Good on you for calling out the thief! That irritates me more than a little. The "Friends of the Library" sale is all I'd be interested in I think because of the resellers. I'm going to have to check on the Frankenstein editions. I have a really nice copy somewhere. I'll dig it out and see what I have. Nice book haul.

I'm counting down the days until the next "friends of the Library" sale.
I think I will save Frankenstein for spooky season but I'm really looking forward to it.

The differences in the original Frankenstein and the revised text of 1831 are significant. The later version was the most common one available for a long time. I highly recommend the 200th anniversary edition. It contains the original text and also all the 1831 variations. It is fully annotated and illustrated. I consider it absolutely essential.

    Great stuff, Joseph!
My toleration for resellers varies on how rude or obnoxious they might be. Theft by retagging is right out! Good on you for nixing the mumbling theif!

A lot of resellers are fine but the bad apples ruin the bunch.

@@JosephReadsBooks Also, love your opinion on the "news" . . .great haul. Especially for find so many in their natural habitat. Naval / Maritme fiction is one of my favorite breaks from SF. Just got Shackleton's Voyage and one about Captain Blood.

Awesome haul. Our library sale is coming up soon and I'm excited. Last year's was my first.
On the news: that's known at Gell-Mann Amnesia. Super helpful concept.

Gell-Mann Amnesia is fascinating. I love that Michael Crichton is responsible for giving it a name. Thanks for the new rabbit hole I will spend too much time in 😂.

I paid for my books and sat in the lobby and took deep breaths. I was fired up.
Hopefully I spooked him enough that he won't try it again. I will be watching 👀.

Nice story, I'd probably do the same. I've been meaning to read Frankenstein as well, might wait till spooky season though. I think what you have by Pohl there is the first 4 books in the Heechee Saga, there is a collection of short stories called Gateway Trip and a 5th book he wrote later on but I think you have the main books. I plan on reading Gateway soon and will probably read all the sequels as well. Great haul, cheers.

Frankenstein for spooky season is a good idea.
I will try and keep an eye out for when you start Gateway. I might try and join you.

Who try’s to scam a library? Every time: resellers.
The profit margins are so slim that otherwise decent people will compromise their values just to earn $3.

    • @JosephReadsBooks
      @JosephReadsBooks  Месяц назад

I know why they do it but it is an exercise in futility.
Charities that don't need to make a profit sell books at a loss on ebay all day, every day.
Individual resellers need to stick to high profit margin books if they want to make any money. The problem with that is it requires effort beyond scanning and grabbing.

That's a good haul. That guy's a scumbag, as if libraries don't have enough trouble staying afloat.
That Michael J. Sullivan can definitely be read without prior knowledge of any of his series, and even though it's first in a trilogy it's basically a standalone - it's one of three books that cover 3 different characters over the span of a few centuries that are iconic in the mythos of his shared world. Honestly not sure how you'll like it, hopefully it turns out good for you!
I didn't even know those Penguin Classics came in hardcover! Or is that part of the reinforcement treatment, do you know?
Man you're just reminding me of stuff I want to try sooner or later over this entire video - Modesitt, Alan Moore, Cherryh (I have her Russian Stories which I'm hopefully starting in another week or two!)

I'm happy to hear the Michael J Sullivan book was a good pick up. I'm excited about starting a new author that I know nothing about.
That Penguin Classic is a rebound paperback. The company that does it is called Perma-Bound. I think the easiest way to get them is at library sales. (I am now going to check ebay when I'm done writing this 😂)
I love Modesitt's Saga of Recluse. A lot of the novels are the basic hero's journey but I really enjoy the worldbuilding. I want to start reading them again. It has been about 15 years since I read one 🤯.
