When you start book 2 you're going to be hooked immediately! Book 1 is the one I liked the least but the others are excellent! I rated book 1 about the same as you.
Against the Loveless World was sooo good but so heartbreaking. I had the same thoughts with My Brilliant Friend. That wasn’t what I would classify as a friendship it felt more like they were siblings. Had this relationship been a familial bond that was challenging to walk away from it would have made more sense to me than just friendship.
