A Truly Unusual Cactus in Bloom in my Cacti & Succulent Greenhouse Collection: Pterocactus tuberosus

- I must admit, when I received this cactus as a present last autumn I was initially not too impressed by it: a tangle of thin, brownish-green stems with a few, though unusually shaped, thin spines, almost like scales of a snake skin...HOWEVER, fast-forward 7 months...and I have just been proven sooo wrong by this plant!!! It has just developed an amazing and rather spectacular bouquet of blooms, coming straight from the tips of the unusual stems - with flowers in a most unusual golden to yellowish-brown color!
The plant has just proven once again: there is no such thing as an ugly cactus!!
Come and join me in my cactus greenhouse to take a look at this amazing cactus, weird but definitely WONDERFUL: Pterocactus tuberosus.
Cheers,
Joe

A plant that looks like a collection of prickly sticks can produce the most magnificent blooms! They're brownish-yellow which is so interesting. I find the alien-looking specimens like this one fascinating I've never heard of this genus before. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Haha, Justin that is indeed a great description of this unusual cactus, love it!😁🙏👍 Yep, I am a big fan of all these really weird looking succulent plants too, ...but you've probably noticed that from my videos already, haha! I can definitely recommend growing this one if you can pick one up somewhere! Have a wonderful week ahead, take care and happy growing!!🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌼🏵🌵💚😎
WOWSERS Joe :-D your Pterocactus tuberosus is INCREDIBLE, the blooms are absolutely BEAUTIFUL, what a wonderful way to start the day to wake up to see these stunning blooms, they are so awesome and remind me of beautiful 'Buttercups' Ranunculus Plants with the golden shiny blooms, I really love how unusual looking Pterocacti are, I have a tiny one but I think its going to be a long time before I see it flowering haha, thank you so much for sharing the stunning beauty with us Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a blooming lovely Sunday XXXX

Joe...So happy you had such a nice surprise awaiting you this morning!! It is a beauty and it is in the right home...you know how to look after everything!! I bought 4 adeniums and am hoping I can keep them alive and hopefully blooming one day. I got them on ebay and they are super nice plants.
Hi Cheryl! Thank you, loved reading your awesome feedback, and thanks for your kind words! Wow, it sounds very exciting, your 4 new Adeniums, they do have awesome blooms! Really is an awesome plant and equally awesome blooms. I’ve had my one for about two years now but it hasn’t flowered for me yet. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a lovely evening and upcoming weekend from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜
Thanks so much Daz, really very happy that you enjoyed the blooms of this wacky little cactus too! Hopefully your specimens start showing off their blooms for you very soon too! Sending you and Edith very best cactus greetings for a terrific Tuesday and a wonderful rest of the week! Happy growing!!👍🙏😊🌵🌱🌵🏵🌺🌼💚😎
Now I want this cactus too! Really amazing, beautiful in its weirdness and gorgeous flower. I think I saw a mealy bug on a stem at 4:51 minute 😱 Thank you for sharing, Joe!
Haha, excellent @Vera Vera , really great to hear that you like this quite weird cactus too!! And you know, that mealy bug, so bold, haha, I had to laugh so loud when I was editing my video recording and suddenly noticed it for the first time too! I decided to leave it in the video, suspecting that someone, obviously someone with experience, will possibly pick it up, haha... so, well done indeed! And now, in the summer, there are plenty of wasps and other predatory insects that hunt down the mealy bugs as juicy snacks, haha, so I left it on the plant too! (...and it was indeed picked off less than an hour later!). Thanks again and have a great Thursday afternoon and evening ahead! 🙏🙏😊👍🌵🌼🏵🌵💚😎
@@cactusjoe Haha! Wasps are really useful insects! Thank you again for your great videos, Joe!
Pretty cool, Joe. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, Bill!! As always, wonderful that you enjoyed the video and this unusual cactus, thanks for watching and commenting!! Enjoy your Thursday afternoon and evening ahead, best wishes!🙏👍😊🌵🌼🌵💚😎
Wow Joe! What a beautiful way to start the day! I love Opuntias, however I don't have one in my collection yet. You said you must be doing something right; I think you are doing everything right! From looking at the Pterocactus itself, the flowers are an awesome surprise. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful beauty. From Georgia, USA to Bavaria, Germany I hope you have a blessed day and Happy growing my friend!
Many thanks indeed, Jeff, for your lovely feedback and very kind comments! Yeah, I must say, I too love Opuntias, but I hardly have any in my own collection, simply because I lack the space that they often require, plus I just have so much respect for those tiny, nasty glochid spines, haha ...so this particular member of the larger Opuntia family is just perfect for me...small and not too nasty, haha!! Sending you too very best cactus greetings my friend, from my little greenhouse in Bavaria, Germany to you in Georgia, USA!! Have a terrific Thursday!😊🙏🙏👍🌵🏵🌼🌵💚😎
I got one of these years ago! Now I've got them everywhere! Their reluctant to flower but are beautiful. I've left all mine to mother nature. They take 49c and have been through multiple floods. I would recommend these for beginners.
Thanks Benjamin, great to read about your experiences with these plants! I agree that they are quite suitable for relative beginners to the hobby. Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciated!😊🙏🙏👍🌵🌼🏵💚😎
I have a Pterocactus tuberosus that I’ve been growing for around 20 years it has a truly enormous root and like you said it does look rather like a potato. The seeds and seed pods are even weirder!! Strange little cactus but I really do love it🙂
Hi Matt, yep indeed, I love this cactus too! WOW, that is sooo cool to read about the seeds and seed pods being even weirder than this little potato of a cactus, lol! You really got me excited now and I hope that there are some seed pods developing on mine now, haha! Your 20 year old specimen sounds absolutely awesome!! Btw, how big is it roughly, in comparison to mine (...I have no idea how old mine could be)? Thanks so much for watching and for your lovely feedback! Happy growing!
What a lovely plant Joe. Almost like a Astro Capit-Medusae. Convergent evolution doing its thing!
Yep, it does indeed look like that a bit, haha! And indeed I also have a few other, non-cactus plants, e.g. like Ceropegia stapeliiformis, which would also fit the bill here for classic convergent evolution! Thanks, great point! Thank you for watching and commenting, enjoy your week ahead!🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌼🏵🌵💚😎
Wow, Daz of @cactimania gave me cuttings of this and they are now rooted. They are still small, but I am looking forward to seeing the flowers after watching your video.
Hi Ana, thanks very much for watching and for commenting, very happy that you enjoyed this rather unusual cactus - it does grow quite quickly, so you should be enjoying it's flowers very soon! Definitely something to look forward to! Hope you are enjoying your weekend, wishing you a great week ahead!!
That is so amazing, such beautiful blooms!!! It almost looks like it's dead, you've done a wonderful job with all your cacti.
Thanks so much, Jena, I'm really happy that you too enjoyed this unusual cactus and it's blooms! Haha, you're so right, it DOES actually look as if it is dead!😂 Thanks as always for watching and commenting! Have a wonderful week ahead!🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌵🏵🌼💚😎
Very interesting! 🏜🏜🏜
Thank you, Elda! 🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌺🌺💚😎
Wow wow I have never heard or seen one of those thanks for sharing
Haha, I love your awesome feedback, Marlene, thank you so much!! Yeah, I can definitely recommend growing this one, it's such an amazing cactus! Enjoy your Saturday and have a super Sunday ahead too, happy growing!!
Most excellent Joe 😎 Looking forward to seeing mine flower, as I said earlier a certain Cactimaniac sent me some 😁 I've got them with the Cylindropuntias as that seemed the closest to them. Brill video, have a lovely evening my friend 😊😊🌵🌵
Thanks so much, Ziggy, so happy to read that you too liked this unusual little plant! Keeping my fingers crossed that your specimens show you their awesome blooms soon! Thanks for watching and have a wonderful week ahead! 😊👍👍🙏🙏🌵🌺🌺💚😎

Espectacular saludos Joe 🤙🌵
Gracias, Vanessa!🙏🙏😊👍🌵🌼🏵💚😎
I couldn't find one online, so i made my own by sticking a dozen or so pretzel rods in a clay pot with some soil.
Haha, such a great description, love it and sounds excellent!! 😂🙏🙏👍😊🌵🌺🌺💚😎
Lovely wierdo
Haha, thanks Anders, indeed...and as you have probably noticed by now, I have a real soft spot for all the really, really weird ones among the cacti and other succulents, haha! So fascinating! Have a wonderful Thursday afternoon my friend, thanks so much for watching and also commenting, as always very much appreciated!🙏🙏😊🌵🏵🌼🌵💚😎
Such an amazing plant from kind of ugly to beautiful. I had to google PTERO part of the name, because the name kind of reminds me of the dinosaur names pterodactyl and pterosaur. Apparently Ptero means having wings. Good to see your cacti are thriving. I added a few new ones to my collection, including a paperspine cactus (opuntia), Euphorbia Suzanne, several Parodia and a nice Caudex trunk Adenium. The Adenium looks like small bonsai tree.
Hi Andy! Yep indeed, it definitely borders between ugly and beautiful, haha! If I am not mistaken, the name "having wings" refers to the seeds of these plants, which ...again very strangely!! ...have little wings to help with seed distribution and propagation in their windy Patagonian habitats! WOWsers, it sounds like you have added some really beautiful new additions to your collection! Have fun with these and happy growing of course!!
Thank you ,good information.I have some, you give inspiration mine have not bloomed.
Hey Millie! Great to hear that you found the infos in this video useful and inspiring, thank you! Keeping my fingers crossed that your own Pterocacti bloom for you in the next growing season! Best wishes and happy growing of course! 🙌🙏👍😊🌵🌵🌼🌺💚😎☀️
Very unusual, very beautiful! Have you propagated the pterocactus?
Hello Cherie! I'm so happy that you enjoyed and liked this unusual little cactus too! Yes indeed, I am currently in the process of rooting two of the smaller stems that broke off from this plant. Am looking forward to seeing how easily they root in greenhouse cultivation... Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Have a great week ahead, best wishes and happy growing!!
Love these videos! Do you ever do Zoom presentations? My club would love to have you as a presenter next year if possible.
Hi Rebecca! So glad that you are enjoying my videos, many thanks for your awesome feedback, really appreciated! I don't normally do Zoom presentations about my cacti, but if there is enough interest, we could perhaps set up something in the future, thank you for the invite! Whereabouts are you based and what type of club and audience? Wishing you a super Sunday and great week ahead, happy growing!
Wow! The flowers are beautiful. Flower color is dark yellow? Tanned yellow? Strange color😊
Thanks, so glad that you liked this flower too! Yeah, it is indeed some sort of golden brownish-yellow, whatever...simply uniquely beautiful, haha! I'm sure a painter would have the correct term for us plant folks, lol! Thanks for watching and commenting, enjoy the rest of your day, best regards!👍🙏🙏😊🌵🌵🏵🌼💚😎
@Cactus Joe It is 11pm here, Joe. I go to bed looking to see my cactus under morning sunlight. Have good rest of the day^^
@@Cactopia11 ah, yes, 11pm, so sorry my friend, in that case, definitely wishing you a good night's sleep instead, haha! 😴😴👍
@Cactus Joe
Thank you, Joe.
I enjoy your video, and happy to see your affection for cactus.
Great video! always a fan of your content. By the way i'm from Argentina! 😊
Thanks a million, Rodrigo, for your awesome feedback! So happy that you are enjoying the videos, super! Sending you lot's of cactus greetings and very best wishes from Bavaria, Germany to Argentina! Have you ever had the chance to see any of these wonderful cacti in their natural habitats in Patagonia? Have a great week ahead!👍😊🙏🙏🌵🌵🏵🌼💚😎
Your pterocactus is beautiful, I recently bought a small one and I really love it 😊
Hi! Brilliant to read that you too have a Pterocactus - they grow relatively quickly so you should hopefully be enjoying yours in bloom very soon too! Thanks so much for watching and commenting, so glad you enjoyed the video, best wishes and a great week ahead!
@@cactusjoe thank you! I didn't know they grow fast. 😮
If you like the "dead" look of pterocactus, try looking for euphorbia platyclada, if you don't have one! I really love mine, I have two varieties
@@Nanethiel13 well, as you know, "fast" is all relative with cacti, haha! Thanks, will be looking out for one to add to my collection of Euphorbias, which I all love! Have a great day!😊👍🌵🌺
Great video! 🌞 I think its especially interesting how there is this fluent development from stem to flower bud, one wouldn't think of that in the first place. I wonder what causes this characteristic brownish color of the stems, it's quite unusual for a plant because one would suppose it's semi-dead😅 Is that a Monstera in the background standing in your garden there (9:10)? 😊
Greetings from Kassel to Bavaria! :)
Hi Jacob! Thanks so much and very glad that you again enjoyed the video! Yep, this Pterocactus is quite special and unique in many ways, not just the colour, which - I'm not sure - but may help as a camouflage in it's habitat...especially as it does not have very strong spines as a protection from being eaten by predators. Yes indeed, that is my very old Monstera in the background...it even blooms once a year! Hope you are having a relaxing weekend, best wishes and have a wonderful week ahead! Kakteengrüße nach Kassel!
