  • Maybe you've considered trying out the dry-brush technique, but didn't know if you need to prime your paper to make the artwork last a long time ...?
    Well, other people have wondered that too, so in this video I am sharing my thoughts and experiences on this topic.
    If you want to try out dry brushing, but don't know where to start, hopefully these two videos will help!

    I FINALLY tried out acrylic & oil paper for dry-brushing, and I really liked working on it! So this might be an option if you are worried about your work not lasting. Watch here if interested: ruclips.net/video/VhoApheiXo8/видео.html

    Have you tried your dry brush technique on linen board? It may not erase but it seems that after it drys you could dry brush white to add light...what do you think?

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper  3 года назад +1

      I actually haven't, but I've seen examples of dry brush on canvas. I think the bigger difference lies in the rougher texture. Adding highlights back with white is worth a try! Good suggestion, thanks! 😊

    I wonder if putting the paint onto something like white card for 5-10mins first will help minimise the linseed oil yellowing? I've done this for making the paint look matt as the oil makes the paint shine.

      Hello Raymond! I've heard differing advice from different sources about that. Some people like to "oil out" the paint by placing it onto an absorbent surface for several hours before use and some people recommend adding extra oil to help distribute the thin paint layers even better. I have plans to test out the "extremes" to see what they do. (currently I just use oil paint without adding any extra oil)
      I do like a matt look too! I didn't think of the difference the oil could really make to the finished piece, so I'll definitely add it to the results list when I do my experiments. Thanks for the tip! 😀 And thanks for the comment! Enjoy your weekend!!

      Yeah, oops, my earlier comment needs some clarification. 😅
      Obviously less oil would be better against yellowing. The recommendation for oil was just about handling. But I'm sure anyone would have guessed that. 😅 Aaaanyway, more on that in a future video. 😊

      @@oilonpaper Ah, okay. I've never tried drybrush oils so don't know about the handling but I can imagine less oil means less smooth. Really must give them a try it looks fun.

    Can this technique be done on a gessoed canvas or paper?

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper  4 года назад

      I can't think of any reason why not! There's a dry-brush artist on YT called PortraitPainter Pabst, and I don't remember in which video exactly, but he used dry-brushing on canvas before (I'm guessing gessoed or otherwise primed). He usually uses paper though.
      The reason why gessoing the paper is not "a thing" is probably because it originated as a handy, cheap, fast technique among street artists. I haven't tried it on gessoed paper, but it's on my to-try list, for sure. :) The only thing is it probably takes the paint differently and maybe there are differences in erasing or so, but that's to be seen. :)

    Great video! What if we just use oil paper or canva paper?

    • @oilonpaper
      @oilonpaper  3 года назад +1

      Well, yes, it's so obvious, but I actually haven't tried that out for dry brushing! 😅 When I first learned about it, watercolor paper was recommended (probably because it's widely accessible and can be relatively cheap). Canvas paper might be too rough for erasing, but oil/acrylic paper sounds like it's worth a try. I actually have some, so I'll add it to my to-try list. 😊
      (actually I think it's been on there, I just forgot about it, thanks for the reminder 😅)

      oil on paper Steffi lol :) I tried it last night on canvas paper, and you are right, the texture is too rough. I tried it on gessoed paper but I need to make the gesso smoother. I’ll try it on watercolour paper next. I have hot and cold press both on hand. I don’t have any oil paper on hand, so yes, please let us know your experience with oil paper and if you recommend it, I’ll order some!
      By the way, I tried it on top of two colored pencil drawings. Both were done in Prismacolor pencils and had reached the point where no more pencil could be applied because the texture had become sort of gummy, you know? The drawings were still not feeling finished though. So I tried dry brushing with oils on them. Just a couple thin layers helped finish the drawings 😅 So now we know :)

      @@PritikaChowdhry Awesome! Thanks for letting me know! I've only tried the reverse: color pencil on top of dry brush, which works nicely. I will make more videos on dry brush surfaces, for sure. I already recorded some footage about uses of clear gesso (not good for dry brush, too gritty). Let's experiment and explore together! 😀😊
