  • How does a game some call the worst of an underwhelming trilogy hold up today?
Developed and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII came to Japan in 2013, hitting foreign shores in 2014.
Get my thoughts on the first two games:

The combat director of this game is Nobuyuki Matsuoka and he went on to design the battle system of FF7 Remake along with Mitsunori Takahashi (KH2 combat director).

That makes a lot of sense. Remake had fun combat

Reasonable, Final Fantasy has had a lot of trouble balancing action turn-based combat ( looking at you ff15) but this game did it very well just like ff7r did

I was so completely neurotic with the time stop that I completed every available Quest on day eight and had to just skip the days until the end. And then the reward of the bonus day was probably the worst part of the game. Disappointing payoff, but I had fun, and that combat system is pretty great.

I appreciate your take on the FF13 trilogy! BTW, if you're anything like me prepare for disappointment with FF15, it's terrible (single button combat, boring characters and plot, and not much else).

Besides concluding a great story, the changes to FF 13-3 were too much. I beat it, but did not enjoy it as much as the previous 2.

i cant stand games with time limits
regardless of whether or not there is plenty of time, i still feel rushed in games like this
i played it once, and shelved it

I genuinely did not like the XIII games back in the day - the storytelling, combat and presentation were all pretty much the opposite of what I enjoy about the series and really JRPGs in general - but maybe they're worth at least another look at some point... how are the PC ports? I've read a lot of bad things, but are they at least more or less functional?
Interesting tier list btw! With as all over the place a series of games as FF, I always find it fascinating how people rank these games and why. Rare to see 2 get such a high rating.

Not sure, I haven't played on PC but I've heard the ports had problems. Maybe they've been fixed by now though. You could even try emulating them, lol
Looking back 13's storytelling feels pretty similar to the earlier games. I'm playing 6 now and it's a rather guided experience where you hop between multiple viewpoints, just like 13.
I'm not sure why the trilogy gets so much hate other than it was popular to hate on it at the time. Industry rags loved to shit on JRPGs during the PS3 era. Its storytelling is comparable and arguably superior to previous entries, if you ask me.

@@rpg_haven There definitely was a groupthink or hatewagon element to the backlash the game/series got, that's for sure.
My personal biggest issue with the storytelling was mostly down to how much of the worldbuiding and context of the story - the sort of elements I personally value most (which is also why I liked 12 a whole lot more than this) - got relegated to the codex or whatever it was called, while the overall focus was on the stylish presentation (which I have some issues with also) and character interactions.
Which then was complicated by the fact that a couple important points of the story just didn't really make much sense when you get down to it - like one example I still vividly remember because it frustrated me quite a bit back then:
Snow acting as though his actions directly led to the death of Hope's mother for example, when the actual scene itself makes it clear that he did everything he could to save her.
I get the point the story _wants_ to get at there - and in concept it works - but the concrete events don't really line up there. Felt like a translation issue.
There's a lot more to say, but this is definitely the sort of thing you can't adequately discuss by way of RUclips comments, I think.
Like I mentioned though, I am interested in giving them another look. Maybe I'll like them more now than I did then.
Hope you enjoy your time with 6!

Completely unrequested update, I know, but I gotta vent real quick - managed to get the Steam port of XIII more or less functional.
Even with the genuine godsend that is fan fixes this one took some doing. Always a good sign when you gotta make registry changes to get a piece of software to even so much as start. Looks great now that it's working though. 60fps, widescreen, all the bells & whistles you could want.
This port's dogwater reputation is absolutely well-deserved. What a mess - and apparently XIII-2 is in an even worse state! So that'll be a fun one to tackle down the line.

This game suffer of low budget and low development time it had so much potential, the battle system was insanely fun and world design was really nice, all wasted by less than 1 year development time

    your tier list sucks dude
how is FF9, and 10 lower tier than 13-2
13-2 was my least favourite FF game
i love FF8, but i understand why people didnt. However, how you can say that FF4 is a C tier is ridiculous
still love your vids though, just calling it as i see it

The Final Fantasy XIII games are by far the worst ones in my opinion. I could not stand the character, I could not stand the super-straight maps, I didn't like the combat whatsoever, and I didn't like the supporting characters either. Everything about ff13 turned me away

1st game besides Avatar Burning Earth that I got 1000Gs in.
Lightning Returns I like more than XIII-2.
    I really love this trilogy
Also changing and experimenting is the nature of Final Fantasy
