I think if you win a Hugo, no matter what, you should be proud, it's an honor. But, if you don't win, or a book you like that didn't win, you shouldn't be worried about it. That was a lot of commas.

I will do my best! The reading takes a lot of time and research(this took about a year to fit everything in alongside my other reading goals). I do want to make more like this in the future.

My impression is that Hugo winners are often considered to be quite good for a reason. But when looking at the other candidates, it’s a reminder that in hindsight no award is comprehensive.

I haven't paid attention to the Hugos in 10+ years and going, lol. Nice to hear bullshit's a part of it's heritage and not just a recent development, not that I needed my decision reinforced.
The only genre award I keep up with is the World Fantasy Award, I've been reading the novel nominees every year for the last couple and they're always some of the most fascinating books I pick up in that year. The backlist also has some incredible stuff. The 2024 nominees should be announced soon, actually . . . .

The Hugos have been a shit show in different ways throughout their history.
At one point the New Wave SF authors got blocked from winning by the SF "Old Guard" which probably stagnated the genre in popular culture for a decade.
I will have to keep an eye out for some stuff from the World Fantasy Awards.

@@JosephReadsBooks damn. I stopped paying attention around 2014 when there was all that sad puppy drama and half the Interwebz screaming at the other on Twitter. The toxicity in that fandom on both sides was too rich for my blood, lol.
If you're curious, one of the first videos I actually made was covering the 2023 WFA nominees, it'll give you an idea of how varied and curious the books that appear on that shortlist typically are

@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I will check that video out before bed 😁.
When the sad puppies stuff happened is around the time I stopped following new releases in SF/F. I just crawled into a hole and read whatever I wanted(mostly Brandon Sanderson 😂).

I have had a similar experience to you I realized one day that I'd read quite a lot of Hugo and nebula award winners For best novel and I decided that I would just complete the whole list at least as many as I can get on audio Now I have about 20 to go in each list

That is amazing! You are way ahead of me. I listen to a lot of audiobooks as well.
Do you some favorites from the lists? Maybe something a lot of people have forgotten about.

Timescape by Gregory Benford, Star Tide Rising by David Brin And the speed of dark by Elizabeth Moon Are allexcellent books that are a little bit lesser known

I’ve learned during my reading journey that I most definitely do not like classic sci-fi.
    Edit:Dune trilogy doesn’t count lol.

I think God Emperor is worth trying. It shows you what Leto had to do to follow the "Golden Path" that Paul was too afraid/too weak to go down.
