When I was 4, I had a best friend who lived down the street. She had one of those big, cheap tins with lots of watercolors (1950’s). We would go to her room and mix those paints for hours. Every time we had some weird gray mixture, we would intone, “Ah, the final touch!” and mix a bunch of some new color in. We never actually painted, but just spent hours mixing colors, which fascinated our 4-year-old selves. That’s how I learned how to mix colors.
Yes, please do the direct comparison! I have tubes of W&N gouache, but haven’t had the courage to dive in to gouache painting yet (one reason I love watching your videos!). I do have Schmincke pan watercolors, which are amazingly pigment dense. I would love to see your W&N vs. Schmincke gouache comparison 😁
Delft is a city in Holland famous for its (Delft) blue and white pottery. Also the where Vermeer worked and is buried. Worth a visit! Schminke are my favourite gouache.
Oh definitely yes please I want to see the Windsor Newton in schminke side by side. Not that I can afford the other at the moment but I would love to find out what I'm working toward!
I would love to see more comparisons. Your painting turned out so beautiful! I love the color choices. I so look forward to each of your videos. I haven't had my gouache or watercolors out in a while, this was just the inspiration I needed! Thank you, again, Sarah for sharing and taking us all away from the problems of life and entering a place of soothing peace. ♥
Yes a direct comparison would be great! I love the winsor and newton gouache and Schmincke is my favorite watercolor but same as you haven’t tried the Schmincke gouache yet. Great video!
Oh, I can absolutely relate to the feeling of getting new colours and just LOVING them, it's the best! As much as I love creating polished finished work, I also just absolutely adore colour mixing and seeing what happens, it's the most fun and just makes me so happy... It doesn't remind me of a date (I've never really dated much) so much as when I was a kid in the 90s getting a new playset for xmas, like a Lego castle or a Little Pet Shop and taking them out of the packaging and starting to make up stories about them.... that's a lot what getting new colours feels like. 🤩 This palette absolutely suits your style and I can see why'd you be in love with it so fast! Gosh those neutrals are so pleasant!!
I love to do swatches and mixing with new brands and colors, It's like an eat a delicious strawberrie pie! 😅 Uulala! This colors are soooo gorgeous!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I love your comparison of mixing colours for the first time to a first date.. so true lol.. would LOVE the Windsor & Newton comparison to the schminke.. great idea!
I have Titanium Gold Ochre, English Red, and Helio Turquoise in the Schmincke watercolor. They look identical, but of course it's hard to tell. Would love to see the watercolor and gouache side by side! Delft Blue is PB 60, also known as Indanthrone blue (or Anthraquinone in M. Graham as you mentioned). Delft and Titanium Gold Ochre/Venetian Red are nice complimentary mixers!
Oooh yes for the direct comparison!!! Thank you for the video! These colors are so nice. I also have Schmincke's delft blue although it's in watercolor, and it's one of my absolute favorites 🤩
I definitely want to see a video of both sets of guaches used together. As for replicating your current W&N colors in the Schminke for comparison, I personally would be more interested in something like a set that rounds out the Schminke ones you have to something like a set of warm/cool set of primaries that fit your style, plus maybe 2 more. Perhaps a maximum of about eight would really illustrate how much you (that is to say one) can do with that limited set in a good brand.
Beautiful! I've been thinking about the idea of being inspired by the colours on your palette lately. I've avoided my watercolours for a long time. I told myself that it was because I hadn't learned how to use them yet, but then I randomly bought a hot pink and suddenly fell in love with just playing. A few more "just cuz they're pretty" colours later and I'm playing with my watercoulours all the time and realizing that I hate the "recommended" palette I've been avoiding for nearly 5 years. I think you need a balance of colours you love and useful colours, but I'm having so much more fun with watercolours now that I'm starting with fun colours and slowly (very slowly) figuring out what colours I can add to get a good mix of colours for the type of paintings I'm currently enjoying. Speaking of gorgeous colours, that helio turquoise is on my wish list! And, yes, please do the direct comparison!
I have metal Schmincke watercolor palette and I just love it. Their pigments are so strong and brilliant. After seeing your test with the gouache, I think I must get some, too! They lovely. I'd like to see a matching test with other gouache, like Windsor Newton.
It would be terrific to see a comparison with the W & N, especially in the same colours. I am totally committed to W & N in my current palette, and other brands are dearer here in Australia so it would be great to be informed about the differences before splashing out on another brand. Happy Painting! Amanda
Wow some of those colors were drop dead gorgeous. I keep wanting to buy Shminke watercolor but these gouaches look amazing!...yes I think buying more for comparison would be awesome! That other and blue though!!! 😍😍😍
The good and the bad of Schmincke, They make wonderful products! They cost a LOT! High quality is expensive, that is just the way it is. Since this is from 2 years ago I assume you did buy more and decided that you would spend your money elsewhere? I am struggling with even the question do I need to go back down that rabbit hole ? Do I need any gouache paints at all?? I have plenty of watercolors and I am trying to get all of them into working palettes. I know that some like to work from tubes, but I just prefer to let them dry out! This is another question for the use of gouache. I learned to use paint from tubes, do I really want to learn how to again? Or paint gouache from dried pans? Gahhh! I should just go to bed! Thanks for sharing and leaving this video for all of us to watch. I will need to look for a follow-up video? G'Night Sarah.
oohhh, I like these! I have to dig out my Schminckes again and have some happy playing time. Thank you very much for your videos, they always inspire me!
Yes please to the comparison between Winsor & Newton and Schminke! I've just recently begun my journey into gouache and have some tubes of W&N. I would love the help deciding whether to invest further in them or try the Schminke!
I definitely could tell you were more excited for these paints after you got going than the Shinhan. As I am thinking of getting more gouache than just white, I would love to see comparison videos. Currently the Schmincke looks like what I am looking for though!
I have already invested a good bit in WN gouache, so won’t likely be buying any other high-end brand right now. But when I’m ready, I def want to try Schmincke gouache. Steve on The Mind of Watercolor rated it his number 1, not bc of performance or quality (compared to WN) but bc they have a bigger color range with more high lightfastness colors. 😊
Rewatching in 2024 as I am adding to my Schmincke Horadam collection. Its always a pleasure to see you swatch. I got the Helios Turquoise ❤ (BTW Helios is Sun in ancient Greek) so beautiful for skies! Your neutral mixes are fantastic. A good team nder that we can do quite a lot with a handful of carefully picked colours. Thanks! @SarahBurnsStudio
Stunningly beautiful colors, Sarah! I would definitely be interested in seeing a comparison video between Schmincke and Winsor and Newton at some point. Have fun painting!
Great review. The colours really do work well for the Scottish landscape. I would love to see a direct comparison with your Winsor and Newton gouaches and I'm looking forward to when you use the Schmincke and ShinHan colours together. I think they will make a spectacular palette :)
Great results in your trials intreguing how so different albeit small points Sarah, enjoyed both inspirational videos. Thanks greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
You pronounced that "Delft" completely right, at least from a German standpoint 🥰 Though, the Dutches might disagree 😅 I got that Delft Blue on my watercolour palette, too, just like at least 4 or 5 other ones and I love them all, I just need to find the the time to actually use them and try them out some more. Love the colours themselves and all the mixes. They look awesome❣
That color pallette is impeccable! Gorgeous color blends! Looking back on how many "thrifty" choices I have made over the years in my supplies, you just demonstrated effortlessly how more expensive paints make your job so much more fun in creating what is in your mind's eye. Thanks for that demo, and off to the Blick catalog! 😉
Good paints don't have to be expensive though...I just ordered these to be able to compare to my "cheaper" brands like W&N, which are also really good!
FLOKi is absolutely soooooo beautiful🐾 I loved this palette Sarah I only do watercolours Windsor and Newton for years but I love watching all other mediums too loved the painting and happy for you because you love the colours yes a comparison vid would be great thanks for sharing Sarah 💜
Is it okay to say I am happy to see that? Because the same always happens to me and it made me feel like a hopeless case. So thank you for showing little imperfections.
Yes, please! I would love to see a video comparing the W&N and Schmincke in that limited landscape palette you did earlier, with five colours plus white ( I am thinking about the one with a turquoise, a preussian blue, a cadmium free yellow, a perylene green and a red i sadly have forgotten the name on..but of course as it is your palette you know what I mean ;-) ).
I'm getting that yellow. I too am in love! 🤣😂 You sound like me when I try new colours. Oooooo, Aaahhhh, OOhhhh, Mmmmm, with lots of OMG's and Wow's !!
I’ve never personally tied it (yet) but I heard that Holbein gouache is amazing. Maybe you can test a couple tubes of that in with all the others lol!!! And I absolutely love the colors that you chose! Gorgeous palette! 💕 I say it all the time but again, thank you for all your efforts…I love your videos… from the paintings and tutorials, to the wonderful views of Scotland you share with us through your wonderful videography skills!!
I used Holbein a loooooooong time ago! It was nice - very nice. But after a year or so, my tubes got really hard. Some people said this might have been due to the old design, but I'm not sure. It sucked
I love the combination of the Shinhan gouache with the Schmincke - you can mix such a wide range of beautiful colours with these! The only Schmincke gouache I have is the Delft Blue. The others are mainly Winsor & Newton, Holbein, and a few Royal Talens, Daler-Rowney and Lefranc & Bourgeois...and of course my three new Shinhan greens, which I'm in love with!
delft blue (sometimes called danish or dutch blue) was created by calcinating cobalt ore with quartz sand and potash- an extremely expensive process for artisans of the time. using paint grinding windmills, dutch artists would create the paint to decorate various porcelain vessels used for tableware. Delft Blue earthenware has been produced in the city of Delft since the 17th century. Between 1600 and 1800. Lovely color
Paused early to like for Floki 💙 Thank you so much for this! I've been curious about Schmincke gouache for some time now, but I haven't needed to replace my Holbein just yet. Our color choices would be similar (I need my cool red), so this is *super* helpful. Delft blue is Schmincke's indanthrone blue (PB60), which is one of my essentials. I would love to see comparisons between your brands and also how well it dries and reconstitutes in your new palette, if it's not too much trouble. Also, I went to Sligachan in October of 2019 and your videos/paintings from there just.. *chef's kiss.*
Sarah, lovely colours. They will definitely require you to go to Italy for a holiday so you can test them out plein air, with the lovely terracotta type mixes and interesting blue/greens. Or Mexico maybe. 👩🏽🎨🛫😎
Hi, Sarah! Thank you for the videos…such gifts to us! Just a little FYI, “Delft” blue may come from the “Delft” china/porcelain that has been so famous for decades, if not more. And it’s that color of blue & white. 😊 I hope that helps! Blessings to you! Jacqui ❤️
Gosh, these colours are delicious! I've been thinking about expanding my W&N gouache palette into other brands and you are really selling me on this plan. That Helioturquoise in particular just ... speaks to me, haha! Reminds me of the very deep cerulean watercolour I got from Mission Gold.
I just discovered you and I'm so glad I did! I also just discovered gouache and fell in love with it, I'm still learning it and your video helped me a lot, thank you! I just subscribed to your channel, I look forward to learning more from you :)
As if you need any of our prodding to get more gouache ;) LOVE your chosen palette and would LOVE to see more (of course!). Oh, and I will def be using your videos to justify MY buying some too... your swatching is gorgeous and perfect for landscapes. I just found a vintage Reeves metal paint box I am going to restore once it arrives from the UK. And "oh no!" it will require some small tubes of paint to complete it - so a set of these just might be what I am looking for. Thanks so much Sarah!
Ohh that sounds lovely! I ordered a mini handmade wooden palette that closes with magnets from Russia...been stalking the shipping like a hawk because I'm SO EXCITED
I knew you would love Horadam Gouache. I haven't tried every single brand of gouache, but the minute I tried those out, I decided not to buy anything else. It would be interesting to see what you think when you compare them to W&N.
You’ve blessed us with another video so soon! The painting was gorgeous, I loved the palette, too, but would have been intimidated not to have the ability to make a whole slew of greens! I’m the queen of convenience greens and mixed greens on top lol, can never have enough greens!
I have been told that it is better to keep gouache in the tube because it becomes extremely dried out if stored in a palette. Is that true? Wonderful colors....have a great time with them.
Some brands will crumble, others won't. My winsor and newton crumbles really bad if I leave it out on the tray. The Shinhan did too, but the Schmincke stays in a solid blob and you can easily rewet it and use it. But I prefer fresh gooey gouache so I always use a sealed palette or straight from the tube
I just got some Horadam gouache for Christmas and birthday recently as my schmincke akademie gouache supply is dwindling. I got that yellow you have and a cool yellow as well as the vermillion! Didn’t get a blue which makes things interesting. I could use an Akademie blue but decided to challenge myself. Luckily I have a ginger cat to paint!😂 Only other colours im letting myself use is W&N burnt umber and Akademie zinc white. I must say though, I’ve been painting with gouache for over a year now and am still REALLY struggling!😮💨 like literally ZERO improvement. I started with watercolours over a decade ago and after I finished school and wasn’t forced to use acrylics for art class, I’ve completely ignored opaque mediums because acrylics dry too fast, oils dry too slow (and turps gives me headaches) and I didn’t know that gouache existed😅 so wrapping my brain around opacity in paints has been a difficult journey! A fun journey though, so I don’t plan on giving up! 💪 My mom does fur textures really well with her oils, definitely going to ask her to teach me to see if her techniques can translate into gouache because truly, the fur she paints is GODLY. I want to snuggle her paintings, that’s how good she is 😂
After 10+ years of watercolor experience I got gouache from Schmincke, and love it. Delft blue (which is anthraquinone blue, btw) is very deep and has an almost petroleum opalescence. Their watercolor version is quite similar, but not that impressive. Although gouache is fun, gouache technique still breaks my brains.
I’m loving the schmincke gouache so much, except the white. And I was super surprised by the Shinhan gouache which I got at the same time. Both are permanent in my collection.
I started with Scmincke and have been filling in with W&nlN ( cheaper). I so loved the Delft blue, us there an alternate in W&N. I bought the W&N Prussian, but it's too green. Anythoughts? Nice Vid!
I really enjoyed this so much. I love that pallete too. Can you or have you used the white over a dried darker colour? And if so, how was the coverage, did it create a white high light?
The Schmincke white isn't as opaque as holbein or winsor and newton, but I rarely use a lot of pure white on top of something so haven't tested it fully
Schmincke Gouache ♡ I never bought them because they are more expensive... But I always liked Schmincke as a brand and I ordered some acrylic paints last week. Maybe one day.. I'm going to test their gouache and try to paint a lot with it as well. I really like the Schmincke products and maybe I should be more supportive and buy something since it is a local brand to me.
Yea the price is a bit...ouch! But you only need a few tubes. I ordered unique colors since I already own all the other colors in my other brands. I love the colors I chose and super happy with them!
@@SarahBurnsStudio I only would get 2 or 3 tubes first and collect what I need over. But the price really hurts if you need a complete set with all the colors you want to use. At least I made notes about what I would use a lot and I always wanted to try that titanium gold ochre. It is such a lovely warm ochre shade. I like my ochre on the warm side so this will be the perfect earth yellow for me.
These colours are definitely easier to get more toned down and natural mixes than your typical palette, which is nice if you're wanting to do more realistic and/or moody landscapes colour-wise. Are you going to use your new goauche for the paintalong this weekend 😁?
Hey sarah, do you think you could make a tutorual on how you do some of your rocks? They look so gourgeous but i just cabt seem to make my hands cooperate when i try them. Thank you for all the beautiful videos! Love you!
Did you ever do the comparison between the Schmincke Horadam gouache and the W&N? I'd love to know what you think. I recently got a set of the Schmincke and wasn't as impressed, maybe because I tend to use it with less water than you do. I love your landscapes and enjoy your videos greatly.
When I was 4, I had a best friend who lived down the street. She had one of those big, cheap tins with lots of watercolors (1950’s). We would go to her room and mix those paints for hours. You are so adorably giddy over these, I love it! ❤ great review as always. You are such an inspiration. 😀
Hi Sarah, after watching this I ordered those same colors. What a lovely palette of colors. I’m with you, love, love, love that yellow shade
Yes a direct comparison would be great! I love the winsor and newton gouache and Schmincke is my favorite watercolor but same as you haven’t tried the Schmincke gouache yet. Great video!

Oooh yes for the direct comparison!!! Thank you for the video! These colors are so nice. I also have Schmincke's delft blue although it's in watercolor, and it's one of my absolute favorites 🤩
Lovely colors!!! OMG! I know now why this gouche it's your favorite!❤ beautiful combinations, really good colors ❤❤❤

Wow some of those colors were drop dead gorgeous. I keep wanting to buy Shminke watercolor but these gouaches look amazing!...yes I think buying more for comparison would be awesome! That other and blue though!!! 😍😍😍

That was a very interesting video and a delightfull sketch to finish. Thankyou i.o.

In February 2023 the Vermeer exhibition in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam will open!
Yes! Do a comparison. Great video
Omg those colors! I was like drooling lol!
Looking forward to seeing the new palette set up ☀️ wonderful video , stunning colour choices x

You just seem to "fall" into your painting. Oh how I envy you, but I admire your talent as well. Love watching your demos!

Oh no, now I really want to try these paints. I have other gouache but will have get some schmincke as the colours look so different. 😀

Love the colors you picked. I may have to add theses to my collection next year! Thanks for sharing.

It sucked
@@SarahBurnsStudio thanks for the heads up!!
I wish I had tried Schmincke gouache sooner..then again its a bit pricey here! I need to keep my eye out for sales
I love those colors 😍. They ended up so good
yes
Love the Schmincke gouache. They made some very pretty mixes. Then Shinhan we’re nice too.
Great video! Would love to see how they compare with W&N gouache!
So pretty. I would love to see you compare to W&N. I haven’t bought good quiche yet….this would be very helpful
delft blue (sometimes called danish or dutch blue) was created by calcinating cobalt ore with quartz sand and potash- an extremely expensive process for artisans of the time. using paint grinding windmills, dutch artists would create the paint to decorate various porcelain vessels used for tableware.
Delft Blue earthenware has been produced in the city of Delft since the 17th century. Between 1600 and 1800.
Lovely color
that's fascinating!
Ohh I thought the Delft blue looked familiar, it's so similar to my anthraquinone blue (PB60) and now I know why!
@@SarahBurnsStudio Oh! I didn't know that was anthraquinone's pigment too! Nice 😁
Sarah, lovely colours. They will definitely require you to go to Italy for a holiday so you can test them out plein air, with the lovely terracotta type mixes and interesting blue/greens. Or Mexico maybe. 👩🏽🎨🛫😎
Haha I WISH!
Hi, Sarah!
Thank you for the videos…such gifts to us!
Just a little FYI, “Delft” blue may come from the “Delft” china/porcelain that has been so famous for decades, if not more. And it’s that color of blue & white. 😊
I hope that helps!
Blessings to you!
Jacqui
❤️
Gosh, these colours are delicious! I've been thinking about expanding my W&N gouache palette into other brands and you are really selling me on this plan. That Helioturquoise in particular just ... speaks to me, haha! Reminds me of the very deep cerulean watercolour I got from Mission Gold.
Yess I LOVE the helio. It became one of my favorite watercolors last year and when I saw it in gouache I smashed the ADD TO CART button
I just discovered you and I'm so glad I did! I also just discovered gouache and fell in love with it, I'm still learning it and your video helped me a lot, thank you! I just subscribed to your channel, I look forward to learning more from you :)
Welcome!!
Hi Sarah, have you tried Schmincke Akademie gouache and if you have would you recommend it?
Great video thank you!
Those colours were gorgeous! (Oh no to my bank account!) and that landscape you did was so beautiful (as always!) I love the softness of it 😍
I knew you would love Horadam Gouache. I haven't tried every single brand of gouache, but the minute I tried those out, I decided not to buy anything else. It would be interesting to see what you think when you compare them to W&N.
You work is amazing! Please show the pallet you create from these new gouaches you have. 😊
Thank you! Will do!
If you haven't yet done the comparison with the Windsor Newton, I would like to see it. Off to look for it now
Not a direct comparison, yet!
My mom does fur textures really well with her oils, definitely going to ask her to teach me to see if her techniques can translate into gouache because truly, the fur she paints is GODLY.
Schmincke Gouache ♡
I never bought them because they are more expensive...
@@Christine_R it's a GORGEOUS color. The more I use it the more I love it, even more than my yellow ochre
These colours are definitely easier to get more toned down and natural mixes than your typical palette, which is nice if you're wanting to do more realistic and/or moody landscapes colour-wise. Are you going to use your new goauche for the paintalong this weekend 😁?
I haven't decided yet!
Hey sarah, do you think you could make a tutorual on how you do some of your rocks? They look so gourgeous but i just cabt seem to make my hands cooperate when i try them. Thank you for all the beautiful videos! Love you!
I do have a video planned about this because it's a common request!
Not yet - but hopefully soon!
