Yes, J. K. Rowling got my generation reading. I am so grateful for that. Never viewed HP as Gothic but you are absolutely right. Did a reread of the series this year and love it as an adult too.
@@amritasengupta5251 Do you talk about the alleged transphobic views? I am aware of the fact, that some people do not agree with her views. But I read her book that was said had transphobic content. In my opinion it has not. I tried to find interviews that confirm the allegations. Didn't find one. So if you like please point me to an interview we're she showed that kind of behavior.
@amritasengupta5251 Can we please stop hating on J.K. Rowling? She said nothing offensive, she did nothing wrong. She is standing up for women and girls. Period.
Ooh yes! I've not read the book (I would like to) - but I've seen the Benjamin Britten opera, which is really atmospheric, and also the film, which was titled 'The Innocents' - also very spooky and chilling. Perhaps one for the Halloween period!
“Gothic without getting totally into horror”, a mystery with a touch of the supernatural. Yes! My favorite genre. I highly recommend The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle (1942) and The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart (1925). For something just a little more “modern”, The People from the Sea (mid 1970s) by Velda Johnston.
I read The house on the strand as a young girl many years ago and it stuck with me. Lately I've been wanting to re-read it but couldn't remember the title, so thank you very much for mentioning this book in your video =)
Love this reading list. I haven't read The House on the Strand and will look that up immediately. Love all the other choices. It's definitely time to re-read The Name of the Rose. Look forward to the overtly gothic/halloween list.
The Name of the Rose is one of my favourites, one of the few books I've re-read. I also love Thomas Hardy but I haven't read Return of the Native yet, something to look forward too!
Just finished reading Dorian Gray for first time. Love Rebecca but haven't read The House on the Strand so will pick up a copy! Was about to start reading Far From the Madding Crowd again but think I'll swap it for Return of the Native for now. And must revisit Jane Eyre again. I usually go for WH. I love your voice and book recommendations, and seeing Tilly again obviously!
I associate Autumn, particularly October, with Ray Bradbury. For some reason, I also associate the season with New England here in the States. Thanks for the ideas. The novel by du Maurier sounds fascinating.
This was a great list. This year, for my Gothtober, I’m finally reading Mysteries of Udolpho. I would add House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I am going to add Thomas Hardy to my TBR.
Another wonderful video Rosamunde! Your outfit is lovely and Tillie is a sweetheart. Must try to read The Name of the Rose again… Please don’t make us wait too long before we hear from you again. You always brighten my dreary days!
Thanks rosamunde. I love to cosy down with a good book in autumn. I thoroughly enjoyed The Name of the Rose not only for it's murder mystery but also for its detailed historical account of life in a medieval monastery. Absolutely fascinating. Another book I really enjoyed was The Alienist by Caleb Carr set in Victorian New York and about the early days of criminal psychology. Tttt (tummy tickles to Tilly) 🐶🐶
Might I suggest "Melmoth the Wanderer" by Charles Maturin? It was quite a slog getting through it, but by the end, wow! Stories inside of stories inside of stories. I've never felt so accomplished as a reader as I did when I finished this book!
Had to pause this when you mentioned 'House on the Strand' to check out my bookshelf as remembered reading it many years ago and wasn't sure if it was one of hers from when i was buying them in paperback or one I'd read from the library. Sure enough i have the copy printed in 1979! No wonder i couldn't remember the storyline 😁
Did you read The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry? For me It has a kind of Gothic atmosphere. Thank you for your recommendations. Greetings from Amsterdam. Marian
Love those earrings! I would recommend The Seance by John Harwood. I found it a few months ago at a thrift store, and it really ticked all the boxes for a gothic novel. Also The Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. Very different books, but both really satisfying reads for me.
My copy of 'The House on the Strand' looks exactly like yours! 😄 "The Name of the Rose" sounds fascinating. After I finish with a collection of short stories by Katherine Mansfield, I'll be digging my heels into Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend" for book club. That will keep me plenty busy this autumn season. 😍 Send Tillie my love and give her a sweet doggie biscuit for me. 🐕
I've recently reread "Northanger Abbey" and found it even more delightful than the first time. Currently enjoying a lot "The keep", by Jennifer Egan. Since I'm still in chapter 4, I'll say it is a promising modern gothic novel. Update: After finishing it up, I can now say that "The keep" is an amazing read. The revival of the gothic genre is just one of the many layers in the story. I strongly recommend it for horror, fantasy, and contemporary fiction readers alike.
It's funny your first book is Northanger Abbey. I am currently reading that and once finished I am going to read Mysteries of Udolpho which is referenced several times in Northanger Abbey.
This was fantastic. Such a lovely list. I've been actually wanting to read The Name of the Rose for the last year, and your beautiful recommendation was exactly what I needed to finally make it a priority this Autumn, so thank you so much for that... I cannot wait for your Harry Potter review. That just totally made my day to know that it's coming. 🙂 Have you read her series written under the Robert Galbraith pseudonym? They very much fit the theme. And I'd love to hear your opinion about them... 🙂 Thank you and happy reading!
Hi Rosamunde, I just found your RUclips channel a few days ago, I love it, While watching one of your videos you mentioned your brother, I have been subscribed to The Prehistory Guys for a few years now, & love watching & learning from Michael & Rupert. I have subscribed to your channel now & I'm looking forward to spending time with you & Tilly. Watching from New Zealand.
Thank you for subscribing and your comment, and welcome to my channel - and I'm really glad to hear you love my brother's channel too! They really do a great job. 🙂
I would like to recommend a dark gothic book I read recently. It’s called Crimson and Bone by Marina Fiorato. Everyone I have given it to has enjoyed it and I think you might to. I would love to know if you ever read it. I really enjoy your videos and have got some great recommendations, so thank you for taking the time to make them.
This is such a great list of recommendations. I'm always up for "creepy" regardless of the time of year. I've been reading gothic mysteries since the late 1960's. I think they were getting me ready for the arrival of Stephen King and his books. LOL. I was always on the lookout for books by Phyllis Whitney and Nora Lofts. I love the Harry Potter series. I judge a book on it's own merit, not the author. Hi to sweet Tillie.
I would add ‘Endless Night’, by Agatha Christie. Your speaking of the unreliable narrator in ‘Gone Girl’ reminded me of that book. Truthfully, you had me at ‘Northanger Abbey’. ❤✌️
Oh, I love these unique ideas! My friend and I lead a Gothic Literature November tag if you're interested in joining. Either way, I'm glad I found your channel.
Ooooh another fantastic one!!!!! Lots of favourites here but GONE GIRL is just such a fantastic read. Have you read SHARP OJECTS?? Another dark and amazing novel by Gillian Flynn. Big Hug for Darling Tillie and thank you as always for these wonderful chats.
Thanks that gave me some nice leads. I have you on my IPad on a side table so I can knit. My cat was here on my lap taking a great interest in your dog! I was wondering what he was thinking as you look quite a lot like me. He really seemed quite perplexed 🥺

Anyone else think The Hound of the Baskervilles was missing from your list? I read this as a young teenager under the covers with a flashlight and when I finished it I was afraid to reach over the edge of the bed to put the book on my nightstand so I slept with it in bed with me. 🙄
Harry Potter will always have a special place in my heart but JK Rowling’s behavior has been truly despicable. I’m very disappointed in how she’s changed over the years. Anyway, there are some really great recommendations here! Lovely video x
@PumpkinMozie Can I ask you why you say her behaviour has been despicable a very harsh word for a woman who donates to many charities Surely people are entitled to have their opinions and if they don't agree with yoursI find it offensive to call her despicable
I recommend Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Excellent!
Yes, I keep hearing about this book - I need to get that on my TBR!
GREAT recommendation!!!
Daphne du Maurier....she's on my list of must reads. Thank you for the reminder.❤

Unfortunately she's ruined HP for me because of her atrocious behavior. 😮😢

If the characters are running about in the halls of a dark castle in their night clothes it's a Gothic novel. Yes, even if the dog's named Fluffy.
