  • Phantasy Star II is one of the greatest early JRPGs and deserves more recognition.
    Developed by Sega, Phantasy Star II was originally released in 1989, arriving in the West in 1990. It has seen numerous re-releases over the years. Footage in this video is from Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

    A walkthrough with maps is a MUST for this game.

    One of my all time favorite games. I am glad you liked it. As I said in your live stream chat, it is one of the most JRPGs that ever JRPG-ed.
    Don't feel bad about using online maps for the dungeons. From what I have been told, the original game came prepackaged with dungeon maps. You were meant to have access to them when you play. Someday, I will find a copy of PSII with the maps intact.
    You make a good point about the ending. As a kid, it really hit home for me, but you are correct that there was no reason it had to be people from Earth. I don't think the writer was really going for a "humans are the real baddies" ending so much as going for a twist and made the decision to make them from Earth for a little extra oomph without really considering the full implications. Keep in mind, this game was written by just one person.
    Have fun with Phantasy Star III. It is an insanely ambitious game, though, in my opinion, the weakest of the series. Don't worry though, because while II is my favorite, IV is the best of the bunch.

      I think you're right about the ending's intent, and yeah hahah this is one JRPG-ass JRPG. Didn't know just one person wrote it, damn.
      I recently finished III and liked it, but it's odd for sure. Probably my least favorite overall, too, though it's got the best story. The video on that one should be interesting.

      I would say that this scenario is very close from Captain Harlock space pirate scenario : a manga and serie of SF done by Leiji Matsumoto in which earth governments have been spoiled and corrupted by Sylpheed
      Most humanity is apathetic because of leisure and lack of goal and Harlock doesn't want that for humanity thus he rebels.
      Here too in PSII you end up getting the message that having no goals is a golden cage and you end up being at the Mercy of someone else if you don't take your destiny in your hands.
      Earthling or not has little impact, just the fact that they'll opt for killing all the population once they are weakened enough and the fact that you and your team oppose that knowing that it will bring chaos yet a possible future to your world is a strong ending for me
      This ending was impactful and the story stayed with me for a long time because of that

    This is a BADASS game. I loved it. It came with a nice thick book back in the day. Music is awesome. Now, it's a grind but absolutely worth it. Those up and down dungeon floors will most definitely grind your brain!!

    11:55 The first game does have a reference about a new religion from another galaxy gaining popularity in the Algol system. Churches in that game have giant crosses in them much like Christian churches in our world. Then when you get the second game, and it's like, "oh, so it was the Earthlings behind that religion".

    This comment is a little off topic (I just want to comment for algo, really), but Phantasy Star Online was a real mood for me growing up. The locations and music just hit so differently from other games at the time.

    This is a great game for its era! I'd recommend that anyone play it once, with a guide.
    The original instruction manual actually contained most if not all of the dungeon maps as well as a partial walkthrough I believe, so it isn't "cheating".
    Phantasy Star III is well known as the black sheep of the series, but it was my first Phantasy Star and I liked it quite a bit. Excited to hear a fresh take on it!

    During this video when you were talking about Mother Brain and the human faction it reminded me heavily of this old 70s manga called "Terra e..." I wonder if this story took inspiration from that since I know it is a formative sci fi work in Japan and really good albeit sad series.
    Phantasy Star is a series I wish did the same as Final Fantasy and chose to have single player games properly co exist with the MMOs, maybe I feel this way since I am not a fan of PSO2 lol. It is cool there is atleast one Genesis JRPG series though, one I should play more of.

    II is fun but its my personal least favorite of the four mainline Phantasy Stars. Though most people seem to dislike I, III, or both more.
    Edit: If you want to see III's full story I strongly recommend making a separate save near the end of each chapter. At the end of chapter one you make a decision that leads to very different chapter twos and each chapter two has a decision leading to one of four possible chapter threes (two based on each second chapter). Also III's setting is very different from the others as it is the only game in the set not taking place in the Algos system.

    Being someone that grew up with these games, PS4 is the best in the series. PS2 is still up there though. 3 I feel fell short and 1 is a great start to it. If you like this one, definitely do PS4.

    You walked an entire floor in a dungeon without an encounter? You didn't need to grind much? Sounds like the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection version has had some work done. The original requires grinding and you'll get encounters every few steps in a dungeon.

    • @rpg_haven
      @rpg_haven  2 месяца назад +1

      The Ultimate Genesis Collection version actually doesn't make any gameplay changes that I'm aware of. The encounter rate is high for sure, but over 30 hours you're bound to get good RNG at some points

    • @OhmiKuma
      @OhmiKuma 2 месяца назад

      @@rpg_haven You're probably right. They crammed a bunch of ROMs on there. The emulation might produce results that aren't quite the same as an original cart but hard to tell. I can honestly say I've never walked that far without an encounter though... LOL
      I also find the game to be quite grindy. It's still one of my favorite RPGs from my past though.

    I mean, I like 2 more than 1 and 3, but I wouldn't call it a must-play. Using an online map for Ikuto (or any dungeon in this game, really) really undermines just how awful this game can be at points. I like it, but parts of Phantasy Star 2 are absolutely loathsome, doing things that gamers wouldn't let any other game get away with. Granted, I'll play through older JRPGs with absolutely no outside resources, like maps and guides, for a vanilla, out-of-the-box, day-1 experience. I've yet to play 4 though, which I really look forward to playing.

    • @rpg_haven
      @rpg_haven  Год назад

      The game came with maps in the box. I think using them improves the experience, but I also get where you're coming from.
