nice things, I feel a bit like a cactus whisperer or succulent plant physiotherapist now, hahaha! Actually, it is quite a subject, as you say, perhaps not so easy to cover but I will try to work on it, will collect some ideas and video material, let me see what I can do! But, from your question and all the excellent examples in your comment, it is clear that you yourself are an experienced cactus whisperer!
