  • In this video, I unbox and swatch the Caran d'Ache Gouache Studio set of 15 colors in pan form (incl. white in a tube). Also-driven by curiosity-I compared the white from this student-quality set with the Horadam gouache titanium white by Schmincke, which is finest artist quality.
    The paper I use for swatching is a mix media paper by Canson.
    Hope you find it helpful!

    Also instead of using titanium (permanent) white you should use zinc white for mixing. Titanium/permanent is more opaque for highlights and layering

    Hi i think the stickers are for the box because the crayons or tube gouaches are also in the same box, or very similar. If you have a box of pan gouache, a box of tube gouache and some crayons, you will find this necessary.

    About the stickers: All of Caran d'Ache tins are red and do not have text printed on them about have the products that are inside. The stickers are intended to identify the content. They are helpful especially if you have many red tins filled with Caran d'Ache products :-)

    It sounds to me like you have a bit of a German accent, would I be correct?
    Btw, thank you for sharing those fantastic ideas and supplies that you use. Cold pressed paper and your stencils, such great ideas.

    Thank you for the review. I'm interested in the Caran d'arch pan gouache for plein air.
    I had read that zinc white was better than titanium white for mixing. Maybe the Caran d'arch is more of a zinc white.
    I enjoyed the review. Again, thank you.

      Thanks for your comment. :) I couldn't find any information on the exact pigment they use, but it's called "Deckweiß" (opaque white) rather than mixing white. That's all I have. :) Have fun painting outside! :)

    The white is a mixing white, rather than a permanent fully opaque white.

      I agree she should have put a zinc white instead which is meant for mixing. Titanium aka permanent white is too opaque and is for highlights and layering

    I got this colours for school and always wondered why my watercolours reacts so different to those of the other students. Just a view months ago I recognized that they are gouache not watercolours: the shop lady made a big mistake and my arts teachers never told me that I was working with a different medium. All the hate for water colour painting was thanks this unpleasend experience. All in all they are okay - watercolour like but much darker and don't mix as nice and pastellic.
    I still don't know what to think about them.

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper  3 года назад +1

      Oh, sounds like you much prefer how watercolors behave over gouache. The strength of watercolor lies in its translucency and the mixing effects you can get with them, for sure. I hope you'll be able to try out "real" watercolor in the future! But maybe look up gouache painting on RUclips, there might be some inspiration to get for now. :)

      @@brigitteerhardt8006 Oh, I get it! Yes, if you use gouache with lots of water, I don't find it that pretty either. 😅 Its strength definitely lies in its opacity.

      If you were being taught watercolour techniques but had this set it would have been very tiresome. Using gouache techniques would have been less offputting. Try using them with the right technique and they might surprise you.

    as the caran d ache boxes all look pretty much the same you can use the stickers to mark the box with what is in it. E.g. I have Neocolor 1 and 2 and I used the stickers to see which one is in which box

    I honestly have no idea what to do with these paints. I don't want to use them like watercolour paints because I have plenty of them and they are not really like other gouache paints so I'm stuck 🤷‍♀️

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper  3 года назад +2

      Not like other gouache paints meaning not as opaque/not as streak-free? I'm just guessing. I still haven't tried any other gouache even though I have a brand-new set of Winsor & Newton to be broken in. 😅
      But I like the Caran d'Ache for mindless doodling. I find that so relaxing. And because they come in the cakes, there's no tube squeezing, just all easy and fun. Maybe as an inspiration for you...? Just mindless doodling? Guilt-free? No pressure to create beautiful art. Just painting circles and wavy lines. Maybe you'll enjoy that.

      I have these paints as my first gouache set and my initial impression of it is that it's disappointingly transparent. I thought that it was just this set but turns out other gouache brands can be transparent as well (except for colours that already contain white in them). The colours straight out of the pan are pretty dark and pigmented so I usually add a bit of white and they become way more creamy & I also find that prewetting them with a lot of water + mixing the transparent colours with the opaque ones (brown, grey, ochre, black) seems to make the paint behave much more like normal tube gouache. It requires a bit more effort but still really fun to work with. I mainly use this set for doodles, painting thumbnail sketches for bigger paintings or when I simply feel too lazy to use my tube paints. The white tube paint when dried up is still surprisingly creamy when rewetted and it doesn't crumble like my winsor and newton gouache so they do have their pros and cons.

      Watercolor effects are so beautiful! So yes, if you love watercolor and know how to use it well and don't miss anything, gouache is not the step to take. That's great!
      Besides, if you already have watercolor, all you need is a tube of white gouache to use with your watercolor to turn them into gouache-like colors to see if you like the effect at all. No need to buy a whole gouache set to get the feel for this medium.
      Happy watercoloring! 😊

      @@oldmalayawatercolor849 Well, as I wrote before, if you don't want to commit to buying a set, but you're still curious, go for a good quality tube of white gouache to mix with your watercolor paints to make them opaque. :)
