As it happens, I'm chipping away at Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser right now, and I do enjoy them. You really notice that Leiber is one of the founding fathers of modern fantasy, especially when it comes to games.
I'm curious about the last two, since they're supposed to be pretty experimental for a fantasy series of that era, which is apparently the reason many readers somewhat dislike them.

I have heard the same thing about the last few.
I'm fine with experimental as long as it is executed well.

It's hard to finish a series. Mostly because there are so many out there and I like to give every author their chance. For every additional book in a series, I could've have started with another author.

      That a good point.
I plan on sitting down and figuring out how many series I have finished as well.
I don't think it is 40 but I hope I have finished a fair amount.

That's the reason I have for not doing rereads.

I enjoyed your video greatly! I do begrudge Martin. He has doubled down on disregarding what made him and had the hubris to say he was better than JRR Tolkien

I didn't know about the Tolkien thing.

@@JosephReadsBooks I am paraphrasing but if I remember correctly he stated that there wasn't enough death or real life consequence in Lord of the rings as well as the tax system was neglected. And he came at it from his spiritual hilltop. . . If memory serves

That was very interesting. I have quite a few unfinished series', but I think all of mine would go on the DNF tier except for Game of Thrones. There's just too much else to read for a slow reader like me, so if I set a series aside it's doubtful that I'm ever going to come back to it unless it wasn't completed. I don't think you mentioned "The Kingkiller Chronicle"? That's another one that I'll read them all again when/if he finishes it.
We used to have a thing at our house where we all would have to pick out books for the others to read (wife and 3 daughters). I had my wife read "Ender's Game" and she loved it. She had me read "Water for Elephants" which was also good. One of my daughters had me read "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and it was great to talk to her about the book as I was going through it (and after). So, you could tell your daughter that she can pick out any book and you have to read it! I thought it was a fun way of interacting. Thanks!

I might give Kingkiller Chronicles a chance if the series is ever completed. I have never read any of them.
Picking out books for one another is a great idea! I will definitely give it a try.
I got my wife to read Ender's game as well and she loved it. Her favorite character was Bean and I told her "well you are in luck, not only is there a sequel dedicated to Bean, he has his own series!".

I read Thieves world back in the early 80's. I must have read or 9 books, but just ran out of steam on them. I read more of the Wild Card books, but also ran out of steam on them as well. With the shared world books there is just a formula to them and it wears me down eventually.
I use to own 5 or 6 of the old Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser paperbacks back in the '80's. I read 5 of them. Did enjoy them a lot and want to reread all of them.
I know you have a lot on your plate, but if you can find Karl Edward Wagner's Kane series I think you would enjoy it. Last I checked they are OOP and expensive. I found Gods in Darkness: The Complete Novels of Kane at a library sale for 50¢. Probably won't get so lucky with the short story collection.

That is my worry when it comes to Thieves' World and Wild Cards. I guess I will just enjoy them until I don't.
Funny that you mention Karl Edward Wagner. I'm currently reading his Kane stories. They are fantastic.
I have a copy of Gods in Darkness that my brother bought me for Christmas.
The easiest way I have found to read his books is on Kindle.
I'm also a big fan of his horror stories.
      Thanks for watching!

5 months. It was one of the reasons I read way less books back in 2020.
You wanna guess the other reason? 😂😭
I went back and checked and I did read a few other books while I worked on them.
I listened to the entire series and read non fantasy stuff in paper.

@@JosephReadsBooks it's tough to recommend precisely because almost every single book is almost some sort of genre shift. the final arc of the series with the faction that starts with L is my favorite of the whole thing.
