    Great video Joe!!! Nice lophos!!! Love the variety of them and your turbinicarpus!!! I only have lopho williamsii texensis and Turbinicarpus polaskii. Have only one stenocactus also, unsure of the species. Thanks for sharing your wonderful plants Joe!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful day!!! Thanks so much, Clyde!! Very happy that you liked the Lophos and some of the other cacti and blooms! Interesting to read about your L. williamsii var. texensis - somehow I find that there appear to be quite a lot of names (fricii, decipiens, etc), floating around for what to me looks like just a "flowing spectrum" of forms, rather than distinctly different and unique ones, of one mainly L. williamsii ...but I'm not a Lopho expert, just ignorant, so there are probably more differences than I currently still appreciate, haha! What matters to me more is that the plants are all healthy and readily show off their wonderful blooms! Thanks for watching and commenting and lot's of cactus greetings going out to you at Morris Park in the Ozarks, Peace, Love, Plants and Happy Growing!!!

      @morrisparkintheozarks6831 Год назад +1

      @@cactusjoe The texensis is just the form that is normally found in the big bend region of the chihuahua desert in Southern Texas, Northern Mexico. I think you are right on variations, I think the only real recognized species is williamsii and diffusa. This is one of those big arguments between taxonomists. As wit many plants. From Morris Park in the Ozarks, Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🍀🌻🌳🌱🌾🥀🌷🌷🌹🪴💐😃👍

Love the sign on your greenhouse, that’s awesome 😃 Unfortunately a lot of the plants I had in bud purged them when I brought them indoors when we had that second freeze. Thanks so much, Daz, as always all your feedback is very much appreciated! So happy that you enjoyed the blooms, and also the greenhouse door sign, haha, that was a wonderful present that I received from my son recently. Really interesting to hear about the effects of that second freeze you unfortunately had last winter/early spring...similarly - even in the greenhouse - quite a few of my plants, especially the large Ferocacti, have also purged their buds due to the constant yo-yo of weather and temps here this Spring. A bit more of a challenge this Spring than last years', I must say! Thanks so much for watching and commenting and very best cactus greetings going out to you and Edith, best wishes to you both my friends and happy growing of course!!

      Thanks also for your kind comments about my Lophs! Yes they can be quite sensitive to mites - a few years ago my entire collection of Lophs was badly attacked, and they were all terribly scarred ...it took about 4 years for all those scars to disappear as the new epidermis slowly pushed the old scarred one out- and downwards. Not sure whether that makes the real difference, but what I do differently now, from when they were attacked, is that I keep them in almost purely mineral substrate (with limestone chips added), i.e. max. 5% organic/soil content and I keep their surrounding quite airy and "windy" through a dedicated oscillating fan in their vicinity. I think the latter measure is generally a good way of keeping many pests away, including mites. Also, many mites are said to like very dry air more than more humid air - so the fan "mixes" the air quite well from where they are standing (hot and sunny, rel. dry) with more humid areas of the greenhouse where my Euphorbias but also Orchids and pelargoniums are located. Maybe that helps too, but not 100% sure yet, as the experiment is ongoing, haha!

I was in awe with your Lophophora setup, it actually looks as if you pulled them right out of nature, it looks just like a natural setting, it gave me a few ideas I now want to try, thank you for another amazing video, and as you say Happy Growing!!🌵🌵🌵

I'm very happy indeed that you enjoyed the cactus collection and also that I have been hopefully able to give you some inspiration and new ideas for your own collection! Just let me know if you have specific questions. Yes, those Lophos, instead of growing them in individual pots I decided - like my group of Ariocarpus fissuratus before that - to grow them together in elongated terracotta plant trays. So far so good. Glad that you liked the "natural landscape" decorations that I tried to give with some limestone pieces around them - that is the same rock they often like to grow amongst in nature! Enjoy your week ahead, and indeed Happy Growing my friend!

    I love your collection, absolutely stunning and oh so healthy! I've been collecting for 2 seasons and am yet to see one of my cacti bloom! I'm in the UK, it's still kinda cool out, I wonder if I should fertilise mine now to wake them up? I've watered them a couple of times since March. Idk, my cacti don't love me I guess lol...need to watch more of your helpful videos! Tysm!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Hi Samantha!! Thanks so much, love your wonderful feedback and comments, so glad you have enjoyed the video and plants!
      Sounds like you are doing all the right things so far, if you have kept them quite cool and dry during the winter months - i.e. giving them the dormancy period that they absolutely require, in order to bloom the following season! Also, slowly starting to water them from March/April onwards is perfect, and you could indeed treat them to a bit of cactus fertiliser now during May or June! Make sure though that it is a dedicated cactus fertiliser (i.e. low in Nitrogen (N), high in Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K) - to make sure that development of buds/flowers is emphasised (rather than growth of the stems - e.g. by using a normal plant fertiliser, much higher in N content). So I am sure that all your cacti DO actually love you, lol, one just has to be patient with these weird and wonderful plants, haha - and btw not all cacti show their flowers as young plants, many of the cacti sold in nurseries will need many, many years to do so. If you do not yet have some of these, try to get yourself some cacti from the more easily- (and younger-) blooming types like from the genus Mammillaria, Parodia, Notocactus, Rebutia, Gymnocalycium, etc.
      Hope this helps a bit. Keeping my fingers crossed that you are rewarded by your cacti very soon for all your efforts! Have a great week ahead and happy growing of course!!

    Amazing collection! i was wondering, what do you use for pest control? I live in Denmark and need to order some stuff for mealybugs and spider mites in Germany, just not sure what works?? Thx a lot and best regards :)

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад

      Hi Nick!! Thanks very much, so happy that you liked the video with my cactus collection and blooms! With regard to your questions about pest control: to be honest I try and use as little pesticides as possible, so I try and really focus on preventive measures, amongst which probably the most important are: growing the plants quite "hard" i.e. completely dry and cool in winters and quite infrequent watering and sparse fertilizing even in the summers - AND lot's and lot's of fresh air and also air movement (via oscillating fan, when the windows of the greenhouse cannot be opened). Most pests and also fungi thrive more in stale, "standing" air - hence the fan (or open windows). Btw, spider mites usually thrive in very dry, standing air.
      Also, I have found that using a mineral-rich substrate (max 20% organic compounds like soil) or my cacti does keep quite a lot of pests away too.
      I use a systemic pesticide (Lizetan AZ) once in June and once in September. A contact-type of pesticide is only used when I actually have visible proof of a pest attack, never just as a precautionary measure. Most "normal" mealy bugs (...unless they are the dreaded root mealy bugs, far more difficult and serious!) can be killed off quite well with a spray of rubbing alcohol or isopropanol alcohol - several spray treatments over the period of 10 days needed to make sure that not only the visible, parent pests but also their newly hatched, young ones are effectively treated.
      Hope this helps a bit! Thanks for watching so many of my videos and for commenting! Sending very best cactus greetings from Bavaria, Germany out to you in Denmark!!

      @@cactusjoe Just asked myself: How exactly do you define "quite infrequent watering"? 😅
      Does that mean once a week? Or just every two weeks? Would be interesting to know... 😁
      I hope you have a relaxed sunny Thursday in Bavaria as we have it here in Kassel now! :)

      @@jacobsiebert2204 hello Jacob, haha that means watering only every 2 weeks, ...or even 3 if the weather is cool and rainy! In other words, after watering it takes about a week for the substrate to totally dry, then I make sure that the substrate stays totally dried out for at least another week before I water again...so 2 weeks. That's what works best for me. Others will have their own prefered schedule. Hope that helps. Thanks, it is indeed a wonderfully sunny day today here as well! Grüße nach Kassel!👍😊🌵🌵💚😎

      @@cactusjoe Thanks for the fast answer! :)
      I think I have a "routine" quite similiar to yours, seems to work for me too 👍🏻
      Apart from that: When I fertilize, I first give the plants a bit "pure water" so that the substrate isn't completely dry anymore and then a few minutes after that water a second time with fertilizer. Do you do the same?
