Posted on multiple channels. June on the Range update. Finished two books so far. ‘Heller With a Gun’ by Louis L’Amour - Fun, fast paced story about a man who follows a theatre troupe across the wilderness after he becomes convinced the troupe’s guide is up to no good. The characters were interesting and the story went off in a couple unexpected directions. 7/10 - recommended. ‘The Gun Fight’ by Richard Matheson - Damn. This is a tough one. Take a ridiculous circumstance, mix in overbearing parental figures and a total lack of reasonableness and you have the basis for one of the most memorable books I’ve ever read. The story of an ex-Ranger and a young man pushed into a potentially deadly situation by a lie told by a young girl to make her fiancé jealous. Reading this, I went from ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ exasperation to ‘please stop this’ frustration to gut-wrenching anticipation, and finally, to well…I don’t want to give away the ending. 9/10 - if you haven’t read Matheson, you should.
I did June on the range last year and had a great time, this year i have lined up: L. Lamour - Showdown at Yellow Bute Z.Grey - Wilderness Trek JT Edson - The Cow Thieves A Hilleman - World Chase me Down B Swiggs - Blood in the Dust
If you like the fun of Sword & Sorcery stories, and if you like Clint Eastwood westerns, I think you'd love George G. Gilman's 'Edge' series. They're pulpy, short, violent westerns from the '70s, don't take themselves too seriously and are a ton of fun to read.
Thanks! I ended up buying a hat and to justify the purchase for Halloween this year I will probably be Dusty (George Strait) from the movie Pure Country. Pony tail and all 😂. I like westerns and I want to really spend some time with them so I can see if I love them.
I read Destry Rides Again this morning. It was a ton of fun! I'm taking the Elmore Leonard book with me as my vacation read in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm doing - Desert Gold (Grey), Heller With a Gun (L'Amour), The Gun Fight (Richard Matheson), and something by Elmore Leonard, Larry McMurtry (NOT Lonesome Dove), or Don Coldsmith. I usually have Westerns in my rotation, but it will be fun to participate in this event.
'Well I'll be', I've never heard of June on the Range!! I have just under 200 pages left of Lonesome Dove (it is a chonker!), so I'm a tad early to the party 'gosh dernit'! I do have Streets of Laredo, but think I will save that for next June. I did pick up Hondo and a few other Louis L'amour books at a thrift awhile back so, I'll probably just read Hondo to feel like I'm taking part lol. Typically a sci-fi / fantasy reader and have Empire of Silence slated next and really looking forward to it! Anyway, enjoy your reads!
Any western counts for June on the Range! I hope you enjoy Empire of Silence! I read it in January and really liked it. I recommended it to my mom she went through the entire series in less than month 🤯.
🤠

Thanks for the update!
I finished Destry Rides Again by Max Brand and I'm almost done with Last Stand at Papago Wells by Louis L'Amour.
I am really wanting to start Lonesome Dove next month as well. Happy reading!
If you do then you picked the right month!
I'm really hoping I can fit it into the second half of the month.

First of all, amazing hat. Sounds like a fun reading challenge to switch things up!

"Hombre" is good, you weren't led astray there - but "Valdez is Coming" is even better!

For a less familiar writer who is really good, you might try The Time it Never Rained by Elmer Kelton!
I wonder if David Gemmells post apocalyptic/fantasy western “Wolf in Shadow” would be ok. I reckon I’d bend the rules to get it in. 😊
I'll allow it 🤠
Hmm maybe i'll pick up an adventure novel by Emilio Salgari, the grandfather of spaghetti western, for june.

If you want to read comics I sugest Six gun, Jonah Hex, Ec Westerns.
Some Western comics might be a good pallette cleanser between books.
