- This is the second tutorial about the dry-brush technique I've made. In this video I show you how I use stencils/masks for creating sharp edges when dry brushing with oil paint on paper. I hope you find it helpful! If you have any questions, drop them down below!
Here's the link to the first tutorial I've made, in which I go over the basics:

You are a wonderful Tutor. Accent - English - forget it - even the Brits have forgotten. I am happy to see the courage in your presentation. You are 100% confident. That speaks volumes. Keep it up.
Now a days - the trend is CHARCOAL - because it offers amazing range. That is why you see a STREET FIGHT. Also you see CLASS of CLASS. It has no boundaries. Sky is the limit. I am sure youknow it. I did few Dry brush portrait & used pen for thin lines & it really works & will look smashing because you can capture details extremely well. These are opinions but I leave to the public.
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I'm sure there are lots of benefits to charcoal compared to dry brushing, but personally I don't like the scratchy feeling on the paper. 😅 Do you work in charcoal?
Oh yes! In case anyone wants to know: I used the color ivory black. Happy dry brushing everyone! 🙂
Wow, that ear looks so real. Did you just cut out that stencil you were using from any cardboard?
The two masks I use most often are cut from random plastic cards that I had lying around, they are just a bit more durable than cardboard. But I also have a paper one for smaller shapes because it was easier to cut those out of paper. Overall: open to experimentation, this is not an exact science. ;)
Oh, that turned out really nice with great contours! I also make my own masks! I use drawer liner that has a sticky side and attach it to card or computer paper. Btw, are you from the Netherlands?
For masks you can get creative with whatever you have lying around. 😊 I am not Dutch, if that's what you're asking. Do I sound Dutch?! 😅 I currently live in the Netherlands though, and I'm originally from Germany.
@@oilonpaper I'm not sure what you sound, but I wouldn't say typically German I don't think (I used to live there), but I knew you weren't American! Or English, like I am, although I live in Arizona.
@@ruthballardart I've heard this before that my accent is a bit hard to place. 😊
We can rub oil paint using normal eraser?
Yes, if the layer is thin enough! And yes, normal erasers as used for graphite can be used for this. :)
