You can get help understanding the Isaiah passages in this reading by buying Kerry's book "Learning to Love Isaiah."
In this episode Kerry and Stephen discuss Abinadi's teachings. They go over the story to help us understand Abinadi and the power of his story. They then delve into the doctrine Abinadi teaches, especially how he teaches us about Christ and Christ's mission and how Christ is the Father and how He is the Son. This includes understanding something about Isaiah and how Abinadi uses Isaiah.
Kerry references an article by John Gee, as found in scholarsarchive.byu.edu/jbms/....

Thanks for this! As a teenager, I was taught Abinidi was burned at a stake fireside. LOL I'm grateful to have a better understanding of his death. It was great to see Stephen Smoot. I haven't seen him since he was contributing to Pearl of Great Price Central. Nice to see him looking well and advancing his education. Kerry, thanks so much for your podcasts. i really appreciate them.

As you talked about the “seed” of those who share & nurture testimony, my memory went through a panorama of the nursery & primary children I taught through the years (and of the teachers who taught my little ones), and wow, the feelings I have when I see those kids all growing up: making covenants, doing great things in their lives… it’s exactly the feeling I experience when I see my own children: not a feeling of “Wow, look what I did”, but “Wow, what a gift to have played a tiny role (even as a witness) in God’s work in & through these children!”
Our family celebrated the weddings of our oldest children last year and, wow: being able to invite and celebrate with the MANY people who have been like moms, dads, grandparents or older siblings to these kids… it’s hard to describe, but so rich, getting a glimpse of how many people are “laboring in the vineyard”, so to speak, as a child grows-or a convert or a re-convert of any age.

I met Stephen in Provo c. 2008 at a small gathering of nerds from a LDS discussion board. He was just a teenager then. So fun to see this!

Really enjoyed hearing Steven’s points. Like the back and forth around Isaiah 52. I need to re-read and study that more deeply. Thank you!

Thank you both for your awesome discussion. Loved the thoughts about Christ and His role as our Father, as the Lord progresses in His becoming like His Father, He needs no Mediator like us. Loved your honouring of Abinadi, he does stand so spotless before the Devil and his hold on the hearts of Abinadi’s audience. The teachings of Abinadi for me mirror the Condescension of Christ, these are the dependents of Lehi and Sarah. I see this as a battle between the Lord and Satan for this chosen people the Nephites to repent it begins with some hope and out of it comes Alma and all the hope his work brings. The Lord here is the Victor, Abinadi dies but he has as you said some seed in the righteous that are preserved. Thank you loved the things you taught.

It can get confusing with the references to the Father and the Son. I had reconciled it, so much like John 17, but this was so well done. Loved it!

I also think this topic is sometimes confusing for some readers. I am thrilled to hear that you felt it was helpful on such an important topic.

I think of it as - when I'm baptized I die and am reborn with Christ as the father of my new life.
