  • Bioplasticity applies to all our tissues all through life - including cartilage. It can degrade but it can improve. The right amount of load can improve cartilage health.
In this video, I present the concept of bioplasticity particularly with reference to joint cartilage, and illustrate how it works using two studies:
Spaceflight and hind limb unloading induces an arthritic phenotype in knee articular cartilage and menisci of rodents Kwok et al Scientific Reports (2021) 11:10469 doi.org/10.1038/s41598-021-90...
Can marathon running improve knee damage of middle-aged adults? A prospective cohort study
Horga LM et al BMJ Open Sp Ex Med 2019;5:e000586 doi.org/10.1136/bmjsem-2019-0... (this one is open access, check it out)
If you have knee or hip osteoarthritis, this is definitely worth a read - it's called 'How Will I Know When It's Time' and it's all about deciding IF and WHEN you need a joint replacement.

Thanks! Agreed, exercise is vital for lots of reasons, and it's amazing what changes it can induce, even in cartilage!!

is there such a thing as too much walking btw?

I guess there is, it all comes down to what your current capabilities are. If you have a walking tolerance of 20 mins and you walk for 2 hours, you might find yourself muscle sore, your joint might be swollen and sore as a result too. That amount might be fine for someone else, but for you it is too much at this point in time.
