Electrotherapy In Physiotherapy - A Bit Of A Rant

  • Electrotherapy in physiotherapy is a traditional (but outdated) aspect of physiotherapy that has been shown to be ineffective for many conditions.
This is a rant but not without reason. Nothing is worse than seeing a patient who has had weeks of treatment with electrotherapy but hasn't improved, or learnt any skills to help themselves.
We choose to use therapies that are researched and allow the patient to learn something, particularly about how they might be able to manage their problem!

how do you make your clients believe you! and how to convince them that they should do their exercises?

If you are working in a practice or an environment where electrotherapy is still used a lot, or if your clients expect it, then it is going to be a gradual process to turn that ship around. I imagine you might have to start with reducing the electro and increasing the exercises rather than going cold turkey.
We have a constant dialogue about this stuff with patients and have a culture of self efficacy, so it is relatively easy for us, but I recognise that if your culture is an expectation of certain things, it is harder. But you have to start somewhere.
How to convince people to do their exercises? Don't give out random exercises. Prescribe exercises that you believe in. Don't give out too many. Don't give them out last in a consult, give them first. Review them first in a consult to give them importance. Biggest tip: when you prescribe an exercise, ask them patient if doing them x times a day is 'doable', then get them to think about when they will do them and plan it before they leave the room.
