Clear Gesso for Oil Pastel and Other Mediums? | surface comparison

      No, I haven't tried this. I'm not sure if it'll stick well on the oily surface? I do think that there are oil pastel sealants out there, not sure if they are meant as a surface for additional layers though. I hope you'll find a solution that works for you!

    BIG QUESTION ANYBODY: I do graphite portraits and sometimes a day or two later after I think my drawing is finished, I'll suddenly see a mistake that needs fixing and that is easy to do with graphite. Question: In dry brushing .... after the paint is dry, can I still erase and/or darken an area that needs it. Thanks for any help.

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper 4 месяца назад

      I found that yes, that's possible. Darkening shouldn't be a problem at all. Erasing back to white is limited to rather light areas regardless of whether the paint was freshly applied or not. Medium and dark areas will only lighten to an extent. I once tested erasing a rather light area on a piece that was already several years old at the time, and found no problem with it. Now this could depend on both paper and paint (consistency), so maybe just try it out...? If you decide to give it a go, good luck and have fun! :)

      I posted the answer already on the other video you asked on, but here it is again for everyone: Ah yes, very good question! I tested it on drawings that were already several years old and could erase the light areas. The dark areas are tricky even when the paint is fresh though, there's not much to be done other than scraping with a scalpel or so. Going darker is always possible. Erasability might depend on the type of paint and paper used and whether additional oil was added, so you might want to do a test before jumping in with a detailed artwork, but from my experience this should work. Hope this helps. Happy dry brush painting!

I haven't tried the angular ones for dry brushing, but I assume they might be too floppy when using just the small long tip...? It's just a guess. You could try it out if you have one lying around, but if you have a Filbert, I suggest starting there. :)

    You can use sandpaper after the Gesso dries, to smooth the surface as much as you like! If you want texture to for pastels etc, then a the brush type and the technique when using it, will determine the tooth grit. As I said, you can always smooth it out, as much as you like! For smooth surfaces for drawing with pencils, colored pencils, I Suggest Finnabair Art Basics Clear Gesso, or Winsor And Newton Clear Gesso. If applied properly, you might not even need to smooth it out at all!, except if you want a very smooth surface ,to use pens on it!!

      @@oilonpaper I made this comment especially for people who're using Polychromos. The first thing they ask, is what paper works with Polychromos, because they realize, it's a hard and slow medium but of super quality, so they always search for a paper that can work. Clear Gesso is the answer! It takes any drawing paper, to a new level, where the medium from slow to apply, becomes super fast, the smudging to create effects depth etc, is way easier and looks better, and the COLORS, Look so much better!! (That's another issue with Polychromos,that the clear Gesso, fixes, the colors where a bit duller, because of the hard lead.).It can make drawings, look ,lively like Oil paints on Canvas!! PS 1000 grit sandpaper, is another choice, that will work for those who need even more detail. For Landscapes though, Clear gesso is the answer!

      Hi! I have used different oil color brands, which all worked well, so I think you'll probably be fine with whatever is available to you. I usually use water-mixable oil paint for easier clean-up, the Winsor&Newton Artisan line. As far as brushes, I don't have a particular brand. Important is that the bristles are relatively stiff, but smooth at the same time, meaning the brush has good snap/springback and stays in shape, but feels soft. For larger brushes the snap isn't as important, and I use make-up brushes (blush/powder brushes) because they are much cheaper than art paint brushes of the same size. Hope this helps! :)

    Thank you for your reply. Your work is amazing, too bad I can't share mine with you. I have never done dry brush work before, so it will be my first time once I get around to it.

      Hi! It's oil paint. I've used both traditional and water-soluble oil paint for this technique, and both work great. Acrylics, I assume, would dry too fast to get the same smooth effect. Hope this helps! Happy dry-brushing! :)

      @@oilonpaper Which would you prefer I start with as a beginner for dry brushing. Water or oil?

      @@thespearodiver If you don't already happen to have oil paint and need to buy it, I'd suggest water-mixable oil paint as it makes the cleaning process just this tiny bit easier. Since you only use very thin layers and never get a really oily brush, you only need water and soap to clean it (which for oilier brushes still works for water-mixable oil paint, but for the traditional oil paint, you'd then need a solvent to clean).

      @@oilonpaper Wow, thank you very much Steffi, this was not only quite a pleasant surprise yet extremely helpful. People are so mixed up within themselves and their own little worlds that they forget about others. Speaking of which, late last night I assisted three young ladies stuck behind a Locked fence. At dusk the park ranger locks the fence and they couldn't find a way out so I gave them directions on where to go to, but as they left I just sat there in my Jeep pondering over the situation with a heavy heart to be more helpful. So I drove down the hill along the fence line where I told them to go, got out w/ a blanket has a bear of protection while climbing over the fence, but fortunately we didn't need it. I did, however, help them as they climbed over and I took their hand and kindly guided each one of them down. One of the women was sweet, she prayed for me. I got back to my Jeep and wouldn't you know it, my door was locked and my keys were in the ignition, talk about bad luck or was it God playing his jokes with me. I found a stranger's house across the street two doors down and explained my plight. The woman assisted me with a flimsy hanger stretched out and unraveled. As I waited I noticed a rod and her garden about the diameter of the standard pencil. I figured that would be a nice tool to tape the hanger to as to keep it rigid instead of wobbly. With her flashlight in hand as well, I was able to go back over to the car and with Gods Grace and mercy, I hooked my keys after the third try and it worked perfectly. There are still many kind people in the world aside for myself and now I must gratefully acknowledge your kindness too. Thank you once again and God bless you!

      @@thespearodiver It was very kind of you to help the best way you could. And very kind of the lady to help with the locked door. I do believe the little things make a difference. Thank you for the reminder that kindness matters. :)

    I felt good. But the finishings are not better. The cold pressed paper isn't giving the smooth effect with the lamp black oil paint as drawn by the artist Igor Kazarine. I too have the cold pressed paper and the oil paint. But it's not working. What to do????

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper 2 года назад

      Hm, I guess you need to experiment a bit more. On his website, Igor Kazarin states that you can mix the oil paint with a drop of oil (sewing machine oil). Other people who use the technique say it's better to oil out the paint by applying it on a piece of paper (paper towel, toilet paper). The oil gets absorbed by the paper and you can use the paint for dry brushing. I'd do some experiments with that on scrap pieces of paper and see what works for you. Good luck!

    as the caran d ache boxes all look pretty much the same you can use the stickers to mark the box with what is in it. E.g. I have Neocolor 1 and 2 and I used the stickers to see which one is in which box

    I'm a 69 year old gramma that has started her own art journey a bit later than you... several months ago I began to watercolor after watching videos for quite a while. Your caption caught my eye and watched. You're very creative! It was as if you read my mind... taking a few weeks off is like starting over for me. Please continue to share your gift!!! You never know how much you can encourage someone - thank you!❤ God bless you, from a California Gramma ❤

    Hi i think the stickers are for the box because the crayons or tube gouaches are also in the same box, or very similar. If you have a box of pan gouache, a box of tube gouache and some crayons, you will find this necessary.
