I found Wild Cards in the early 90s, and absolutely adore the first book. I read as far as the stuff set in the 80s and gave up on it; I just don't enjoy the ultra dark and gritty Thatcher-ian dystopia stuff.
Very happy to see WC getting more exposure, and I have only one question; How did you NOT mention The Great And Powerful Turtle?! 🤯
I love him so much. But I'm a sucker for a telekinetic character.

I didn't want to spoil him. His story is the one I was alluding to when I talked about Martin's ability to gut punch you with wonderful writing.
The Turtle is one of my favorite heroes in the series.

I’d seen these on shelves. I’m not huge on short stories, but you’ve peaked my interest for sure.

I promised myself that I would boycott Martin for not finishing what he started. I came to Martin through the book GoT when the 2nd in the series was published and fell in love. He broke my heart. He then talked about where Tolkein got it "wrong." Authors are oft ego maniacs and I don't judge him for his critique. I think he had some points that are valid. I don't think the points matter tho; when compared to LotR as a whole. I don't think he should be critiquing a series as wrong until he finishes what he started and actually knows what it takes to do so. I don't think I will break my boycott atm but; you forced me to reconsider. I know that I have a resentment.

I understand where you are coming from.
I read A Song of Ice and Fire back in 2008 and never went back to the series.
I don't know if it will ever be done but the way the series is written I don't think it needs an "ending". It reads more like historical fiction than it does fantasy. You are just following people as they live through the events in Westeros. Even if the series was abandoned entirely we still have their journey which is the reason I read the series. I don't need an ending.
I'm not trying to make excuses for GRRM, I'm just sharing how I feel about the series.
When it comes to his thoughts on the Lord of the Rings I don't have anything to say. I read them once a long time ago and I don't have an interest in reading them again.
I will read The Hobbit all day though. I love that book.

This actually sounds pretty crazy. I'll try them out sometime! The whole mosaic novel concept sounds crazy, imagine the writing/editing chops it would take to be able to take so many disparate stories and form a novel out of them. I know there's 20+ books, is the entire thing set up as sequential trilogies? That would be pretty good.
Update: went to add the first on GR and saw it's organized into a series of duologies, trilogies and quartets up to at least the 25th book

Have you checked out Thieves' World? It is the first combined world. Very pulp in feel, set in a fantasy world.. Edited by the late great Robert Lynn Asprin.

I have read the first 4 Thieves World collections. I have enjoyed them quite a bit.
They were one of the inspirations for Wild Cards.

I troll people by saying I want more Wild Cards instead of Winds of Winter 😂.
Another great book from Martin is Fevre Dream. It is vampires on a Mississippi steamboat in the 1850s. It is super intense.

I actually prefer these to ASoIaF, although I stalled out on later books (stopped at Lowball I think?) since most of the characters I loved are dead or sidelined by that point.
