You’ve got a real genuine and cozy vibe to your channel. It feels like I’m literally there listening to you talk about books you love and making recommendations.
You might like the novel, "Black Bottle Man". John W. Campbell Award winner, R.A. MacAvoy said “This book sings, from the first word to the last. It reminds me of the Silver John stories by Wellman.”
I'm from the Great Smokies on the North Carolina side and I've been to the Rockies and the Black Hills and there's a special kind of weird that this place has. I read the Silver John stories beginning in elementary school. The library had a worn out copy of Who Fears the Devil and I was in love. Great video!
Sign me up!! Never looked up how to get a book so fast. I was raised in North Carolina (not in the mountains, but close enough) and lived there from the ages of 7-26 and I love anything to do with horror/fantasy in Appalachia. Fortunately my library has the 1988 short story collection and I just got lucky found an incredibly cheap used copy of The Old Gods Waken to get me started.
I have never heard of these before but I'm super interested in picking them up. I'm originally from North Carolina and always love the supernatural prescribed to the region and how they reflect the struggles of actually living there.
It is heavily influenced by the local Folklore in North Carolina. You can get John the Balladeer new on Amazon(or direct from Valencourt Books) for a reasonable price. It is a good introduction to the series.
Those actually look and sound great. I'll have to pick up that Valancourt edition whenever some wiggle room in the book budget opens up, the stories sound pretty fun even if you're not familiar with the territory. If the price of the Thunderstone book is any indication ($600!) this is definitely a very significant buy as a collector, if you ever decide to part with them!
They are definitely a collector's piece. Fortunately I got to pay retail for my Silver John books. I begged my wife to let me buy them for my birthday last year 😂.
Just stumbled across you and this book. I find myself reading more older stories now adays anyway. I keep looking for things that inspired or came before some of our best modern writiers. I only have your description of this series but now I'm intrigued. If this set is still available next month i might just pick it up because why not?
If the set isn't available you can still get John the Balladeer from Valencourt Books(they sell it on their website and Amazon). It is a collection of all the short fiction about Silver John. You can also check out The Old Gods Waken on audible which is the free for Audible subscribers(at least in the US). It is the first novel in the series and the narration is great. If you check out the series I hope you enjoy it!
Man do I wish I picked up the Complete John Thunstone when it was only $40. It's forever out of my price range now. I do have all the John the Balladeer in hardback. I didn't realize how much they went up in price since I collected them all up.
Everytime I time I see that $40 original price I cry 😭. I really want to buy up all the Frederic Brown stuff from Haffner Press before it is gone for good. Why does everything have to cost money? 😂

Thank you! That is exactly what I want my channel to be. Somewhere cozy where I can talk to everyone about books!

@@JosephReadsBooks You have a good wife 😂
Never heard of this author/stories before, but sounds really interesting.
This is awesome. I had no idea this was being released. I recently bought all the original novels and hardcover, and it was not cheap.
Holy Smoke! That’s amazing!
Now I want to re-read a John the Balladeer story! I'll snap up the next thing I see at the shop-
I get to finally explore all the John the Balladeer short fiction.
Step aside Ho Chi Minh biography!(for a few days) I have some new bed time reading!

@@JosephReadsBooks Really wish they would do a second printing of some of their books. I really do.
Manly Wade Wellman is great! However, I only have one novel of his. This looks like an excellent book to pick up. Good stuff Joseph!
I love Appalachian fiction. I hadn’t heard of these and will definitely check them out.
