S3 E42 The Power of Christ's Peace as Taught by Abinadi and Stephen Smoot (week of May 13)
For great additional content that will bless your life, join us at TSAR.website!
You can get help understanding the Isaiah passages in this reading by buying Kerry's book "Learning to Love Isaiah."
In this episode Kerry and Stephen discuss Abinadi's teachings. They go over the story to help us understand Abinadi and the power of his story. They then delve into the doctrine Abinadi teaches, especially how he teaches us about Christ and Christ's mission and how Christ is the Father and how He is the Son. This includes understanding something about Isaiah and how Abinadi uses Isaiah.
Kerry references an article by John Gee, as found in scholarsarchive.byu.edu/jbms/vol1/iss1/4/.
We are grateful ...

Thanks for this! As a teenager, I was taught Abinidi was burned at a stake fireside. LOL I'm grateful to have a better understanding of his death. It was great to see Stephen Smoot. I haven't seen him since he was contributing to Pearl of Great Price Central. Nice to see him looking well and advancing his education. Kerry, thanks so much for your podcasts. i really appreciate them.

I like the point you made that Limhi encourages his people through referring to God as "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," reminding them of God's covenant with Israel. Then he reminds them of the Exodus and Lehi's journey. It occurred to me that by bringing up both these events Limhi was bringing two witnesses of God's commitment and power to deliver. He's not just saying nice things to his people; he's giving them something very strong to hold on to.

Since they were successful in defeating the Lamanites when they turned to the Lord for help, I wonder if they could have lived there successfully if Zeniff had chosen someone other than Noah to succeed him. On the other hand the Lamanites were not likely to give up the desire to bring them into bondage. Just a wondering.

I did what you guys teach and looked up “teasing” in the 1828 Websters Dictionary. It defined it as “vexing with importunity“ Importunity: Pressing solicitation; urgent request; application for a claim or favor, which is urged with troublesome frequency or pertinacity. Makes sense!!!

How humble Ammon was. That was enlightening; the fact Ammon is a Jew, a descendant of Zarahemla (Mulekites). Mulekites are Jews. They are brothers of the Nephites who are descendants of Joseph who was sold into Egypt.💗💗💗👍👍

Thank you for addressing Ammon being a Mulekite. I have thought about this quite often over the years and came to much the same conclusion you spoke of; that it was due to the integration the Nephite Kings were able to bring about that Ammon was the leader. This was the first time that I have heard anyone speak about it. I must say that it sure is fun when the conclusions I reach on my own are supported by scholarly minds.

I’ve pondered what good came from Zeniff being drawn to go to the land of Lehi-Nephi and I think we can’t overlook the importance of finding the Jaradite record. Did they have to suffer and have all the bad stuff happen? Of course not. But God was moving them to find the plates and I think that is part of the reason Zeniff was so drawn to go. I also think it’s interesting that it was descendants of Mulek who wanted to go to Lehi-Nephi. They hadn’t ever lived there! It’s clear they didn’t even know the way to get there, because both groups get lost, and they don’t know how to get back. Why would these people want to go? Did they hear the stories of Nephi and really want to see the place he lived and the temple that he had built? Did they think that the Lamanites couldn’t be that bad because they hadn’t really had much interaction with them? There are no answers, but it fascinating to ponder.

Don't miss Mosiah 17:8. It matches Mosiah 7:27-28, in that they killed Abinadi because he said God will come down among men. Probably claimed this was blasphemy, and thus grounds for death. Also, interesting that they reject the condescension of God, which is so central to Nephi's great vision.

In following the theme of everyone isn’t all good or all bad, I have a different take on Zeniff & King Laman. What if we see Zeniff’s comments that King Laman was crafty & had planned to trap them all along as comments from someone who is rewriting history a bit with the new biases that come with time? It doesn’t make sense to me that King Laman would wait 12 yrs to enact his dastardly plan. Lose one battle and then wait another 22 years before trying again. It makes more sense that he is originally generous. He shares the land with the intention of living alongside the Nephites, but much like the later citizens of IL, gets worried at their numbers & strength. Possibly he sees that they’ll want more land or maybe there are some Nephite incursions. Idk that we can fully trust Zeniff’s descriptions bc he’s embroiled in war & regret & it’s easy to fall back on old biases.

I'm really just impressed by this whole narrative. A 'branch' goes to check on their previous homeland, are 'cut off' from the main group, get tricked into establishing a community so they can be taxed, they have a mini apostasy and cleansing (baptism) of the people, find an ancient record of another group who had broken off and made covenants with God, are led back to their people (grafted in) which makes the main group stronger by providing them someone who is called to establish the church throughout the land. This "side quest" has a major effect on the rest of the history of the people and the book which is later compiled by Mormon. I know that I'm not seeing everything in this but it's incredible to look at it from the 30,000' view.

The reason Zeniff is "overzealous" to return to the land of Nephi is because he is heartbroken. He CANNOT stay in Zarahemla. He feels terrible remorse for all of the deaths connected to his time as a spy for the Nephite army. He CANNOT face the many widows, fatherless children, etc. He is emotionally and probably psychologically scarred by his role in so many deaths. He cannot remain in Zarahemla and face those mourning people day after day and year after year. He cannot stay in Zarahemla. He has not leave and live somewhere else. It is natural for him to choose the land of Nephi and be "overzealous" to go there to live with hopefully some peace of mind and heart.

A great lot of comments this week, you guys are great to get in there and fellowship with us. This is my favourite post for that reason. You stimulated lots of thoughts for me this week, is Zenith a Nephite who descends from Ephraim? Does Ammon descend from Mulek who descends from Judah? Allergy of the Olive Tree gathering of Israel? Covenant blessings of Joseph and Judah through Jacob, Israel in play here? People who gather to and populate America have the God given charge to make Christ their king and then like Ammon are invited to go out and help the nations of the earth course correct by eliminating false traditions to follow the Lord through a covenant keeping relationship with Jesus Christ? The power that righteous Americans have with Prophets Seers in the land. Loved your comments of the value they are to all the people of the earth. Americans could be called immigrants from other lands but with a great opportunity to bless the world, just like you are doing. You have a blessing from the Lord your invitation to share learning is to multiply that God given talent. Thank you

Thank you Kerry I am an ideas person, you will have a deeper understanding of the ideas. What I did come away with was a value of righteous humour, Lamar was really funny about great stuff. President Nelson at the Women’s Birthday Devotional blessed the women of the church not only to change lives but to change the world. I made the Lord’s invitation for you who live in America to have Him as your King sound easy, it can be with faith in the Lord, personal conversion to covenant relationship with the Lord, become the instrument He will lead us to become as we strive to let Him prevail. For me it is a community effort, so very grateful for all who inspire, teach and challenge me, Prophets, family, faith community, serving in the world as the Lord directs, the Lord can do miraculous things. What I appreciate with what you are doing with the variety of people you have on, you are very good at keeping it real, I always feel safe, you allow for personal educated speculation but you are doctrinally sound and keep it real. Most people shut me down because my ideas overwhelm them but you get what I am trying to explore thank you.

I also appreciated the comment back to Jacob when he said look at the Lamanites- they're treating their families way better.

Thank you for your comment! It's great to really get into the scriptures and see through the eyes of these historic men and women. They have much to teach us and I hope what we help bring that to life. Thanks so much for watching!

I love what this podcast adds to all the others I study the Book of Mormon with. Gives me a sense of attending religion class at BYU and a sense of community since I am in the Primary each week. (Which I love by the way!)

I saw the trip of those looking for the lost Nephites in Lehi-Nephi as a metaphor for the leaders of the church seeking the lost. There were 16. The typical number of apostles in the church is 12 + 3 = 15 apostles. In this case, the leader Ammon, plays the role of Christ. His name even means God in Egyptian.

The Lord is over all His creation. At His voice everything obeys, if He knows how to govern the universe He knows how to help everyone. Thinking of what king Benjamin teaches of the Lord and who He is, strengthens my hope and trust that He can sort me.

AMAZING teachings in this lesson! I have read the scriptures for this week's Come Follow Me and as I came with my insights, I have been blown away by the two of you! I started this video yesterday, and now this morning I have made it to minute 11!!! I have Dr. Mulhestein's book, God Will Prevail, which is brilliant, and this morning I was led to go to Chapter 8, True Covenant Keeping and the Transformative Power of Christ. It is so perfect with our study this week and your teachings. Thank you SO much for helping me dive in deeply. Blessings, my brothers ❤

I am an "all is not well in Zion" Mormon but I did appreciate this discussion. And learned about Jacob 5. I agree Israel and its Zion is coming, ready or not. I disagree with one of the first things said however. The scriptures over and over and over and again some more verify that Jesus was the SON of the Old Testament Jehovah. It cannot be more clear. There is no Old Testament Father of Jehovah. An example: is in John 8:54 where Jesus point blank claims his Father is the God of the Jews. That means his Father is Jehovah. What confuses people is that the resurrected Jesus is the Jehovah for this earth. And speaks as Jehovah. So there are two Jehovahs in scripture. The doctrine of "Elohim" being the Father of Jehovah is not in any scripture. That is only a Temple doctrine. And Brigham, who prepared the endowment ceremony as directed by Joseph, taught that Michael and Jehovah were resurrected Beings in the creation. And Elohim is the Grandfather God. So the creation Jehovah is not Jesus. More about this: 2bc.info/pdf/Exposed.pdfSo the creation Jehovah is not Jesus. And Elohim

The transformative moment in my life was, being baptised and receiving the glorious gift of the Holy Ghost, feeling the increased light that comes through the Holy Ghost. I have been taught that the Holy Ghost is always giving a constant flow of revelation we just need to be tuned in to receive, when I am it is transformative. It doesn’t come as a great pillar of light for me, but ray by ray as Elder Alexander Dushku spoke about in his April Conference talk Pillars and Rays.

I think Dr. Taggart just summed up the entire law of consecration and the building up of Zion in one sentence. That, in order to build that new kingdom: we need to judge what is needed and not what is deserved.

I found the quote in her book "Cat's Cradle" the last bit (listened on audiobook.) I transcribed a bit more for a lesson: Chieko Okazaki, Cat’s Cradle, “...But something is missing from our spiritual lives if we never see a need ourselves and meet it. When we look into the eyes of someone who’s suffering we are alleviating, when we touch their hands and speak to them ourselves, not through intermediaries, then we claim the great promise of the Savior with a power and a directness not available if there is distance, ‘Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren [and sisters], ye have done it unto me.’ "....One of the greatest privileges and opportunities of mortality lies in our ability to serve others….I think some forms of service are experiences that we can have only in mortality No one is hungry in the next life, so if we want to share food with those who weep from hunger, we must do it in this life. No one is cold or naked. If we want to give a pair of shoes to a barefoot child, we must do it in this life. We know that the wicked suffer remorse, but there is no indication in the scriptures that there is grief or loneliness or sorrow among those in paradise, so if we want to give comfort and encouragement we must do it in mortality. "This is our day. This is our chance. Let’s take it…. We have the power to make our path the Savior’s path. We can be His hands to do good, His feet to run swiftly on errands of mercy, His love to heal and bless others."
