We explore 2 Nephi 4, or Nephi’s psalm. We look at the context of the beautiful psalm, and what caused Nephi to feel such a heartfelt, deep-seated stirring. John Tanner reads two of his own poetical renditions of the psalm. We explore what it teaches us about being born again and the pathway go holiness and godliness and how those teachings can apply to us at whatever level of godliness or holiness we are in. We look at how this all ties to Christ and His atoning sacrifice, and the need to trust in Christ’s transformative power and its ability to truly change us.
You can read about John's renditions at scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/v....
You can listen to them at • I Love the Lord - BYU ... (there are other renditions as well).
We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and for our producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

I have loved his version of 2 Nephi 4 since it was performed in General Conference like 20 years ago. It hit my heart like a bolt of lightning at a time in my life that I really needed it. Thank you for doing this discussion with Bro Tanner. Such a treasure.

Amen to that! The beauty of the psalm is complimented by the beauty of what John Tanner did with his reaction to it!

Just read a really great article "the Psalm of Nephi in an age of anxiety and division". by Patrick Mason. It prompted me to look up the song "I Love the Lord" by John Tanner which brought me here. :) Great video and comments by Bro Tanner! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Kerry, for the link to I Love the Lord. It was absolutely beautiful! Wouldn't it be wonderful if they put these lyrics in the new hymnbook?

Thanks so much for this podcast and all of your podcast. They are inspiring. I loved the discussion at the end of this podcast about transforming ourselves and being born again with Christ's help. Making Heavenly Father's will our will is not always easy, but I strongly believe it is the only way for us to experience true and lasting joy. Another way this can be said is for us to strive to develop a broken heart and contrite spirit, like The Savior has invited us to do. Thanks again for all the time you put into these podcasts.

I love this! I discussed the meaning of having a broken heart and contrite spirit in one of my daily bread entries at TSAR.website. It is such an important thing for us to strive for. Well said!

Hey I'm from Alhambra! I love the suggestion to pray for the Lord to change our desires - This is such an important part of repentance and transformation.

Amen to your very delightful conversion, thank you. I hope Dr Tanner has submitted his hymns for the new hymn book. Two teaches very fun for you both of you and lovely to be part of. Loved the four P’s from President Nelson, can be so deceiving. Is chapter four coming on the back of 2 Nephi 1-3 some 30 years later? The thought came if that is the case, he is recalling his sorrow at his family situation and not only were they so rude to him in the past, in the present that he is writing they have had wars between them, so they are still doing it, is that right? Nephi feels such deep love for all that is good, he is such a type for Christ is his spirit is shrinking at the sight of sin? In this moment is he becoming more yoked with Christ, as we can be as we make choices to love over resentment. When you were about “asking not amiss” and the transformative power of the atonement of Jesus Christ the thought came that in that moment Nephi is fully committed that the Lord’s power will lift him out. I think it maybe the case with King Lamoni’s father also, I always marvel at his sincerity to give away all his sins. I guess as I get older I see that, that is a life long commitment also. Oh to keep hope smiling brightly before us and asking not amiss. Submitting to the will of the Lord in all things as he did His Father, I love Nephi’s sensitivity to sin in his darkest moments. Long comment, you two should not have been so stimulating.

We are so grateful for feedback and comments like this. We have been invited to have online conversations like this. It is wonderful!
Yes, I think that Nephi is recording both his father's teachings, and his father's death, leading to his heartfelt psalm, several decades later. I love the way your comments illuminate Nephi's soul for us!

Don't be so sure Nephi is beyond all carnal sensuality...or himself becoming and being the enemy of other persons who are beautifully and vertuosly minded and higher in chastity than Nephi can know because of his narcissistic pride

    • @TheScripturesAreReal

I am sure that Nephi had struggles, just like all of us. I don't know that I would classify it the way you have, though there is also no doubt that every single one of us but Christ has had a measure of narcissistic pride that we need to conquer. And towards that end, it is wonderful to see Nephi conquering his share of it, and I hope it helps me conquer my share of it.
