But if I keep my library holds under control, how will I get the weekly workout? The one where I walk to the library thinking I'm picking up two books, and then have to haul a stack of 15 home? 😂 🤣

Also if doing this for Kindle books, when you get a hold in, before checking it out you have the option of pushing off your hold by 7, 14, or 21 days - while not losig your place in line - so that if you, say put 14 days, even for a super-popular book once that 14 days hits, the next copy that comes in goes to you. I love it.

Haha, this is such a 'me' problem. I put too many books on hold all the time (20, because that is my library's limit) and they almost always end up arriving at once, no matter whether I was first in the queue or fiftieth. I have got a little bit better about using the "suspend hold" feature though, so it's nice to hear someone else talking about that. The worst thing is when I think I have a reading order sorted out and then someone puts a hold on a book that I thought I would be able to renew :')

Agreeeeeed. I get so stressed when I suddenly realize I don't have any more holds when I thought I had like 2 renewals left 😩

I do this with Kindle books, always have too many good ones pop up at the same time. One great thing about doing it via Kindle, is that if there IS another hold and you can't renew, but say you're close to finishing, you simply shut the wi-fi off on your Kindle, and that book can''t be removed (even though the next person on the list WILL get theirs, as the library technically does take it back), until the wi-fi is turned back on, giving you time to finish the book.

@@rinceyreads It is an extremely unscientific formula based in how many hours I might have in a given week and how much I have to get done over the weekend, divided by how much I actually want to read that book forecasted into the future and weighted against the number of people ahead of me in the list and how many weeks they will get plus up to two renewals. Plus some speaking into the universe for other people on the list ahead of me to hurry up. Much science. Much inaccuracy.

This is such a good idea!! I never even thought about suspending my holds for that long but I’m going to start! That should relieve some of the stress about too many holds coming in at once. Also, I love the hobo weeks too.

Unhaul tip: use the library!!! Stick a “donation” post it on the books and stick it into the drop box. They’ll either use it in the library catalogue OR the librarians get super excited about the free books and often low key fight over them 😂😂😂

This is such a great idea! I've suspended holds before but never in such a planned and meticulous way. And I already have a Trello board to keep track of my library (and other) books that I have checked out, on hold, am reading, etc., so I'm definitely the kind of nerd who would find this useful. 😆

    • @rinceyreads

@@rinceyreads It works so much better for me than just keeping one list of due dates! I have separate columns for currently reading, queue (both for books I think I might want to read next and books I have some kind of group/buddy read plan for), checked out, on hold, read, to check out, and returned (for books I didn't read and don't plan to check out again, at least not in the near future). I use tags to indicate which library I have a book checked out from/on hold with, if it's an ebook or audiobook, if it's a book I can't renew, if it's ready to pick up or return, and for holds that are paused (in which case I put the date it will un-pause as the due date). It sounds kind of complicated, but I've added elements over time as I thought they might be useful, and it works really well for me! -This is definitely the nerdiest comment I've made in a while.-

Loved this video and great tips! I have definitely struggled with getting a bunch of holds all at once. One trick that I use with my library is that instead of putting a title on hold, I can actually put it on a setting called "for later". Then it puts the book in a "for later" list, but it's not actively being held or ordered for me. Kind of like a TBR, but for "someday". I can easily browse those books whenever I want, and can move them to "on hold" with a single click. Really great for those titles that sound interesting, but I'm not dying to read it right away.

thank you again so much for this advice, i can't say enough about how it's made my library hold so much more manageable! and i think that point about it helping you be more thoughtful of what you're checking out is so true, and i think it's been really helpful for me in terms of spreading books out...especially if i've just read a recommendation list and put 5 books with a similar theme on hold, it's nice to be able to space them apart from each other so i can actually enjoy them if i want to

Thank you for making this video. Like you, I spend a lot of time on my library's website, but I've always ignored the "suspend until" button. I don't know why. Just something I tuned out and stopped consciously seeing a long time ago. Now I'm face-palming, because that feature is exactly what I need. Last week I picked up EIGHT holds all at once, with four library books already at home unread! My library limits each person to 40 holds, and I usually have somewhere around 35.

I do this with Overdrive/Libby too. I basically just request a book as soon as I want to read it and when it becomes available, I have 2 days to check it out or I can suspend it. So if I'm not ready I just suspend it for the maximum days which is 180 days for my library. Then when I am ready I undo the suspension and usually it comes in in a few days after that since I'm still at the top of the list once I do that.

  • @KathyTrithardt

I have the maximum amount of holds my library allows, but most of them are suspended indefinitely. Then I can see when I am the next in line and decide what to get based on that.

That's rough that your library list doesn't organize by date of the hold suspension! Mine does, and it's really helpful when I need to see what I've got upcoming. I use the hold & suspend feature to the max of what I'm allowed - 50 physical & 25 ebook. I prefer ebooks, so that's what I use for all of the reads I'm planning to get to in the next month or two, and the physical ones I use especially for new releases (since the ebook waits would be crazy, crazy long and I'd never be able to put holds on anything else). I hope more people who haven't tried this before at their library give it a shot since it's such a great way of controlling when you get your books in, especially for ones you're not sure when the library itself will have available.

I used to do this, but now my library limits the number of holds we can have to 10. We have a new feature that is a "for later" shelf in the system and I put books I want to read there. When i have space on my hold list, I check my for later shelf to see what I should put in hold next.

Can you do a video on how to request your library purchase books? I’ve made so many requests to my library but they don’t grant them :(

    • @rinceyreads
      @rinceyreads  3 года назад

Pretty sure that depends on your library's budget and priorities with purchases. Your best bet is to talk to a librarian and see if there is anything you can do to help get certain books purchased to their catalog or if you can get them through other libraries in your area
