Yes, but although I agree with his portrayal of the philosophers he claims have been popularized (though the Marxist critical theorists disagree with Derrida and Foucault in fundamental matters) and I share his criticism of them, and though I love Catholic social teaching, there was one thing that badly missed. In his zest to criticize the Left, he missed the obvious application of the thought he was criticizing to the MAGA right. Loving power over truth, love, justice; giving alternative realities to support their power agenda. That is pure Foucault. In the present context to focus this philosophical criticism only on the Left is dishonest or blind. So make the connection to Left and Right, and I agree with you. Catholics should stand athwart Trumpism just as strongly as Wokism. Both are terrible, but I find woke folk typically more decent in practice than the radical Right.
He's an esoteric religious man, so his reasoning is almost completely opaque to the common man. But he promises a purge, and that is the appeal to the faithful, that they will be allowed to sin in the worst way against outsiders. So no, that's why we keep church and state separate. And prior history shows us the bloody results of a priests hierarchical desire justifying his murderous desire.... so that's the only substance he transmits to his flock.

I just l listed to this presentation today, but I had heard before. Like you, I now would like to have it in written form, so I plan to reach out to his WORD on Fire Ministry for that. God bless you.
I love listening to Bp. Barron for his deep intellectual perspective that comes from his own labors and research. He is both informative and yet always provides subtle "black hat" information that I am certain he does not consider. I appreciate his words and the words that go unstated.
As someone who has sympathies on both sides of the issue I appreciate his deeper philosophical analysis then usually comes with those who use the phrase "wokism".
Just Brilliant. As someone who went to a famous left wing university , LSE , in the 70s , Ive had a ringside seat to all this. I was at university when the Marxist realised they could not bring about revolution in the sophisticated , affluent West and so emerged the influence of Gramsci and Rudi Dutschke , infiltrate the institutions at all levels and take over the capitalist state. I experienced this in my lifetime at first hand as former Marxist student colleagues rose up in education , my profession , and implemented their ideology. With hindsight they poisoned the minds of the young. I remained Catholic and opposed. As Pope Benedict said , Quote . Charity to all under the unambiguous standard of the cross. Martyrdom and persecution if need be before accommodation. Unquote.
Most inspiring and thank you for remaining true to the faith. I myself appear to have kissed my career goodbye due to a similar environment at a job where they were aggressively atheist in the name of "social progress." They said the Catholic faith was responsible for all the worst things under the sun - and expected to convince me of such. I resisted and remained true to the faith and now have no references to get a new job (I'll likely be homeless by this time next year). Please pray for me.
@@flintwestwood3596 Sorry to hear that. Things are so much worse now Im sure , becoming like a communist country that my wife lived under. Im sure things will work out for you.
I had a roommate who was a philosophy teacher. He once told me that one of his university professor described Derrida as “someone who gives bulls**t a bad name”.
A brilliant analysis that helps to clarify that the best way to accomplish what those who propose wokeism want... namely social justice is to understand the Catholic traditional teaching on Justice and Love which corrects the intellectual errors of wokeism and provides the true understanding of social change.
Dear Bishop Robert Barron: thank you for helping me understand better what "wokeism" means by explaining it through what you consider to be its philosophical pedigree, which, ironically, if I understood you well, you misrepresent in a self-serving, kind of woke way. I would also point out some "social control" aspects relating to wokeism. * my bias: by profession I am a theoretical physicist (basically a double major in Physics and Math)/tech monkey kind of guy who quite ferally loves to read and ponder about philosophical and all kinds of topics, poetry, ... (I even have thorough going "'conversations' with Aristotle" ;-) and I am obsessed with somehow proving in a measured way that the mind-body link is essentially semiological in nature). When I was a little boy I took upon myself reading all books which have ever been published after I read Saint Francis one liner (a bit cannibalized, paraphrased by me in a consciousness studies kind of way): "the greatest of all graces and gifts that God has granted us with is the capacity of overcoming oneself". I chose to keep my comments on such an important topic about "problems of the mind" which need to be addressed by priests and anyone with a sense of empathy towards out neighbors, because it became too large and they would not let me post it here: ipsoscustodes.wordpress.com/2024/08/02/philosophical-pedigree-of-wokeismq/ ~ I have a question for you: were those your own ideas or have you noticed other philosophers making such associations? Thank you, RCL^2
That’s it it’s putting words of love and justice, as the definition of the action of what Black Lives Matter does. I think actions are more important than words I think, actions to find themselves. I think when everyone was mortified as we watched a black man murdered in our living room, we all had to stand together and say no. And for you to call that Marxism, because they are not defining it with words is doing a disservice.
Well done from beginning to end. I really liked the Catholic teaching V Marxist philosophy…. exact opposites… and the reflections on power differences between Gods supreme power and Marx or the individual wanting the supreme power. From a simpleton’s point of view…. God with supreme power.. allows the Christian individual to say yes or no…. whereas the Marxist wants to be the supreme power ruler… but his followers do NOT have the freedom to choose yes or no… the individual must submit to the all powerful Marxist. The other big difference, where God teaches justice and love…. Marx teaches ‘the end justifies the means’ and hate….opposites.♥️✝️
Well done, Bishop! As I've heard, you have been appointed to represent the US Church at the Synod on synodality in Rome. May the Holy Ghost guide your steps and interventions. I hope you will voice your (orthodox) insights clearly and strongly when they attack the foundations of Catholic teaching. (Notice that I didn't write 'if ...' .)
You didn't write "if", so I'll try to state this gently. In questioning institutional racism, folks frequently get accused of attacking. And questioning is not the same as being attacked, that's a delusion common among bigots. Like when resisting arrest is the only change, you NEED to ask why was there an arrest to begin with? So while I might expect bigotry in some places, I need to practice optimism and restraint lest I be the one acting with prejudice. I hope that thought is helpful for you. Also understand that the level of intolerance from some institutions necessities a response, examples including: Catholic Orthodoxy withholding non Catholics rights as citizens or even humans.... That's impossible not to question. Don't pretend to be the victim of the people who you would oppress.
What we need is Orthodoxy instead of more Heterodoxy. I am glad that someone is teaching what I had to learn mostly on my own. Logos Rises. We need Orthodoxy to also rise with Logos. Real Theology, not philosophical or psychological assumptions and Cultural Marxism!!!

Fascinating perspective on the history of how we arrived here. Nobody ever seems to talk about where the appetite for wokism comes from. I often think that it’s fueled by the culture of disrespect from the right wing crowd.
Such talks and his comments about WYD go along ways to make amends for his language that mimicked practical universalism. Would like him to elaborate on imperfect contrition’s role in saving souls.
Do you offer accreditations for attending lectures? I chose after high school to forgo the brainwashing of college education and have been attending the videos on this channel since 2016. I would like to pursue a career now but need accreditations or certifications as proof of education. Can you sign me a counselor to guide me through the process? Thank you.
Thank you Bishop Barron. An interesting video. Take care and go gently. Having over prayed, I would quite like you to extend this topic via a series of talks and most of all with another series of topics actually showing plenty examples of "wokism." Constant examples of this modern woke concept with your explanations, could enhance a proper understanding of the term for me. Can you supply such videos explaining the concept in depth? Obviously, if you are able to, I look forward to receiving your delivery, - starting from the absolute basics. What do you think. Would that be okay with you? Amen Glory to God in the Highest level of Love forever. 😘😁😘
In my earlier correspondence, I meant to say disension of authority and not the word decision. Thanks. I hope that you understand. Regards Valerio Critelli
Skip the first 5 minutes if you want to avoid listening to "appeals to authority". I share the sympathies of the speaker concerning understanding the roots of the cancer consuming our society. However, the beginning is painful. Another point concerning "Cogito" at 9:00. If thinking is not to be the arbiter of truth, then what is?
I suspect that Barron doesn't fundamentally oppose Descartes but is saying that the self-centric idea has mutated and gone too far. And also, my interpretation is that "my thinking" is the arbiter of truth as far as I can experience (because of my flawed existence apart from God), but I recognise that Truth belongs to God. Either alternative is dangerous: My thinking as the sole arbiter of truth: leads to subjectivism, wokeism etc. God as the sole arbiter of truth (not recognising that we can only see things through the lens of our own thinking): leads to uncriticality and often a legalistic understanding of Christian doctrine, imposing one's view on others.
Comment for traction. This was a great talk/summation. Essentially James Lisday’s early work condensed in 45min. But I did enjoy james’ 3hr sessions on Hegal , Marcuse, gramche.
So this is Bishop Barron promoting the nasty Cultural Marxism Conspiracy Theory. I thought so. His argument made no sense. The first Q&A Barron says he agrees with Woke when presented with the definition of it. But otherwise wanted to say it was "cultural marxism" which is bogus. People can realize there is oppression without any connection to Marx, Marxism, or "cultural Marxism" etc.
These are such important topics in our everyday culture. Understanding the roots of wokeism is so helpful to interact with the moderns. How it all ties to the truth and compassion of our God is not always an easy transition. I don't know about everyone else, but I will listen to this podcast a few times to really get the outline of a polemic structure to fight this aggressive and dangerous philosophy. May God help us!
He is hosted by, and gives thanks to, the Acton Institute. Named after Lord Acton, who did his best to prevent Pius IX from putting the question of papal infallibility in front of the First Vatican Council. I wonder what he would say to that. One might also wonder why the Bishop makes no effort to understand how "wokeism" (a term invented by its enemies) came to be. "Not to be understood as much as to understand," the prayer of St. Francis, is not part of his belief system.
The thing is, intelligent, critical thinkers already know all of this. You can't persuade people without critical thinking skills no matter how many facts you present.
i love the Bishop! i was debateing with a friend what is love? and i said obedience to Love, and she said obedience out of LOve to the Lord :)) .......obedience to the Love is to listen to the objective truth....and not inventing your own love and then decide what to do with it...as if we are the source of love
The absolute values of justice and love are threatened today in America. EX-president Trump calls President Biden's administration WOKE. I beg the Catholics to vote for Justice and Love in November--vote for Biden- and save the battle against diversity equity and inclusion for after we save the country from autocracy. Put absolute values before secundum quid. Circumstances demand it
Woke is an indigenous term from the community of African Americans. It's origin is in the speeches of Martin Luther King where he tells people to be awake to the prejudices, 2:42 injustices, race in class separations. It is always been a term that African Americans understood well because of Martin Luther King Jr. But two white governors, Florida and Texas, decided to make fun of it and treated as a joke and something to hate. Pure racist comments. The same governors who use immigrants as pawns. The same governors who want to ban their version of the right books in public libraries.
It is entirely possible for two people to have different values yet be able to love each other. The dynamics of parents and children in any family demonstrates that! Barron is one more "tool" of Roman Catholicism.
humans really know how to complicate basically everything. When we ignore the objective will of the Father and grasp at the divine prerogative of judging good and evil.
You think about the South being Christian, but this wasn't Christianity," Cross said. "So what happened here in the white church? How did we get to that point?" It's a question he explored in his 2014 book, When Heaven and Earth Collide: Racism, Southern Evangelicals, and the Better Way of Jesus.
Correct - wokeism is as what I believe Martin Luther King would say, Christ centered It is love and it is justice. But I see your point if you take Christ out of the center wokeism fails.
It's sad that most educated people in the world, the average" joe", has at least a college level education, yet only a kindergarten religious education. The other way to look at it ... why not investigate the faith, it might be your life insurance and I do not mean 100 years but eternity with your love ones and true happiness. Seems worthwhile.
Yes, let me just see as I work my 16 hours a day my copy of Theodore Adorno writings in German. Bishop, we grew up Catholic Midwestern, Irish German Catholic I transported to California. I remember when I would stay home from school sick or not go to church and on Sunday watch debates between a rabbi a protestant Reverend and a Catholic priest, thinking “that reverence seems to miss the question, and can only respond to it by waving his hands and screaming” We were the result of Vatican two not being fully taught by the priest how to deliver it. I had mentioned to you that when I was 17 I had picked up Thomas Aquinas, and tried to read his book, but I ended up reading the dictionary instead If you want to reach the woke, ism age group , you need to walk with them not talk at them. It’s wonderful that you are writing books for the publishing company but what are you doing to the flock? We build on our experiences and now that we are at this age it’s time for us to pass it down to the next generation by walking with them like Father Greg Boyle instead of selling books and talking at them.
How about what Jesus said: faith is when it will be measured for one as so he does measure. May AI be a part of it? Chinese social rating is something close to that formula of faith?
In Thanksgiving: { USA 🇺🇸} : btw: Preaentation Theological having the Very Reverend Archbishop as keynote speaker: btw: thank you 🙏: again; 😢 thank you 😊
This was it, in a nutshell. We can choose one of two axioms: 1) Baron's summary of Aquinas, which is (I think) an ascending nurturing, transcend and include growth holoarchy structured on The Good The True, and The Beautiful toward the Kingdom of God, (see Ken Wilber Integral Theory) or 2) A recklessly indulgent and cynical flatland Gnosticism of resentment, envy, and suspicion that sees nurturing holoarchies and God as oppresive power hierarchies to be torn down. Historically, this always results in death, starvation, and chaos. Also, the latter can only grow by parasitizing on the generosity of the former. The ultimate parasite being the Marxist university professor and the metastasizing Woke administrative class it begets.
Is it really consistent with Catholic commitment to the dignity of the individual to call anyone a parasite, no matter how much with disagree with them or how terrible we think their actions? I really worry about this kind of language (and worry when it is used by those on other parts of the political spectrum too)
Is bishops Baron truly trying to instill in us understanding or impress us with his knowledge and understanding and interpretation of philosophy? How many commoners can relate? Willing the good for another is being able to communicate on a basic level so all can understand not only the philosophical intellectuals
No. He's promoting the Cultural Marxist Conspiracy Theory that is very dangerous and has encouraged many terrorist acts around the world. I think the first Q&A actually addresses what woke is. There he says that he agrees with woke. But the rest of it is him falling in a nasty conspiracy theory that should not be shared by a person like him.
I find some of his talks (like this one) to be quite technically dense, presumably because he is addressing an audience who already have some background in philosophy. Bishop Barron has a lot of talks on various subjects that are more directed towards laypeople, which might be worth looking into if you are interested.

Is actual discrimination simply false for those who don't experience it? I speak in the area of race only of which my personal experience of beginning of "woke" in the 70's and 80's now hijacked by a gender identity fad. So if the heart of a person in a position of authority is flawed does this cause the position of authority to be of less effect? Who is right the person giving pain or the person receiving the pain? Right will shine through even when the heart of the person is wrong that SHOULD use the power right.
There is no absolute racism but there is racism. To deny this in our lives is a disservice to those who endure it and to act as if all of a group are racist is another disservice to those who don't deserve the lable
As newman has said the real experience of something gives it a certain truth. When you live it you better understand it. Rather right or wrong there is an understanding past that of hearsay and propaganda. God is right and someone is wrong. When wrong is present we must accept it as wrong even when others want this wrong to be right. But with love shall we express our dissent and respect. Living peaceful with others. Forcing someone to accept the Word of God doesn't make it real to the one being forced. Unfortunately we cannot so change a heart until God's grace allows this within a person.
You’ve introduced me to more philosophers, I have taken philosophy, ethics, theology, and an every one of those courses I quote you at least monthly, if not weekly. During my weekly Bible study again, but I am someone that has the luxury of being able to have an education. 90% of your flock can’t understand you and that doesn’t mean dumb it down. The world has changed before everybody could go to college no they cannot. I’ll say it again you need to go walk with your flock. Don’t talk Adam don’t talk down don’t sell for pays yourself to sell more books.
i certainly agree with the analysis. however, i cannot help but to notate that not if but when the vatican approves in pastoral care the blessings of same sex partners as some sort of gift from God; that this same vatican feeds into the same wokeness of which Bishop Barren speaks about. if repentance is no more than anything goes and anything or any relationship can be blessed, what then is striving for the narrow road into heaven as Jesus has said to do? when the priest blesses the people at the conclusion of the Mass, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, is this not the blessing of the people of God who have come with contrite hearts to change from the sins guilty in a heart into a heart and soul which is guided by the Holy Spirit. The woke culture we live in is the same wokeness of the past which defy the laws of God as well as the Spirit of these same laws. the pope, the cardinals, the bishops the priests the deacons cannot separate doctrine from pastoral care. they can never do this unless they violate the very law of God and the Holy Spirit which guides the church. i am seeing a lot of “i will do it my way”. from the the vatican prelates and not what is taught by Jesus the Christ. Jesus would never go against His Father’s laws as he fulfills them completely; so why would any of the elites in the vatican think they can pastorally bless same sex relationships. then the drag queens in their partnerships will ask this as well as the alphabet schizophrenia of the gay pride agenda movement. that would be a travesty as well as a sad rendition to giving into the woke movement of the day which is so full of itself and its propaganda.
Picture that will not post shows a child on the left was old enough to pick cotton and the child on the right was old enough to attend Klan rallies, then today's children are old enough to learn about both of these and how they've led us to where we are today. They look like they’re both three or 4 years old. I don’t believe you’re against critical race theory. Again, I would encourage you to walk amongst the people instead of remaining in theory in your head in your office.
We need a million more priests like Bishop Barron! He is courageous, loving, and divinely intelligent. What a gift he is to the faithful.

Excellent!!!
Saving for later. Would be nice if there was an article on this topic by Bishop Barron, this is something I'd rather read about than listen to.
I plan to listen to it over and over!
I just l listed to this presentation today, but I had heard before. Like you, I now would like to have it in written form, so I plan to reach out to his WORD on Fire Ministry for that. God bless you.
Bishop Barron is a treasure.
I love listening to Bp. Barron for his deep intellectual perspective that comes from his own labors and research. He is both informative and yet always provides subtle "black hat" information that I am certain he does not consider. I appreciate his words and the words that go unstated.
Thank you again, Bishop Barron, for helping us understand this malignant "philosophy". Greetings from Brazil.
Thanks much for this video.
This was very mind opening,I learned a lot.
As someone who has sympathies on both sides of the issue I appreciate his deeper philosophical analysis then usually comes with those who use the phrase "wokism".
I would like to know after listening to this video, what Bishop Barron‘s feelings are about Ron DeSantis‘s radical policies against wokeism.
I think those in power or seeking after power use/ misuse words and their meanings for their own agendas.
BTW- ( USA 🇺🇸) : for the record: these ideas 💡 are fabulous: again: fabulous
If the young people are not going to church, go to the young people and bring them back
Just Brilliant.
@@columbmurray Thanks! I hope the world can get back on track away from this confusion.
LOVE 💯% … Amen 🙏🏼
In Thanksgiving: btw: the Presentation is wonderful: again: wonderful
Amen!
Dear Bishop Robert Barron:
thank you for helping me understand better what "wokeism" means by explaining it through what you consider to be its philosophical pedigree, which, ironically, if I understood you well, you misrepresent in a self-serving, kind of woke way.
I chose to keep my comments on such an important topic about "problems of the mind" which need to be addressed by priests and anyone with a sense of empathy towards out neighbors, because it became too large and they would not let me post it here:
ipsoscustodes.wordpress.com/2024/08/02/philosophical-pedigree-of-wokeismq/

I have a question for you: were those your own ideas or have you noticed other philosophers making such associations?
Thank you,
RCL^2
Starts at 5:22
Your grace. That’s how you address a bishop.
22:20 & 34:42 for any CPI people. Especially fellow Christians.

Thank you.
dialoge is beyond tolerance which can lead to understanding and to " understand is to forgive"
Very good analysis of wokeism, which is a species of postmodernism
This ideology of woke ism has taken a substantial hold on our society for the past several decades. How do we turn this around and will we be able to?
The Decartes error/fallacy is that thinking alone defines one's humanity.
God is the arbiter of truth not our “ thinking”
I suspect that Barron doesn't fundamentally oppose Descartes but is saying that the self-centric idea has mutated and gone too far. And also, my interpretation is that "my thinking" is the arbiter of truth as far as I can experience (because of my flawed existence apart from God), but I recognise that Truth belongs to God. Either alternative is dangerous:
My thinking as the sole arbiter of truth: leads to subjectivism, wokeism etc.
BISHOP BARRON OUR MODERN ON EARTH SAVIOR KEN- ROCKY MTS.
I always like the Italian phrase “ti voglio bene” as the way they tell someone they truly love, that they are loved…”i love you”….I wish you well.
Another great, enlightening talk by Bishop Barron! Thank you!
Great stuff…..thank you
Please list some theorists of Wokism.
BTW - wishing you a glorious evening and as well an amazing 🤩 day ahead tomorrow
You don't know what to love in a person. There is only one thing to love in a person, that is God
fwiw-Keynote Speajer ( Roman Catholic) : btw: The Very Reverend Archbishop Robert Barron at Presentation: fwiw: thank you 🙏: again: thank you 🙏
i love the Bishop! i was debateing with a friend what is love? and i said obedience to Love, and she said obedience out of LOve to the Lord :)) .......obedience to the Love is to listen to the objective truth....and not inventing your own love and then decide what to do with it...as if we are the source of love
I doubt you have true love with different values, if by values, you mean same thinking
As Rumi wrote: "beyond the differences between you and me, there is a field. I will meet you there."...
Action, Rome.
humans really know how to complicate basically everything. When we ignore the objective will of the Father and grasp at the divine prerogative of judging good and evil.
Some people I know believe in the abstractness of faith and God and Jesus was once concrete. The abstractness of the Church?
"Wokeism" or "stay woke" from what i understand is that, stay wake be alert because you can miss opportunities or chances to prosper, move forward??
You think about the South being Christian, but this wasn't Christianity," Cross said. "So what happened here in the white church? How did we get to that point?" It's a question he explored in his 2014 book, When Heaven and Earth Collide: Racism, Southern Evangelicals, and the Better Way of Jesus.
Correct - wokeism is as what I believe Martin Luther King would say, Christ centered
It is love and it is justice.
But I see your point if you take Christ out of the center wokeism fails.
Невеста Христа это церковь?
It's sad that most educated people in the world, the average" joe", has at least a college level education, yet only a kindergarten religious education. The other way to look at it ... why not investigate the faith, it might be your life insurance and I do not mean 100 years but eternity with your love ones and true happiness. Seems worthwhile.
What is good for God, is good for us. Then, we must know who God is.
Adultry is virtue. This will lead millions to God! 😅
Yes, let me just see as I work my 16 hours a day my copy of Theodore Adorno writings in German.
Bishop, we grew up Catholic Midwestern, Irish German Catholic I transported to California. I remember when I would stay home from school sick or not go to church and on Sunday watch debates between a rabbi a protestant Reverend and a Catholic priest, thinking “that reverence seems to miss the question, and can only respond to it by waving his hands and screaming”
We were the result of Vatican two not being fully taught by the priest how to deliver it.
I had mentioned to you that when I was 17 I had picked up Thomas Aquinas, and tried to read his book, but I ended up reading the dictionary instead
If you want to reach the woke, ism age group , you need to walk with them not talk at them.
It’s wonderful that you are writing books for the publishing company but what are you doing to the flock?
We build on our experiences and now that we are at this age it’s time for us to pass it down to the next generation by walking with them like Father Greg Boyle instead of selling books and talking at them.
11:28
Like and share!!!
I really worry about this kind of language (and worry when it is used by those on other parts of the political spectrum too)
and I would note Bishop Barron does not use this kind of language against people even when he criticises their ideas
Barons loves to out quote philosopher s not well known to the average Catholics articulate the average catholic
Very impressive your eminence
You addressed him as a cardinal.😊 not yet.
In Thanksgiving { USA 🇺🇸} : btw: Media Technical Support People at Presentation { Roman Catholic} - ( Awareness- Understanding Philosophy of Modern Thought- information ℹ️ fabulous ) : btw. Thanks 😊
Wokeism is the beatitudes
The beatitudes are the antithesis of Wokeism.
I laughed at loud when Bishop Barron said that according to karl marx, he would be considered a drug dealer 😂
When did anyone at the Vatican bless a same sex couple( maybe just as friends)?
Picture that will not post shows a child on the left was old enough to pick cotton and the child on the right was old enough to attend Klan rallies, then today's children are old enough to learn about both of these and how they've led us to where we are today.
They look like they’re both three or 4 years old.
I don’t believe you’re against critical race theory. Again, I would encourage you to walk amongst the people instead of remaining in theory in your head in your office.
