  • The song is titled "I Love The Lord". The arrangement is by Ronald Staheli. The lyrics are a paraphrase of 2 Nephi 4.
    I Love the Lord
I love the Lord, in Him my soul delights.
Upon His word, I ponder day and night.
He's heard my cry, brought visions to my sleep,
And kept me safe o'er deserts and the deep.
He's filled my heart with His consuming love,
And borne me high on wings of His great dove.
Yet oft I groan, "O wretched man am I"
My flesh is weak and Im encompassed by
A world of sin, which holds me in its thrall,
If I give in and to temptations fall.
    Then strength grows slack, I waste in sorrows vale;
My peace destroyed, my enemies prevail.
Awake, my soul! No longer droop in sin.
Rejoice, my heart! And let me praise again,
The Lord my God, who is my rock and stay
To keep me strict upon His straight, plain way.
Oh let me shake at the first sight of sin
And thus escape my foes without and in.
I love the Lord, In him my soul delights.

I was a part of the choir singing this song and I have to tell you it was one of the most moving experiences of my life. After finishing it was one of the most incredible feelings in the conference center. You could literally hear a pin drop. The songs message and principles have certainly changed my life for the better.

I was in the audience and I totally agree with you. When that final note lingered into silence = wow. Usually in between the song and prayer people start to rustle around and you can hear a lot of audience noise. Not after this song. A pin drop would have seemed deafening.

I was sitting in a chapel in Taiwan when I heard the performance. It moved me to tears. Unfortunately, those around me couldn’t understand the lyrics. I can only imagine what it would have been like in the conference center-listening or performing! I later bought the sheet music and translated it into Chinese. We performed it in our ward’s sacrament meeting, but four singers can’t match the power of the BYU Men’s Choir.

Amazing, it is so far the most beautiful version of Finnish Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia”, that I’ve heard with other words than ours... Sibelius wanted also people to rise and see higher to take their lives to the next level. He walked in the Finnish forests and fields and got the inspiration to music often there, in direct contact with nature and many would say our Heavenly Father. This song from 1890s was the cornerstone of the national awakening in Finland - and when getting our independence from Soviet Russia in 1917 - our national flag was centered with a blue CROSS on a white background. The cross is the Christian background of our country, culture and faith. (Such as in other Nordic countries). Very interesting and inspiring that this song becomes a hymn for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Very beautifully sung, beautiful words too which I would think also Sibelius would probably love very much to hear... ☺️

I love the Lord. I remember reading the 4th chapter of 2 Nephi, and being so moved by the Spirit, being consumed rather. This chapter already made me so grateful for the Lord's abounding mercy and his guide and help for overcoming our carnal, sinful nature, but along to Be Still, My Soul, it is so incredibly beautiful.

This was probably my favorite song we ever sang in Men's Choir. Much love to Sister Hall and everyone else that I haven't seen from that choir in nearly 10 years now (WOW time flies)! I'm also very glad to read the comments and see how many people loved this song. We really tried to do it justice and invite the Spirit. I'll cherish this forever. Thanks again for posting.

Everything stopped in my home when I turned this rendition of "Be Still My Soul" sung acapella. I'm sure our Lord was pleased for he loves the human voice. I love the orchestra but there is such a harmonic blend of voices to work with. My request would be to hear more acapella hymns sung. Acapella singing is so moving to the mind and soothing to the soul. Not to forget the talent that creates such heartfelt sound.

The composition describes Finland's struggle for freedom during our latest war. This particular song sumbolizes the finnish army kneeling in the batterfield in worn uniforms praying för help from above! Katharine von Schlegel wrote the words to this hymn during the 17th century, 100 years before The Book of Mormon even existed. She based the words off of Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." I just don't know how she could have any intention of it being anything relating to 2 Nephi 4 if 2 Nephi was not written until a century later...years after von Schlegel had died. I love this hymn and this arrangement.

Christ was resurrected on Sunday (St. John 20:1). The Apostles and the rest of the church started to commemorate His resurrection by having the Sabbath on Sunday (Acts 20:7) Also with the death and resurrection of Christ was the Law of Moses fulfilled and all things become new (Romans 7:1-6). So having the Sabbath on Sunday was also a statement that you are also new and a follower of Christ.

Excellent choir and arrangement. Some difficult intervals there, and they did each perfectly. Very stirring.

This actually isn't "Be Still My Soul". It's the tune Finlandia with new words. Latter Day Saints only know it as Be Still My Soul but Finlandia is used for a variety of hymns including "We Rest on Thee"; "I Sought the Lord"; "A Christian Home"; "This Is My Song"; and "I Then Shall Live".
But THIS rendition has got to be my favorite by far! When they sing "O Lord My God" it really does make me shake with both fear and love. Incredibly haunting and beautiful. Well done!

There is nothing out of the ordinary here, its done all the time in every genre of music, and most Mormons recognize this and in fact we have books in every Mormon library that give the history of each hymn and give credit where credit is due, its not something we try to avoid or somehow take credit for. Its just artists and composers finding and using what is inspiring to them and fits there purpose, again in every genre. There's no conspiracy or conflict here to drum up. We are genuinely grateful for the contributions of all people, the church is a world wide church with many different cultures, and this will be reflected on the leadership and the music, as well as the general membership in the smallest branch of members, in the farthest reaches of earth.
