She has done it again! The Long Tomorrow by Leigh Brackett Review
There's a fantasy baseball crossover book I read as a kid by the author Michael Chabon called Summerland. From what I can remember this kid travelled to some fantasy realm to play baseball or something? As a baseball obsessed youth I really enjoyed it
Summerland is a 2002 fantasy young adult novel by American writer Michael Chabon. It is about young children who save the world from destruction by playing baseball, the central theme and symbol throughout the novel
I like Michael Chabon. I will check it out!
@@JosephReadsBooks it’s def for a younger audience but still was dun
Fun
Excellent Joseph!!! You da goat
Thank you!
The background and history of baseball remains the strangest in all of sports.
Yes it does. The history of baseball is what hooked me the most.
The Bullpen Gospels is one of the best baseball books I’ve read. I would be crying from laughter. It’s a lot like ball four but a little more modern.
Thanks for the recommendation. I will add it to my wishlist!
I love the idea! please do more of these
I will do my best! The reading takes a lot of time and research(this took about a year to fit everything in alongside my other reading goals). I do want to make more like this in the future.
I would recommend "The Best Team Money Can Buy" by Molly Knight. It follows The Dodgers during the wild McCourt into Guggenheim Group time period and has really good inside the locker room type views.
Great video, and I do occasionally gravitate to Sports Nonfiction, so I’ll take these suggestions to heart. I’m gonna recommend some fiction that deals in baseball: The great Fantasy novel centered on baseball is Brittle Innings, by Michael Bishop. It’s my favourite book by him (so far), and it’s loaded with baseball and…surprises. There’s also The Iowa Baseball Confederacy, by W. P. Kinsella. Someone recommended a different Kinsella novel to me years ago, but, at the bookstore, I got lured to Iowa Baseball Confederacy instead, precisely because of its Fantasy elements. Other baseball fictions by Kinsella (that I have not read) are Shoeless Joe, and The Thrill of the Grass (but I don’t know if they are Fantasy stories). Baseball-related Crime & Mystery fiction that I have read: My favourite is Wild Pitch, by A. B. Guthrie Jr.. Not featuring the Major Leagues, but if that doesn’t matter, it’s still heavy into baseball. And murder! There’s also For Murder I Charge More, by Frank McAuliffe. This book is actually four novellas, the best one maybe being the baseball-centric one. The tone is humorous and playful. The only other Crime & Mystery book I can think of is Problems Solved, by Bill Pronzini and Barry N. Malzberg. Short stories. Lots of baseball content, obviously based on a love of the game, worked into many of the stories (especially in the, uh, late innings). Speaking of gay baseball players, the only General Fiction novel I read is called The Dreyfus Affair, by Peter Lefcourt. I know, years ago, Betty Thomas was all set to do a film version, but it didn’t happen. I very much enjoyed the book, though. That’s all I got! If it was Cricket, no Baseball, gosh could I recommend some early Wodehouse! Meanwhile, baseball fiction, even genre fiction, does go a bit beyond The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
These are wonderful recommendations. Thank you! I also enjoy Cricket so I'm open to recommendations.
So I have a co-worker who is a baseball fanatic. He's always talking about baseball and baseball books and recommended both Moneyball and Ball Four. Good video Joseph!
Thanks!
My husband recommends The Natural by Bernard Malamud. Considering he doesn’t read much, especially fiction, I’d take his recommendation seriously. Haha!
I have read it! Back when my channel was new I made a review of it. ruclips.net/video/BCMBTDLa6sM/видео.htmlsi=lto0t_rcw-3fWvdJ The book is so strange. It is somehow wonderfully written and almost unreadable.
@@JosephReadsBooks I’m a fake fan. 😭
@@SheWasOnlyEvie until recently it had like 19 views. I just assume no one has seen it 😂
OOPS! Missed the mark Bubba... Frost Giant's Daughter was the first written. Phoenix on the Sword was 1st published story. (FGD was not published in REH's lifetime because an attempted rape was plot's core.) Kudo's for the effort and your take upon the subject offered of "Murder Hobo".
What a great idea! Can you edit the video title? In think there might be people out there searching for "Baseball Books". A while back I read several mysteries by Troy Soos "Murder at Fenway Park", "Murder at Wrigley field"..... They're not too bad as I recall and easy reads. I think Moneyball was the first digital book that I ever bought for Kindle. I don't remember it so much now because I watch the movie every year. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the suggestion! I will add "baseball books" to the tags(it is a hidden thing) which should help people find it. I need to look into those baseball mysteries.
So I looked up the Troy Soos novels. It is a perfect recommendation! A handful of the are free on Audible, including your recommendations. He is a contributor to SABR(a historical Baseball group). I think I have books he helped write on the history of turn of the century baseball. My wife and I are going to read "Murder st Fenway Park" together.
You’re talking about baseball, but you’re not wearing Red Sox gear. This is confusing.
I do talk about a former Red Sox player(Kevin Youklis) in the video. Does that help reduce the confusion? 😂
Awww such a cute daughter story about how she’s looking out for Henry books for you. Wow I can’t believe how many books Glen Cook wrote-I love your project to finish out his oeuvre 💪
According to my research Glen Cook wrote 52 books. Which is incredible considering he worked a full time job at GM for his entire adult life. I'm looking forward to finishing it but I know I'm going to be sad knowing I have read it all. But then I get to look forward to re-reads for the rest of my life.
I feel the same way about DNFs. Ive DNFd more books than ever before this year, and it feels bad at first but if its not doing anything for me its just a waste of time. theres so much out there that Im interested in, theres no reason to keep going with something thats not working
Exactly. Life is too short for that nonsense. Plus my shelves full of unread books are always watching me 👀.
There are 7 Thin Man movies starring William Powell and Myrna Loy that are slay! You’ll thank me later. I have watched them all multiple times. Great video! Thanks.
I will check those out! I filmed the baseball video and the audio messed up halfway through 😭. So I'm filming it again tomorrow! (which is fine with me I wanted to improve it anyways).
One of my favorite series, very entertaining and interesting read
I have really enjoyed the series so far(I'm on book 10 now).
Awesome video brother. I bought Funny Story for my wife and month back and she just finished it. I might give it a go. The Power of the Dog was an absolute banger. Cheers.
Thank you! Funny Story is great. Emily Henry is a fantastic writer. I just finished her book Happy Place and I'm all in now. I plan on reading one of books every few months until I have read them all. Power of the Dog was THE banger! It is staying strong as my book of the year. I would overwhelmed and overjoyed if I found something that could unseat it.
Joseph your energy is so fun and infectious, great video
Thank you!
Happy Place, yaaaaaaaaaas!
It is my favorite Emily Henry book so far. To avoid burnout I will read one every two or three months until I have read them all.
Alright you’ve sold me on Happy Place! So glad you enjoyed Red Rising man, can’t wait to see what you think of the later books!
Red Rising is so damn good! I hope you enjoy Happy Place!
I remember Hammett from high school. Been meaning to reread them. Will you read the Maltese falcon?
Yes. Maltese Falcon and Red Harvest are both in the running for my next Hammett read.
Dude loved your video
Thank you so much!
Yasssssssssss binging the Red Rising trilogy let’s goooooooooo. I did the same thing and just ate em up whole. Haven’t continued on yet waiting for that last book to be ready. Sorry to hear Arbonne isn’t hitting it out of the park like it did for me but glad you’re still appreciating aspects of it. Amen on the DNFs!
Arbonne is a very good book and I love quite a few of the characters. I am really excited about the rest of the book. GGK is definitely an amazing writer I will keep reading.
@@JosephReadsBooks love to hear it-enjoy the rest!
Glen Cook books! Glen Cookbooks! 😂 A Song for Arbonne is one of my faves!!! Wow, now I have questions for you about Happy Place. Maybe I missed clues since I listened to the audiobook, but I kind of felt like some of the conflicts were shoehorned in toward the end. You said there were clues early on, so maybe I just missed details. Excited for Lonesome Dove!
I listened to Happy Place as well. (Happy Place spoilers below for anyone reading this) The big one you can see early is the conflict between Cloe and Sabrina. It starts pretty early in the book. The first time it happened I thought she(Cloe) was being crabby but by the middle of the book I knew there was going to be a blow up. Maybe the "shoehorning" was just good enough to fool me 😂. I would have to dig around for the other stuff. I'm excited to read it again(probably when my wife finally reads it) and take notes.
@@JosephReadsBooks Oh that is a good catch! I think that conflict was set up well. The conflict I didn't see coming was that Harriet was unsatisfied with her job. Was that hinted at early on? She was so committed to it, so it felt like it came out of nowhere to me. I was telling my mom about the story, and she asked a good question: why didn't Wyn and Harriet ever discuss Harriet opening a medical practice in Montana? They need doctors there too. It seemed strange that they didn't consider that or open up any discussion about those plans since they were engaged. 🤷♀
The job thing is kind of odd. I thought the same thing about her going to Montana to practice medicine. I think the big hurdle was she couldn't survive residency and didn't want to. I'm not sure gow difficult it is to change residency. As of the end of the book she was still at least 4 years(I looked it up and Nuerosurgery takes 7 years 🤯) away from being a doctor able to practice medicine. She would have to find a new residency, spend at least 3 years in that, then pass the Montana medical board stuff. (Maybe we can get a sequel someday where they are both close to 40 and she realizes she missed out leaving medicine behind. Lots of drama there! 😂) That did kind of come out of nowhere but maybe she did say she had been going through the motions for a while. We are getting the story from her POV and she seemed pretty delusional(desperate to succeed) when it came to her residency. Wyn saw what it was doing to her but she kept telling him it was going fine 🤷. I think you are right about it being too sudden though.
Your DNF rant was on the money. Good video as usual.
Thank you!
Glad Red Rising worked for you, its not a favourite of mine and I'll leave it at that 😅 A Song for Arbonne is one of the few standalones I still have left to read from GGK. I think its safe to say he's my current favourite Fantasy author, and he does need to be read more. There was going to be adaptation of Lions of Al-Rassan but supposedly the script was terrible. Love Lonesome Dove, enjoy! In June I read: *Historical-Fantasy* Children of Earth & Sky / Guy Gavriel Kay - Carried over from May. Loved it. A Brightness Long Ago / Guy Gavriel Kay - My new favourite Kay I've read so far, and a new favourite book of all-time! Book of the Month!!! All the Seas of the World / Guy Gavriel Kay - Pretty good. Glad I read this loose trilogy in publication order. I understand the lukewarm reviews and I seem to have liked it more than most, though my favourite parts were the tie-ins to ABLA, CoE&S, Lions of Al-Rassan and Sarantine Mosaic. *Sci-Fi* Vorkosigan Saga 1: Shards of Honor - Definitely be continuing this series. *Southern Gothic* Child of God / Cormac McCarthy - It was fine, but really creepy at times. For now I NFNed Jonathan Maberry's Patient Zero and Christopher Ruocchio's Howling Dark. They're good, just not what I'm looking for right now. As for what I'm currently reading: *Historical-Fantasy* The Last Light of the Sun / Guy Gavriel Kay - Kay's re-imagining of the Viking invasions of King Alfred's England, its really good so far. *Sci-Fi* Cloud Atlas / David Mitchell - Still early days yet but I haven't a clue wtf is going on. *Thriller* Winter of Frankie Machine / Don Winslow - Really good so far.
I really enjoyed Shards of Honor. Lions will be my next GGK read(unless I find another book of his in my local book shop). You had a great June too!
@@JosephReadsBooks Lions is top 3 GGK for me easily, alongside Under Heaven.
An eclectic mix and a fun month all in all. Glad you're enjoying GGK, because you're right, that guy needs to be more widely read.
I'm starting Lonesome Dove as soon as I finish A Song for Arbonne!
Also, speaking of Hugo winners. Want to read Gateway in August?
Yes I do!
Great review Joseph! I just reread this book and o loved it even more! I love ashoks character! I really found the world intriguing! I’m excited to read the rest of the series!
I might read the book again before I get to the rest of the series. I really enjoyed it and now that I know the release date for the final book(March-ish 2025) I can plan accordingly.
@@JosephReadsBooks I thought it end of this year? That’s why I started reading it again.
@@Shaad2321 The final book was so long he had to split it in half. One comes out in the fall and another in the Spring.
I have had a similar experience to you I realized one day that I'd read quite a lot of Hugo and nebula award winners For best novel and I decided that I would just complete the whole list at least as many as I can get on audio Now I have about 20 to go in each list
That is amazing! You are way ahead of me. I listen to a lot of audiobooks as well. Do you some favorites from the lists? Maybe something a lot of people have forgotten about.
Timescape by Gregory Benford, Star Tide Rising by David Brin And the speed of dark by Elizabeth Moon Are allexcellent books that are a little bit lesser known
@@bookishmartin Thanks! I will keep an eye out for them.
Delany is scum.
Him being a terrible human being may have expedited me dropping Babel-17 like a bad habit 😂
My impression is that Hugo winners are often considered to be quite good for a reason. But when looking at the other candidates, it’s a reminder that in hindsight no award is comprehensive.
That is very true.
I haven't paid attention to the Hugos in 10+ years and going, lol. Nice to hear bullshit's a part of it's heritage and not just a recent development, not that I needed my decision reinforced. The only genre award I keep up with is the World Fantasy Award, I've been reading the novel nominees every year for the last couple and they're always some of the most fascinating books I pick up in that year. The backlist also has some incredible stuff. The 2024 nominees should be announced soon, actually . . . .
The Hugos have been a shit show in different ways throughout their history. At one point the New Wave SF authors got blocked from winning by the SF "Old Guard" which probably stagnated the genre in popular culture for a decade. I will have to keep an eye out for some stuff from the World Fantasy Awards.
@@JosephReadsBooks damn. I stopped paying attention around 2014 when there was all that sad puppy drama and half the Interwebz screaming at the other on Twitter. The toxicity in that fandom on both sides was too rich for my blood, lol. If you're curious, one of the first videos I actually made was covering the 2023 WFA nominees, it'll give you an idea of how varied and curious the books that appear on that shortlist typically are
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I will check that video out before bed 😁. When the sad puppies stuff happened is around the time I stopped following new releases in SF/F. I just crawled into a hole and read whatever I wanted(mostly Brandon Sanderson 😂).
I think if you win a Hugo, no matter what, you should be proud, it's an honor. But, if you don't win, or a book you like that didn't win, you shouldn't be worried about it. That was a lot of commas.
I totally agree.
@@JosephReadsBooks You agree that was a lot of commas? or the first part. 😂
Both 😂.
I’ve learned during my reading journey that I most definitely do not like classic sci-fi. Edit:Dune trilogy doesn’t count lol.
A lot of it is definitely an acquired taste.
God Emperor of Dune is my favorite Dune book 😎
@@JosephReadsBooks really? I hear it kind of goes off the rails after CoD. I could be persuaded to continue.
I think God Emperor is worth trying. It shows you what Leto had to do to follow the "Golden Path" that Paul was too afraid/too weak to go down.
Howard was a friend of Lovecraft.
I know. They wrote some interesting letters to one another. I wish someone would publish a collection of them.
The Black Company is one my favorites of all time! What are your thoughts on Instrumentalities of The Night? It was set up to be his best work but his publisher called it quits after the fourth book, sadly.
I have not read the series yet. I'm looking forward to starting it in a few months.
You might have pushed me over the edge into reading Red Rising.
You just need to make sure you give the series a chance beyond book one. If you read Golden Son(book 2)and still aren't into it then the series might not be for you. I just happened to be locked in halfway through book one.
Great video man. I really need to check out The Power of the Dog. I'm sold, let me know when you're going to read The Dragon Never Sleeps! Peak Glen Cook sounds interesting to check out to say the least.
I will definitely let you know when I plan on reading The Dragon Never Sleeps. When I make a "Defining the Genre" about grimdark I will be including The Power of the Dog. It is intense!
@@JosephReadsBooks Somehow not surprised by that, I'm getting Sicario vibes from the way people talk about it, so definitely need to get to it soon.
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels it has all of the Sicario vibes.
More like Mid Year Celebration Tag 🥳
I don't know why it is called a Freakout tag. It has been a good year so far 🎉
It brings me so much joy that you liked The Power of the Dog so much! My campaign for this books continues 😂 I was also surprised by how much I loved Emily Henry the first time I picked up one of her books haha I love that Happy Place was a Father’s Day present (sort of), that’s so cute Also yesss for Pierce Brown 🔥 you’ve read some bangers!
So far I have really enjoyed all your book recommendations(and books you really like). No pressure when it comes to keeping the streak alive! 😂
Can't wait to pick up Power of the Dog. Yolanda and Carlos have been a huge part in me picking Crime fiction back up again after a decade.
They have reinforced my love of the genre. They are the best!
Ok, you’re sucking me in on Power of the Dog Joseph!
It is incredible. I am worried that I read my book of the year way too early 😭.
Wonderful answers to the Mid Year Freakout tag! Congrats on your video blowing up! I’ve only read a tiny bit of Conan and need to revisit Howard someday. I read Happy Place this last month, and while I had some nitpicks, I agree that Emily Henry is a very talented writer. Hooray for reviews!
Thank you! If you want to read more Howard I recommend avoiding Solomon Kane(I read them all and they are not great). I'm going to read some of Howard's boxing stories next. His skill at writing action scenes should translate to boxing well. Even if Happy Place is half as good as Funny Story it will blow me away 😂. My next video is a review/reaction to everything that was nominated for the 1964 Hugo Awards(don't tell anyone 🤫). I read them all on a whim.
Nice that you young kids are finally discovering Conan!
Conan is the best! I'm sad that it took me as long as it did to finally read the stories but I now get to enjoy them for the rest of my life!
@@JosephReadsBooks You got it!
A hardcover of the Han Solo Trilogy would be amazing! Don't feel too bad about it though, I managed to get my hands on all 3 from HPB on clearance for $1-2 a piece in paperback. I picked them up on a whim and was happy that I did!
I am compelled to buy books. So Ioght as well buy a few for people I care about. You have been warned! 😂
You should do a video about your favorite baseball books. Not sure how much interest there would be, but I'd like to see it, and really that's all that matters to me!
I can do that. I will add it to my "video ideas list".
I’ve read Julian May’s Exiles series a couple of times and it’s a very enjoyable read indeed. I hope you enjoy it.
I think I will. It has an awesome premise.
Sounds like you had a great vacation indeed, lol. A Song for Arbonne is a great starting place with GGK - when you finally get to him, you're going to want to read ALL his stuff, definitely. Thomas Covenant wasn't so bad, the MC is a scumbag and does some depraved stuff, but it's not without purpose - it makes an impact on the story in significant ways. Definitely worth the try. I like it because you have the traditional Big Bad Evil of Tolkien-flavored fantasy contrasted next to TC and you have to decide which one's worse, which can be tough.
I'm very excited to finally get to GGK and you have sold me on moving TC up my TBR(I still have no idea when I will finally start the series though 😅).
The background on Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman is a crazy. Miller sort of finished it, sent it to Terry Bisson to finish, then killed himself. Miller unfortunately had a very troubled life and struggled with depression. I haven't read it but I'm curious, maybe someday.
I read about that while I was researching the book. It is such a sad story. I hope it isn't as bad as everyone says.
