I've fixed up a couple places that after they were complete I believed it would have been less costly to knock them down and rebuild. I never took the time to pencil the alternatives out. In both instances it would have been difficult or impossible to get a permit to rebuild on the same footprint. Once because of side yard setbacks and once because the old cabin (fishing shack) was only 22 feet from the lake and regulations now require a 75' setback from the lake.

After several weekends invested in methodically pulling off the various layers and getting to studs, he tore the whole thing down. Saved material worth saving. Hauled off the rest. I had family members who raised their 2 girls on a large farm in a small 2 bedroom old house. The kitchen was the largest room as the original owner had to have space to feed harvest hands, as did my family. They drove the same 1940s tractor and 1950s car and never put unnecessary money into the house. The girls married and moved away. When they sold the farm in favor of traveling in an RV I was shocked at how well they had done saving for retirement. Auntie was dripping in expensive jewelry and they traveled extensively wherever the notion took them well into their 80s when Unc passed. She stayed traveling between the two daughters alone until she passed at near 90, leaving each girl a tidy inheritance. Just goes to show, you never know what's behind four walls. Could be a jewel or two.

I commented on Brooke’s channel awhile ago on the subject of this cabin. We bought an almost identical horror movie type cabin on beautiful property a few years ago. This summer, my husband and I started to peel away the layers and found the exact situation. Rot everywhere, three jacks holding the floor up and layers of shingles and nails. Anyway, we did a controlled burn with the volunteer fire department and now we have a flat lovely spot to either build a pole barn for our camper or start a new log cabin. Clean slate! We knew ours was too far gone. I cried when my husband said that we needed to burn it. I was so hoping that we could do something with it. Now I’m glad he suggested it. My mind is going crazy with all of the possibilities. Love your family’s channels. Always, always entertaining and informative!

Wonderful progress. I love your idea of chucking stove-sized pieces of molding into your wood stove to eliminate it. Warmth and solves the disposal problem well. Best wishes to you and your family in 2025!

I'm not sure whether you are a genius or crazy but your attitude is admirable. Reminds me of the song Me and Bobby McGee- "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose". And then you light the stove.

That aluminum is used in roll up doors /gates, previous owner probably has free access to it because it’s expensive. That’s a great project, I’ve done a few just like that in less desirable places. I’d do this one just to be in the woods all day.

That was my reaction too - nobody would buy stuff like that to do that job - he obviously either took it piece by piece when nobody was looking, or had some other way to "acquire" it, but almost guaranteed he did not buy it for this job !

Man you crack me up. “Nothing like taking a bunch of junk and setting it on fire.” So glad the smoke was only coming from the chimney! I wonder if the porcupines were trying to keep their teeth filed and not actually eating the sheet rock? Hey, there you go, recycle that wood and have your coffee too. ❤

This is gonna be one heck of a series to follow! My dad bought a cabin in this condition back in 1999 and spent eight years restoring it. It was so bad that you couldn't step on the floors in certain parts of it and one of the walls just fell into the yard when he leaned on it. It was a helluva job, but worth it! If you ever get a Discord server running I'll share some photos with you!

I am here for it....I've been waiting for this for some time now. My husband and I bought a small retirement project farmhouse that I thought was in bad shape but this takes the cake. At least yours is in a more perfect location. This one is on a little country road and I don't do roads. I don't want the 2 cars that go by a day to be able to see me...I haven't lived in sight of a road for so long I just can't do it. We will build on back side of the 30 acres and use the house as a garage/ barn. Good luck to ya...I feel your pain. Remember, it's just work. And it's so quiet!

I totally understand! When we were looking for land, the requisite was to hike to the middle of the property and stop and listen carefully. If there was any vehicle noise, that tract was off the table!

Well Dave your humor and optimism is wonderful as for me I would have had a good cry then rented a big front loader and tore it down and started from scratch , I had to replace 3 floor joist in my home because I didn’t know the ac drain wasn’t draining apparently it had been like that for years and since it didn’t leak out onto my floors for me to see it yeah what a nightmare, but I have a remodeled bathroom and will be laying new toung and grove flooring through out home just takes along time as hubby and I work so every other weekend we get to work on home. Who cares not like anyone drives this far to visit us lol

That's how I get rid of all my old trailers while I restore them. Slowly it all goes through the burn barrel. Next year I'll have a wood stove in the living room and then my old trailer wood will supply that. I've remodeled older and more screwed up houses David. This will be fun. Time consuming but fun.

I renovated a couple of condos and I'm fixing up a house to sell now. It all paid off, but it's pretty lonely work. I also tore down an old camping trailer on my new property that reminds me of this cabin. I think I got about $80 for the thin aluminum siding that it had on it, but you should a lot more for those thick pieces. My new neighbors are great. I don't want to be ALL alone, I just want to have people near me that I get along with, and I think I found it in western PA.
