GOLDEN BARREL CACTUS - The Oldest Cactus in my Collection - Echinocactus grusonii

  • The two oldest cacti in my cactus collection no doubt are two Golden Barrel Cactus siblings (Echinocactus grusonii). I received them back in 1973 as tiny 3-year old plants grown from seed by a collector who gave them to me as a present. They were among the first dozen or so cactus and succulent plants that I had in my modest collection as a young person infected by the cactus bug - alongside some other excellent cacti very suitable for beginners including several Mammillarias, Echinopsis, Parodias/Notocacti and Opuntias.
    The Golden Barrel Cactus is a beautiful cactus that I can recommend growing in every collection! They are very slow growing cacti, and their flowers only show after many decades of growing from seed! However, even without flowers, they are truly beautiful plants thanks to their unique spines, color and shape! They are ideal and fantastic life-long companions for all cactus fans and will easily become eye-catching centrepieces in every collection - which is also why they are so popular with every botanical garden in the world that grows succulents! And they are also among the most commonly sold cacti in nurseries, plant centers and even many supermarkets around the world.
    The chapters in this video include:
    00:10 How I got these plants
    01:45 Very early members of my cactus collection
    02:15 Grown indoors on windowsills for most of their lives
    03:10 When will they bloom for the first time?
    04:26 Siblings with very different growth histories
    05:34 Care tips: excellent cacti to grow for beginners!
    07:16 Several beautiful varieties available
    08:07 Unique spines & barrel shape
    08:30 Definitely a cool cactus worth growing!
    09:18 Your experiences with these cacti? Have yours bloomed?
    Please enjoy the video and happy growing!!

    Lovely video, Joe. I have several of these, including a couple of white spine ones I got recently. Not sure on the age of my oldest plant, but probably has to be the one from my dad’s collection that I saved. If I had all the plants he had today, some of those would definitely be 30 or 40 years old by now. Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful evening and new week from Edith & myself. Hey, Daz! Many thanks indeeed as always for watching and for your comments and infos. Great to hear that you have a few of these also - have any of them bloomed in your greenhouse for you yet? On a more personal note, I am really, really interested to learn more from you about your dad and his collection - I know you have shared in one of your relatively recent and wonderful videos some infos about e.g. the Echinopsis plants that you have from his previous collection - for that, perhaps we could best connect 'offline' if you like, e.g. email? Once again many thanks, Daz, and wishing you and Edith a wonderful week ahead, very best wishes to you both and happy growing!! 🌵🌵🌵🙂

I do have a few photos of his collection, no videos unfortunately, and nothing from the early days of his collection as that was way before the internet etc lol. My oldest Plants in my collection are two lophophora. I got these when i was 18. I am now 59. I have one e Echinocactus grusonii a little bit larger than your single one. I bought it when it was about 4 inches across . It's about 18 inches across now. No blooms yet. I have a multi headed one I bought last year, not near as large as your cluster. It's an albispinus ( white barrel) I don't know how old it is. Plus 5 seedlings (gold) I grew from seed that Deb bought for me. They are an inch across, about 3 years old. Gotta love our old ones!!! @@cactusjoe I would love to feature the lophos but unfortunately laws here prevent me from getting too brave. Although many people here in the states have them, there are still laws against their possession and cultivation. I think it's kinda a double edge sword, the laws I think cover them as a drug & protect them from poaching in the wild here in the states(Texas) where they grow. It's a shame, but I understand the poaching reason the most. Anyone who has these as part of their collection would never destroy them for their alkaloids. 41years is a long time!! And my biggest pleasure from them is to see them flower every year!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌷🌳🌻🌴🌿🏵🌲😃👍

I remember as a boy an Echinocactus grusonii my mum grew from seed and it grew to about 4 inches in diameter and just had the hard life in all the weather. Now living in a different country I started collecting again back in 2007 I think, And that brings me to my oldest cacti; a Escobari laredoi. It's about 13 years old and 20cm tall👍And a Notocactus horstii v. purpureus. I also have an old Hamatocactus hamatocanthus😆I get tongue twisted saying that name! haha interesting to see such old plants at such small size. mine are around 33% that size and 10 years old. i have some trich peruvianus that i grow from seed and under hard cultivation. in 8 years, they've grown 3cm in size, while the ones I water more and care better for are crossing 140cm. 3cm vs 140cm, same seeds :D cacti are crazy adaptable

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  6 месяцев назад

      Hahaha, yes indeed, you are so right to say that cacti are crazy adaptable, they really are!! And they are the most amazing opportunists too, if conditions are good they will grow a lot and super fast...but, if things are tough, they will just slow down, literally just sit it out and wait for better times, lol! Yep, I have quite a few examples of cacti too, that are just like the examples you have shared - same species, but different treatment or conditions...and therefore quite stunningly different sizes (and even spination and morphologies)! Thanks for watching and for your interesting comments, much appreciated! Enjoy your weekend ahead and wishing you happy growing of course!!

    Great video Joe with plenty of useful information on growing Golden Barrels. 👍🏼 I am surprised that with the age of your Golden Barrels, they have not flowered yet. I see many in my location (bigger in size) that are in flower and I doubt that they are as old as yours. Otherwise, there will be a steep price tag on them. Now it makes me think that probably, it is a combination of age, size and lots of sunlight that will make these flower. Certainly not one factor is enough. Thank you so much for this enlightening video, Joe! 🙂🌵

    Hi Joe, thank you for this channel. Cacti vids are so hard to find. I have not had much luck growing my 2 grapefruit sized Grusonii as they burn very very easily even for brief periods in full Texas sun (3 or 4 hours) 100F + degree heat but I'm afraid less light will cause stretching. My property is quite challenging as there is no happy medium, it's either full sun all day or dappled shade in the morning/full shade the rest of the day or under a tree where all the birds hangout, lol. Welcome to white splats on my cacti, lol 🤣. I moved them to where they get dappled light in the morning and full shade the rest of the day. Welcome to skinny Grusonii. So, do you think my 50% white shade cloth will be enough to stop them from burning further in full sun all day? Or do you think I need 70% or 80%?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  2 года назад

      @SolarWinds AuroraBorealis hi there, welcome to my channel! Many thanks indeed for watching and for your great comments and feedback!
      Also, a great question - wow, looks like you have the proverbial choice between a rock and a hard place there, with where to best grow your grusoniis, LOL. I would indeed try to slowly get them used to the full sun spot, perhaps in two stages - first of all get them used to the much higher TEMPERATURES there (so initially, for a couple of weeks perhaps behind pretty strong shading, say 80% or higher).
      And then, as a phase 2 of resettling, getting them slowly used to the full SUN, i.e. much higher UV light. You could then use the 50% shade cloth for that. Btw, I use green shade netting/cloth and find that is more effective than the white one for my plants, but that might just be me.
      All that time, try to keep that new growing location as well aerated/breezy as possible, avoid stagnant HOT air - soil/earth/gras, or wooden planks as flooring below the cacti always better/cooler than concrete slabs, bricks etc which heat up considerably more! Hope the move goes well, best of luck!
      Hope you are having a wonderful day, best wishes and happy growing - cheers, Joe!!🌵🌵🌵🌸😍
