- While universally considered the series's black sheep, PSIII has a lot going for it.
Developed by Sega, the third entry in this classic series originally released in 1990 and arrived in the West in 1991 as Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom. It has seen several re-releases over the years. Footage in this video is from Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

This was my first Phantasy Star. It was one of my first RPGs - I love it. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but the music still plays in my head regularly.
This game was more or less the first exposure I had to the series, watching my bro play it. He borrowed the Sega Mega Drive from his friend with a bunch of games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sword of Vermillion, E-Swat and probs some others. I didn't remember much but did stick out that you are not playing the same character throughout, suddenly the first main character on throne sporting a moustache. Last year I got that Megadrive collection for the switch and played through PS3 as I had played through PS2 a couple of years prior, with intent to playing through the better regarded half of the series (1 and 4) later. Yeah, the flaws were apparent indeed but I did obviously use the FF functions and other quality of life stuff the collection allows.
What I like the most about this game is the generational structure. Other games have done it too, sooner or later, but I can't think of an earlier example.
I can't either. It was a game ahead of its time for sure.
This game was the second RPG I beat after Phantasy star 2 And I've been haunted ever since by it. There is something very obtuse about a lot of the artistic decisions that elevate the game. The mythical quality of the lore in the back drop of a sci fi story; The odd choices in music, and general feel of the presentation. From time to time i just have to listen to that intro theme. I ran into your review looking for it!
Have you played the unicorn overlord demo? It's about 7 hrs long
Not yet
@@rpg_haven it's pretty fun and does the usually demo save data can be carried over to the main game
When your final boss was in a treasure chest of all things, you know the game was badly rushed and incomplete when it was released.
But it wasn't all bad, there were many good ideas in this game.
This is real funny. I was just thinking for the past week about playing and beating this game.
Hey, have you heard about sand land? Not sure if it's your cup of tea but it looks interesting and it has akira toriyama's art style
Never heard of it, I'll check it out
@@rpg_haven figured as much, not a whole lot of people talking about it. Might be due to it being overshadowed by games like FF7 rebirth and Eiyuden chronicle:Hundred Heroes
BTW, based on your accent: Are you from somewhere around Eastern Kentucky?
I'm not, but I do love Kentucky. I exaggerate my accent for my videos, it helps with my stutter
the game was my first phantasy star game and felt monotonous until i figured out the game mechanics. my main gripe was that the game could randomly glitch random battles into an instant game over on the ntsc north american genesis version i had. phantasy star 4 was the best.
I remember a couple years ago wanting to play this one for being the odd one out but I wasn't in the correct mood to talk to so many NPCs with dubiously translated dialogue to figure out where to go lol. I do want to give it another shot some day. Some day lol.
IMO II is the worst of the four but a lot of people prefer II to III. I love the replay value. Being able to replay an RPG multiple times and get multiple stories was all but unheard back then. One of my biggest disappointments in Dragon Quest V when I finally played it (Sometime after I got my first DS which was after Dragon Quest VI came to the DS because I played that first) was how little impact the marriage choice had. I was expecting something much closer to the kind of impact that choice had in this game.
PS4 is honestly a better game all around.
3 is good, don't get me wrong, but I definitely prefer 4. 4 was the first JRPG I ever played to completion, so I'm definitely biased, too.
I recently finished PS4 and definitely agree
@@rpg_haven Oh man, I look forward to any video you might make about it!
I really like the Phantasy Star series but its a let down to hear III isn’t good. I haven’t been able to play this one yet.
It has a lot of boring gameplay, but it's great for other reasons. I would definitely check it out if you liked the second one
Who tf cares
And in no way is this game difficult. Its tedious. Big difference. Enjoy the idea of fighting tiny chickens or floating microchips. Just awful. Great music tho..
I love the phantasy star series. I still play tbe original every now and then
Part 3 is just awful. Better than Part 2?? You aren't a serious person. Part 3 is awful. Great sound and music. Broken and useless magic system. Ridiculous enemy sprites. Boring story and quests. Back and forth between the same places. Despite the illusion of choice and storyline branches the game is pretty much identical regardless of your choices. Part 4 is better. Part 2 is infinitely better. Part 1 is better than all 3 sequels. Play Part 1. Part 2 if you like punishment. Part 4 for a cake walk end to tne series. Part 3 if you absolutely must. and tne nonsense story and plot are a perfect representation of a rush job of a sequel that was finished in a rush job just to bring something to market. A d why did they continue this trash premise and storyline for the online versions?? Wtf? So weak. Zero potential. Probably the biggest mistake sega ever put forward not called 32x.
I don't think I said it was better than part 2. Phantasy Star II is my favorite game in the series
I really wanted to get into Phantasy Star II after beating the first game since I absolutely loved that game. However, I quit as the Dungeons just seemed way to confusing and frustrating. Instead I played PSIII and while not nearly as good as the first game, I still liked. Now I wanna try PSIV as well but really want to play the 2nd game first but I have no idea how i should find the patience for that🫠
I love PSII. You could use online maps-that's what I did. It makes the dungeon crawling fun instead of annoying
@@rpg_havenYeah, although i do wish that there was a version of PS2 with an ingame map like the switch version of PS1
