    Dear doc, my wife was having sudden onset of neck pain shortly after waking up and i have noticed a slightly raised trapezius muscles on her right side. It gets better in 2 days and completely goes away in about 2- 3 weeks. It is happening intermittently . Should we be worried about? When we consulted the GP, she told it is Torticollis. And when I googled the term it is leading me to more serious conditions which says it is gonna progress and should have botox injected and all.

    • @adelaidewestphysio
      @adelaidewestphysio Месяц назад

      Acute torticollis is another term for wry neck. It could be what your wife is having (it is hard to be sure without seeing her, of course) but it sounds like it. The raised trapezius in that case would be the muscle system responding and becoming protective. There is nothing in my experience that would suggest that it would progress or need any botox. What is important is to make sure that at the end of the episode, when it has settled, that she regains full range of movement again and she doesn't have some lingering restriction 😀

    • @adelaidewestphysio
      @adelaidewestphysio 3 месяца назад

      I guess there is, it all comes down to what your current capabilities are. If you have a walking tolerance of 20 mins and you walk for 2 hours, you might find yourself muscle sore, your joint might be swollen and sore as a result too. That amount might be fine for someone else, but for you it is too much at this point in time.

      Sorry to hear that. Wry necks can hurt a LOT! Typically things will improve over the next few days, whether you use ice or heat is up to you, but I tend to suggest heat to help the muscles to relax a little. You won't do any harm with ice either. Ice can have the effect of reducing pain and muscle activity too, it just comes down to which feels better for you.

      @bangonfishingadventures4957 personally, I wouldn't rush into it. You'll find that _if it is a wry neck _it will start to improve over the next 24-48 hours, there is a natural resolution that will happen. I'd get an opinion from a physio you trust about how you should manage it from here.

    how do you make your clients believe you! and how to convince them that they should do their exercises?

    • @adelaidewestphysio
      @adelaidewestphysio 2 года назад

      If you are working in a practice or an environment where electrotherapy is still used a lot, or if your clients expect it, then it is going to be a gradual process to turn that ship around. I imagine you might have to start with reducing the electro and increasing the exercises rather than going cold turkey. We have a constant dialogue about this stuff with patients and have a culture of self efficacy, so it is relatively easy for us, but I recognise that if your culture is an expectation of certain things, it is harder. But you have to start somewhere. How to convince people to do their exercises? Don't give out random exercises. Prescribe exercises that you believe in. Don't give out too many. Don't give them out last in a consult, give them first. Review them first in a consult to give them importance. Biggest tip: when you prescribe an exercise, ask them patient if doing them x times a day is 'doable', then get them to think about when they will do them and plan it before they leave the room.

      Hey Amanda, good question! In the next video that we publish there will be an example, but it is a situation where you are using your muscles to create the range of movement, or to control the increase in range of movement. For example, if you want to increase your hamstring flexibility, it might be lifting your straight leg up and controlling that movement rather then bending forwards and letting gravity act on your body to passively stretch the muscle. I hope that helps! 😀

At least doing this gives you an idea if it will help, and you can use it more longer term if you want. Otherwise, check out the pillows that have adjustable elements to them. Fantastic breakdown of leg injuries for Soccer players Lachie. Very informative. I particularly liked hearing the recommendations on how to avoid such injuries (where possible) . I would be very interested to watch similar 'Top 10 Injuries' for other popular kids sports. Gymnastics, Netball, AFL etc. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for that feedback Jon. I agree, it's one thing hearing what the top 10 are, but what you want to know is how to avoid them!! 😁 Cheers
