    Fabulous video. Thank you for adding the plant names again. I know that your viewers are an assorted lot, but us new people have no idea how to reach out to make a purchase or do any research without names. I do not think that cost is a consideration for cactus purchases. Cost has to do with supporting your family, but cactus has to do with supporting your soul. I am 80 years old, so I think that I am aware of the difference. Are you able to move to have more space? Your presentation style is just great, and everyone can readily see your passion. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Bill, thank you so much for your absolutely awesome comments and feedback, really appreciated! I could not agree more with you on your point regarding "cactus has to do with supporting your soul!" I am so inspired by your attitude and activity, and in total awe, my friend, and also hats off to you and your marvellous setup and collection which I am familiar with! Super to read that you liked seeing the names of the various cacti and found that useful too! I will do my best to continue to always make comments about the names of the cacti that I am showing (especially when there is more than one in use). Hahaha, love your comment about the space too, and honestly I have physically only one way that my greenhouse could theoretically still expand... and that is upwards, lol! But over the years I have managed to balance the numbers relatively well, so every now and then I pass on some plants of mine to younger collectors to make a bit of space for me again, haha. Wishing you an awesome weekend ahead my friend, best wishes and happy growing of course!

    Oh my GOLLY Joe :-D what an AWESOME plant Haul, all your new beauties are out of this world GORGEOUS :-D and so many incredible old and rare very special stunners, and they all look so amazingly healthy too, and WOW with the big beautiful Coryphantha elephantidens at 30 yrs old with pups around the base, and WOW with the 33 yr old Parodia mammillosa rosealutea, we have an old one we got from our late friend Bill and still labelled as Notocactus roseletus and we can now re label it with the new updated ID name, and WOW with the big old Thelocactus, and the big old Astro ornatum is so incredible and all the Trichos are amazing too, WOW Joe, we absolutely LOVED your plant haul and they have all come to the PERFECT Cactus Dad, and its so special they have got a wonderful history attached to them from their past growers, thanks so much for sharing your awesome new but old and very special stunning beauties with us, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a wonderful new week XXXX

      Thank you so much, Lyn, I absolutely LOVE all your wonderful comments and very kind feedback! Apologies for the delayed response but it has been a bit hectic this end lately. Indeed as the proud new 'cactus dad', haha, for all these wonderful new "old" plants I feel very privileged to be able to pick up and continue adding to the history of these! I completely agree with you, it is always very special when we are able to take on a new plant such as these, and also get some insights into it's previous growing history and sometimes even about their past owners!
      So especially with plants that can get as old as some cacti can, in a way I think we should think of ourselves more often as the privileged, temporary caretakers of these plants, rather than just simply as their owners! Not sure whether I am making much sense here, ...deep cactus philosophy, haha! Sending you and Hans very best cactus greetings, love, happiness and plant power over to the beautiful Emerald Isle! Thanks again and hope you are both having an awesome day, happy growing!

      @@cactusjoe So true Joe we are privileged temporary caretakers of these plants until the time comes when they pass on to other growers, I used to worry about what would happen to all our plants when we passover haha, but we know that the cactus society would gladly take them and share them to the other society members, we have quite a few in our collection from late members collections and they are always extra special with their history attached to them, XXXXX ❤😃🏜🌵

    Hello Joe! What a wonderful collection of cacti you have added to your greenhouse! I have the utmost respect for the older ones that are still thriving and for you in taking care of them. Again, I am amazed at your ability to keep up with all the names and pronunciation of cacti. I had one tiny bloom on one of my plants recently and I thought of you....I feel like you are sending me good vibes so I can enjoy more blooms to come in the future. Have a great week!

      Hello Cheryl! As always, many thanks indeed for all your wonderful comments and feedback, really appreciated! And so happy that you liked the new "old" cacti and other additions to my collection! Yeah, the names of these cacti can be truly confusing and hard to keep up with, but all I can say is that it is also pefectly ok to simply focus on the beauty of these plants and their blooms, without worrying too much about their taxonomy and latest names, haha! Brilliant to hear about the bloom on one of your cacti recently, and thanks so much for thinking of me then! I am absolutely sure that you will have many more blooms to follow! Sending you many more positive cactus flower vibes for abundant, colorful blooms in the future in your collection! Thanks again and wishing you an awesome week too!

    Oh my gosh, Joe, what a completely brilliant video! I did NOT want to see it end!! You really did get some amazing treasures! I was so impressed to see the ages of some of the older cacti. The Coryphanta cactus was my favorite. Ziggy just had one on his channel and I fell in love with it! But to be honest all your purchases are breathtaking! They are all so healthy and very well taken care of. I think they will all be happy in their new family! This was definitely an educational video, learning about species name changes. Also seeing some cacti I had never seen before. Thank you for sharing this amazing haul! Sending you peace, love and happiness to Bavaria, Germany from Georgia, USA for a Wonderful weekend my friend!

      Thanks so much, Jeff, I always absolutely love reading your comments and all the awesome feedback, very kind of you and really appreciated! So happy that you liked the video and selection of cacti that I was lucky enough to secure from that recent sale here. You are 100% right, they are all in wonderful health and shape and I was so keen to get some of these older and mature ones as I knew that they were coming from VERY good hands! Sadly the gentleman who grew the plants from seed and was a collector for over 60 years passed away last year ...and some of his plants were now looking for new homes. So I feel super privileged and honored to be able to give these wonderful plant 'orphans' a new home! Just jaw dropping! I don't even know what to say...but my favorite moment in the video is when you perfectly express the privilege and opportunity of what it feels like to be the new owner of these rare old beauties. I would feel the same way. I just happened to have recently purchased a Thelocactus riconensis and it is coming in a few days. It was in a six inch pot so it will have some size on it. I also have a fairly large bicolor. I do have a favorite among your purchases and will tell you right off that my favorite genus is eriosyce. I love their spines and look of antiquity. So that eriosyce you showed was jaw dropping! I love the subtle color changes going up the body and again those spines. You went from your last purchase theme of "small" to the theme of "fantastic" or "mature". I think I'm going to have to come back to this video and leave another comment because there was just so much to see. I think these cactus are in good hands and I hope you show and talk about this privilege in future videos. FANTASTIC!

      Thank you so very much, Terry, your feedback and various comments are absolutely AWESOME and so motivating, thank YOU! I am glad that my comments in the video resonated with you, yes I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to give these wonderful plants a new home as their orevious owner, a fantastic gentleman and cactus grower of 60+ years sadly passed away! And some of his plants were now looking for a new home. As you say, it is a wonderful gift to be able to take on plants like these and to continue to support and care for them on their journey!
      Haha, I too simply LOVE cacti from the genus Eriosyce, for pretty much the same reasons you mention too! It sounds like you have some awesome new cacti coming your way too! The evening lighting on the second view of each plant was fantastic. It really illuminated and defined the spines on each plant. I love spines! I think the first echinopsis is in either first or second place judging on that criteria. A repot of that plant would make a nice video if you find a special pot to put it in.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Thank you, I'm very happy that you noticed and liked that special lighting effect, Terry! Indeed I wanted to catch the late and warm evening light, as I thought I wanted to add something slightly more ceremonious, fitting to these very special plants! I love your suggestion of a repotting video of that very beautifully spined Echinopsis/Trichocereus! I have been tempted to still repot the plant this summer, however I think I have now decided to wai, and report, as I usually do, in late winter/very early spring, just before my cacti come out of their winter dormancy! I worry that repotting now may not give the plant enough time this year for good, strong new roots before the winter break.

    That was an excellent video with these wonderful, mostly very old plants! 🤩
    One can see that you couldn't hold back getting these plants for your collection. But I have the feeling that you really have to make your greenhouse bigger soon, haha 😅
    These namens are definitely real "tongue twisters". I ask myself why the taxonomists make it that difficult (especially with these subspecies)?
    In general, I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the beauty of these plants, you definitely made good choices 👍🏻
    Have a great weekend and until next time! :)

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад

      Hallo Jacob! Thanks so much, really appreciate your wonderful comments and feedback as always! Haha, I could indeed not really hold back, had to simply get these wonderful plants... as these very old plants are only ever very rarely on sale (...and they will cost you an arm and a leg elsewhere, believe me!)...and as I knew exactly of the origin / former owner of the plants, I also knew that they came with an excellent previous growing history and "pedigree" so to speak, haha!
      Yes i know, space is as always possibly an issue, haha, however there is physically no way I can expand my greenhouse any more (...other than building upwards, lol!)...but I will worry about than when it happens...so far over the years I have always been able to somehow keep a balance of space and numbers, lol! Yes I totally agree, the constant name changes are VERY annoying to us all, it appears to be a constant battle between taxonomist splitters vs. lumpers and the desire to be the author of yet another new re-classification and name! Anyways, don't get me started, haha! Have a wonderful and relaxing Saturday evening and also Sunday ahead! Kakteengrüße nach Kassel!

    You have completely went above and beyond... that pasacana reminds me of Tershekii, maybe we can call it Echinopsis Terschekii ssp. Pasacana!!! I think it could go either way!!! I especially like this episode! Sometimes my best tip on taxonomy and names sometimes comes from growth rate alone... I think finding the genome instead of the phenome would make it 100 per cent certain... Or you could rely on the taste test! I can tell Bridgesii from Peruvianus and Pachanoi,... Great video, my brother!

      Thanks so much, Mark, really super to read that you enjoyed the video and the plant haul, much appreciated! Yeah, I agree with you it can go either way as the E. terschekii does very closely resemble the pasacana especially when they are still relatively small - from what I know, the pasacana does grow significantly slower...so indeed as you suggest I will keep an eye on the growth rates, thanks, great point! I don't think however I will do the taste test just right now yet, as they grow way too slow for that here in my greenhouse, i.e. are way too valuable for me to cut them up for the kitchen, haha! Impressive, btw, to read that you can actually taste the differences between those three species, amazing my friend! Hope you are having a wonderful week, thanks again and happy growing of course!

    I'll have to admit that there is always a little bit of sadness in seeing old specimens change hands. Many of your new plants were lovingly germinated by seeds sewn by the previous owner and the amount of attention they received throughout all of those years is only a small part of the hopes and dreams each of them represented. I don't even know if I could change their pots except for the first columnar Echinopsis. Don't let that one fall!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hahaha, indeed I will definitely make sure I do not let that one fall - both in the interests of the wonderful cactus spines as well as my feet! Yes, indeed, I was thinking the same thing, I may not actually repot the large ones at all for some time to come, as it looks as if they have been in these pots very comfortably for a LONG time!

      Hi there! Thanks so much for your comments, and indeed I am absolutely thankful, if you can help me more definitively identify my Trichocereus cacti please, as I am no expert with these. And I was equally wondering about T. deserticola being one of the potential options...but for now at least, haha, the plant looks a bit more like a T. chiloensis to me too! Once again many thanks, much appreciated, and have a wonderful Saturday and also Sunday ahead, happy growing!

    I must say, that astrophytum was also a knockout! Isn't that a genus of cacti that gets a little harder to take care of as they get older because of possible rotting, or is it the other way around, that once they are of a big size they become easier to care for? A few of the plants you got actually look quite different than they do when they are young, like the coryphantha elephantides. But I was noticing the pups around it and they have that familiar look. Will you separate any of them, or do you think they contribute to the overall age of the plant? If I were visiting your greenhouse now, you would have to kick me out because I would be gawking at these plants for hours!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hahaha, that is so funny, Terry! No worries, I would leave you in peace, with the cacti, in the greenhouse to watch the plants for as long as you like!! Yeah, totally agree, that A. ornatum is quite a specimen! Yes indeed, the tricky thing with older Astros is that they hardly grow anymore new roots, so repotting can be quite dangerous at times. I do not think that I will actually repot this one for as long as I can get away with it! It is sitting very comfortably in it's pot and I think I will leave it that way! Yes indeed, very well noticed, especially most species of Coryphantha are quite famous for having a juvenile form and then a mature, adult form, so a bit like humans really, haha! So their mature, adult forms will often look quite different from their younger and juvenile forms. It varies from species to species, but this transition often occurs between 10 to 15 years of age! So the pups, as you noticed, were more "typical" in appearance, i.e. the juvenuile forms, which we see much more frequently of course. Best wishes and enjoy the rest of your weekend! Thanks again for all your awesome comments, loved them all!

    Great video. But... these nomenclature changes are just too insane, it is getting out of hand. Trichocereus to Echinopsis ? oh my....
    Also for me Notocactus is always Notocactus. :D :)

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +2

      Hi there! Thanks, very happy that you enjoyed the video! Yeah, fully agree these constant name changes within the family of Cactaceae are super annoying! The good thing is that the beauty of the plants does not change, irrespective which names are given to the plant! And we are all free to use the names we prefer in our collections. Yeah, I have a lot of sympathy for your issue with the re-naming of Notocacti to Parodia...as a big fan and collector of Notocacti, oops, Parodia, I actually keep a list with both names...the original ones under which I got (or grew from seeds) most of my plants alongside the 'latest and greatest' name accepted in scientific literature. This allows me to translate, haha! Thanks for watching and commenting and hope you are enjoying your weekend!

    Ich hatte Mal eine echinopsis eyriesii die 1912 nach Deutschland importiert wurde. Leider ist die Pflanze mir vor 3 Jahren geklaut worden als die in blüte Stand . Das tragische an dem war das ich die Pflanze im selben Jahr tot entsorgt gefunden habe.😢

      Oh, das tut mir aber sehr leid zu hören und das war sicherlich super ärgerlich! Diese Pflanze war sicherlich fantastisch anzusehen und hatte ausserdem sehr viel Geschichte mit ihr verknüpft! Ja leider geht in den letzten Jahren vermehrt der Pflanzenklau um, auch in Verbindung mit der sprunghaft gestiegenen Popularität von Kakteen! Und umso ärgerlicher zu hören, das es in diesem fall wohl auch einfach nur jemand ohne jegliche Pflegekenntnisse war, was auch den Tod der Pflanze mit sich führte. Sehr schade!

    Ich hatte Mal einen fast 2 Meter großen und über 90 Jahre Alten Echinopsis atacamensis ssp. pasacana . Leider wurde diese Pflanze von betrunkenen Idioten im Winter als urinal benutzt weshalb die Pflanze mir leider dann verstorben ist . ( ich habe leider keinen eigenen Garten wo ich meine Pflanzen halten kann weshalb alles auf dem Balkon, Innenhof im Sommer ist und im Winter halt in der Wohnung oder im Treppenhaus) seit dem die eine Wohnung als Studenten Wohnung erklärt wurde gibt es nur Probleme. Ständig Diebstahl oder Sachbeschädigungen . Deshalb habe ich jetzt alles nur noch auf den Balkon und in der Wohnung.
    Ich suche vergebens nach einen guten Gartenverein mit genug Platz. Leider sind die meisten auch dagegen das ich mir da ein Gewächshaus hinstelle.

      Wow, das klingt ja super tragisch und ärgerlich mit dem uralten Echinopsis atacamensis ssp pasacana, muss ja eine fantastische Säule gewesen sein! Leider gibt es einfach zu viele Menschen die keinerlei Gespür oder auch Respekt haben für Pflanzen und Lebewesen, denn wer sonst wollte so etwas dummes machen? Ja, das mit dem Platz ist oft ein echtes Problem, vorallem weil die Kakteen dann auch noch sowohl ein Sommer- als auch ein Winterstandort brauchen. Gibt es vielleicht eine Ortsgruppe der Deutschen Kakteengesellschaft in der Nähe, wo Anschluss und vielleicht Ideen zur Verwirklichung des Gewächshaustraums eingeholt werden könnten?
