    I feel the same way about the NES Final Fantasy games. I've tried the original NES game, then the GBA remaster, and every time I never finish. There is a lot of grinding in old NES RPGs, just like "NES difficulty", to pad out the game length, and the battle system is nothing more than have bigger numbers and manage your resources so you can make it back to up after a long dungeon dive or make it the next save point.

    "Just Breed" is a bad choice of words by Japanese developers who didn't know English. They wanted a title along the lines of "Righteous Lineage", but they chose the wrong suggestions from their Japanese-English dictionary.

    You should give the game another chance when the retranslation that fixes a lot of the issues of the original release as well as the running and exp patch (Capcom realized their mistake and increased the amount of EXP you gain and added a run button in the GBA port) That being said, the BoF sequels are really nice classics that are deserving of your attention

      @@rpg_haven just a heads up, the Taito PS2 Ys games (Ys III, IV and V) are kind of infamous due to being basically budget games, especially Ys III with it's infamous prerelease art of Adol That being said some of the music is quite nice and from what I gathered V is seen as the best one of the three since V wasn't a perfect game to begin with and it even adds some stuff that didn't make it into the SFC version (though also omits some stuff)

    It's incredibly impressive how many mechanics and ideas this game created would indirectly inspire turn-based RPGs today. Recruiting tens of monsters to train and grow, a time mechanic in the form of moon phases, the idea of replayability in an RPG, and multiple endings (hence the word “Tensei”, reincarnation, in the title). It's fascinating how Megami Tensei and SMT as a whole were the catalysts of so many ideas in future RPGs, and yet even after 30+ years, it's relatively niche.

    • @rpg_haven
      @rpg_haven 2 дня назад

      Well said. Atlus carved out their own niche in the genre that others can't copy without looking like ripoffs. And wow, I didn't even mention the moon phases. Probably because I don't understand them ;]

    • @Wevegottrouble
      @Wevegottrouble 2 дня назад

      @@rpg_haven It's fine lol. A lot of people struggle with it. Basically, as you walk, the phases of the moon change, from new all the way to full, then reverse. Like everything else in MT, it's archaic and not fleshed out well, affecting the attack power of demons. It wouldn't be until SMT that would progressively flesh it out, often as a measurement of time for puzzles or items in SMT3 Nocturne. Persona 3 in 2006 and SMT4A, years later, in 2016, would actually use the phases of the moon as an important part of the story. Hope that helps!

    Have you played SMT: Strange Journey yet? If you enjoyed the dungeon crawling of the early series, Strange Journey is the fully evolved, as of this point, dungeon crawling experience for the series. I'd say it's worth experiencing to see how far the the early formula got before it shifted away from it for the more 3D approach they started going with.

      @decarabiaumbra560 2 дня назад

      @rpg_haven Haven't played DDS yet. It's more in line with the first two smt games and the digital devil games, only strange journey is actually fun to play and explore. I tried playing soul hackers after, and I was surprised by the amount of qol added between the older dungeon crawlers and strange journey, most importantly the removal of magnetite and summoning costs. I feel it's one of the better games in terms of alignment endings too. Your choices actually matter, instead of it being just, "which ending do you choose", they don't feel as divergent content wise as smt 4 was, and the endings actually sell the values of each alignment with out feeling dissonant or over complicated to how the alignments are portrayed in the game up to the point, unlike smt 2 and 4 with their non-neutral routes.

  • @decarabiaumbra560
    @decarabiaumbra560 3 дня назад

    Yeah, having watched the SMT themed RUclipsr, Marsh, detailing the plot of the digital devil story series, knowing the full context only makes it weirder, to the point where you question how SMT even got the chance to spawn from this.

    The demon summoning on a computer concept makes sense when you consider that what those rituals involve is drawing symbols and saying words at specific times. Computers can draw shapes extremely precisely and execute commands at exact time intervals, so they could conceivably perform those things more consistently than a human could.

    I think one big quality get often overlook... and it's sadly because JRPG nowaday is a popular genre every know how it works, combine with the fact DQIV is now an old game so very few player will start by it... but now imagine you've never played a JRPG before and this game for whatever reason ends up being your first, now suddenly the chapter base intro makes more sense, cause you see it's actually a big tutorial : -Chapter 1 : Makes you in control of one character that is bulky enough battles won't be to dangerous, and a character that is simple. It actually introduce you to the basics of how the battle works, with the basic command of attack and Defend, and it also introduce you to the basics of how progressing and exploring in this game works. -Chapter 2 : Up the standard, by now giving you a full team, with 2 characters having spells, this chapter introduce how to play with a team of characters instead of a solo one, teaching you that each characters have their strength and weakness and therefore have different purpose. Chapter 3..... Ok that one is the exception, and is the only one of the bunch that feel off, at least it gives the novelty of being the merchant for once. Chapter 4 : Put you in a tough situation of having 2 characters rather squishy... then it gives you a guest character that is much more sturdy, and this one is suppose to teach how the line-up works, if you pay attention if the guest character is in the third slot you may notice the twins get hit more often than him, which indicate you the earlier a character is in the line up the more ofteb it get hits, and so you must change your line up and put the guest character first. So yeah these 4 chapters are actually a big tutorial, and I really think it does a great job at teaching you all of this without flat out telling you, and without taking the player for an idiot and letting him just enough clue to figuring out all this stuff. But as said this quality get lost cause nowadays, everyone knows how to play a JRPG, so by today this is very basic, but this is actually well done, the game is further well as in chapter 5 they give the Hero just enough solo battle in the first dungeon with him/her, for him/her to catch up in level with the other. And as an all I just considerer this game the perfect entry point to the DQ series for new players and even a good entry point for the JRPG genre as an all : -The game is well designed all around, I never felt lost once in this one, and the difficulty overall is very well balance (only minor difficulty spikes for me was that big lion boss and the final boss). -It introduce every core mechanics of the DQ serie, also introduce every character's roles that exist in the serie, without any complex progression system to keep it simple and it also introduce some staple of the serie like the Small Medals quest. -And as an all is a pretty short JRPG that takes no longuer than 20-30 hours. So yeah this game is really good, it's overall design is very solid, but as said if you're a seasoned DQ or JRPG players, then the quality of this game's design are easy to overlook. Tldr : This game's simplicity is both it's biggest strength and biggest weakness, depending of the players and the expectations.

    Personally when it comes to me and 'games not aging well' I find early (full) 3D titles fit that bill. Before developers figured out controls and a decent camera. However I usually find that RPGs of that era have aged better as a lot of them employed that Final Fantasy style digitized backgrounds and turn based combat, though I guess for a modern gamer the turn based combat makes it feel old (personally I love turn based combat). My favorite games on the PS1 tend to be either RPGs or 2D/2.5D games. I never have much problems going back to 8bjt or 16bit games.

    It's funny how much the story seems to depend on you reading the novel or watching the 45 min anime adaptation of the first novel. Except the story of the game has nothing to do with it but things are explained more in a stupidly graphic way lol. One thing about this game I cannot get over though is the spritework. I am a sucker for NES sprites in general but they have so much personality in this game. I am sure you know this and its sequel got a remake bundle on the Super Famicom and I hear that fixes alot of issues one would have with the original versions so it is really interesting you chose the original version specifically. A better choice when you want to see things historically for sure.

    Rarely would I ever say a game "hasn't aged well," but if there ever was an RPG I would say that about it's this one! If you played the second one right after like I did it is honestly amazing how much the sequel improved on every aspect of the game. I'm no MegaTen expert, I've only played about half the games at most, but MT2 is my favorite out of all the MT games I've tried, even including Persona and the other spinoffs! Can't wait for you to try that one out; I think it will be right up your alley. A huge problem with this game is the number of unrecruitable enemies. It's also a nitpick in MT2 but it's a lot less of an active problem there. In the first game there are simply not enough different recruitables to the point it actively hurts the game experience. I don't think Magnetite has ever done anything in Megami Tensei except add an insignificant amount of grinding. It's just too easy to grind for it so it never really influences your decisions beyond once in a blue moon. There is a reason why the concept as a whole is dropped in the later SMT games.

The story isnt memorable, and it isn’t awful. It’s fine with some really good komenat

    Shining Force (1) was always my favorite game as a kid, but Shining in the Darkness was just a piece of trivia I learned about from the internet until I played it early this year. I think it's a tremendously fun game that deserves way more attention. I did draw my own maps on graph paper, which I genuinely think was the most fun part of the whole experience. I very much appreciate your "fantasy comfort food" thought, I think it's very accurate for how I felt playing the game.

    I agree with the myth for the transforming tree they used that in Tenchi Muyo with Sasami and Tsunami.
