  • I drew this dry-brush portrait from a passport photo as my reference. I talk about challenging myself in art, without posing too much of a challenge, about tracing and free-hand drawing.

I took a big challenge on 2 years ago. An old black & white photo (poor quality) of my mothers old dog that died many years before I was born so I've never seen the dog and secretly, without my mother knowing I did a soft pastel painting in colour, just over A4 size because she never owned a colour picture of him and pulled it off. Gave it to her for her birthday. She almost cried and said it looks just like him. Having a day job, it took me 3 months to paint. It's great to challenge your self now and then to boots your confidence.

This is my challenge exactly. I have very small, very blurry photos of my grandparents and us as children, and I would like to do a portrait of us all. I know what they looked like, so I’m trying to fill in details from memory. Funny, but it’s myself as a child I’m having the most trouble with, not my brothers or grandparents.! Makes sense, I guess. Would love more advice on this. I want to do other deceased family as well, and we have famously bad family photos!

Oh, best of luck with your project! The photo from the video was my first go at this type of endeavor, but I am sure lots of people would like to turn old/blurry/small photos into artwork. I will probably try again in the future at some point. Hmm... I do wonder now if people share tips about this online, I haven't really searched for such advice. Good thought! And thanks for leaving the comment. :)
