  • Finally, Spring is here! The first buds and flowers have appeared on some of my early bird cacti and other succulent plants, including Mammillaria, Thelocactus, Rebutia, Astrophytum, Neoporteria, Disocactus, Rhipsalis, Aloe, Euphorbia and Senecio! I am showing you some of these first buds and blooms from my greenhouse cactus and succulent plant collection. I have also started watering - ever so slightly and carefully - many of my plants for the very first time this growing season. They have been standing very cool and dry since back in October of last year, sleeping through their dormancy period! Please join me for a short tour and early Spring update from my cactus & succulent collection!
    Enjoy the video!

    Hello Cactus Joe, I'm new to your channel. This is an outstanding video! The flowers at the end are awesome! The cacti you showed with buds are all beautiful! It's exhilarating and exciting waiting to see the beautiful flowers. I have 10 cacti and 7 succulents and they all live in my dining room window. Also I live in Georgia - USA. Thanks for the wonderful video and I hope you have a great weekend!

      Hello Jeff, thank you and a warm welcome to my channel, great to have you on board!! Thank you so much for your awesome feedback and comments, I'm so happy that you have enjoyed the video, plants and flowers. Sounds like you have a very nice collection of cacti and other succulents yourself, and that's brilliant that you are able to grow them in your dining room window! I did exactly the same for quite a few years also, and cacti & succulents are the perfect plants for that! Sending you lot's of cactus & succulent greetings from Bavaria, Germany to Georgia, USA - hope you are having a wonderful weekend, take care and happy growing of course!! 👍🙏🌵🌵🌱🏵🌼🌻💚😎

    Wow! Your plants are indeed awake. So many flower buds already forming! Spring here is very late. Our weather is still very cold, very unusual in here. I’m looking forward to your flowers, Joe! Happy spring. 🌵🌼🌵🌸

      Thanks so much, Ana, Happy Spring to you too! Yes, from your videos I gather that you have had some unusually cool weather so far, hopefully it turns back to normal soon again. We have been having a bit of a rollercoaster with the temps here, one day frost and cold, next warm and sunny, always lot's and lot's of rain, etc. So it has been a bit of a challenge to time the watering and also plants I think are still hesitant to really get going, haha! Thanks so much for watching and for commenting, appreciated!! Hope you are having a very nice weekend, best wishes and happy growing of course!! 👍🙏🌵🌵🌱🏵🌼🌻💚😎

      Thanks so much Bill, as always very much appreciated, and very happy that you enjoyed the video!! Haha, indeed we are slowly moving into that time of the year where there are always new surprises and blooms to discover. Funny enough, they usually come in phases and so there are a few very busy days with lot's of blooms at once, followed by a quieter period again, and so on, probably driven by the weather. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend, sending you lot's of cactus greetings, take care and happy growing of course!!👍🙏🌵🌵🌱🏵🌼🌻💚😎

    When watching a video about cacti, I can't help but feel amazed and in awe of their wild beauty. Cacti with their rough branches and delicate leaves exude life and toughness of the desert. I feel like I'm drawn to their resilience and uniqueness.
    It's fascinating to know that cacti can survive in some of the harshest conditions on earth, where water is scarce and humidity is low. They can also exist in dry and sandy environments. This shows that life can thrive in places where we think it's impossible.
    Witnessing the uniqueness and vitality of cacti makes me feel impressed and more respectful of nature. We need to preserve and protect their habitats so that they can continue to exist and flourish in this world.

      Hey Mark! Thanks so much, very happy that you liked the plants! Indeed these two Mammillaria are quite closely related - in fact, M. longiflora is the "type species" and the other one is now called M. longiflora ssp. stampferi as it is considered simply a subspecies that grows at much higher altitude locations (2600 m). Have a great day, take care and happy growing!!

    Yeah Joe, I can hear them now... ahhhh! Yes quite a few are blooming now in the greenhouse!! And plants outside!! My favorite time in the greenhouse!! Just fed a few today. Can't wait to put some out!! Some of the bigger cactus I won't feed till I can get them into full sun. Don't want any etiolation. I don't think it's intense enough yet. Soon I will put agaves out and opuntias first. Since they are a little more cold hardy. Love that strombocactus!!! Really nice!!! My aloe humulis has already bloomed, looks like yours isn't far away!!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful plants Joe!!! In the southern hemisphere this period of time is also important as many summer rainfall plants make use of the last autumn rain for a bit of growth before the winter dormancy

    WOWSERS AWESOME Spring update Joe :-D and thats so exciting you have buds on so many of your plants already, and beautiful Epiphyllum bloom, your plants are way ahead of ours, many of our Succulents and Epiphyllums are showing signs of buds, but most of all our desert cacti are still snoozing the laid back Irish way haha, its so good to get starting with the first watering of the year, and its so good to start them up with a pre water to wake them up, the weather has warmed up a lot here too thank goodness, I haven't watered any of my desert cacti in the polytunnel yet but hope to make a start on them very soon with a bit of pre watering too, thanks so much for sharing this fantastic update with us, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a wonderful afternoon XXXX

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Год назад +1

      Thanks very much, Lyn, glad you enjoyed the video!! Haha, indeed mine were all snoozing until about 10 days ago too, and then suddenly (...it took only 2 or 3 sunny days!) there was a real rumble in the shed and out of nothing, buds started popping up on a whole series of plants, as shown in the video!! Great to hear that you also do a bit of a pre-watering to start off, before the actual, proper watering starts sometime in April. The weather here has been (and continues to be...) really unstable, a few days mild then frost again, then tons of rain, then cool, then warm, everything really. So it has been difficult for the plants to really get going so far....but it is now just a matter of time, and then, we will probably jump immediately from winter-like straight into full-summer with lot's of heat and draught again, lol!! Thanks again and sending you and Hans the very best cactus greetings from Bavaria to the wonderful Emerald Isle for a lovely Thursday evening and Friday + weekend ahead!! Hi Anders, indeed this transition in early Spring always is a bit of a challenging time, I currently have exactly the same issue as you nicely describe...so what I do is open the greenhouse windows or even door a bit during the daytime, to stop temps rising too high. Do you have an automatic window opener (hydraulic, fluid in piston) installed? That helps quite well, I find.
