useful thoughts, appreciated. if you're up for it, i'd highly value a video on defending some of the common blockstrings geifs encounter, especially w/ chars that have longer ones like rashid and jamie, or characters i see too rarely to get good practice on like dj or kim. sure, that info's out there if i were to hunt down good character guides for each char and find the sections in them about strings, but it'd be nice if someone would aggregate that info from a defensive perspective. watched a vid the other day about insta-air-spding the floaty-hop-mixup part of rashid's common blockstrings, that was pretty funny even if it might be too hard to work into common gameplay. i imagine backing off tonado is bad vs competent rashids, but down where i am, if i have enough room behind me, it's not too hard to back off so fast and far that it ends up behind them and they can't even kick it at me, it just dissipates. and lastly, a random but heartfelt question: any time i watch gameplay of masters, i never see master geifs getting hit with the take-a-smokebreak combos that i get hit with. my presumption is that better players don't dump their resources all at once like the players i face do, but there's nothing that takes the taste out of my mouth for this game like watching 12 seconds tick off the gameclock while i'm not allowed to do anything (i wanted to like dbfz so much, but it's 10x worse). what's more, these forever-long sequences don't come from anything super-bad on my part equivalent to a whiffed dp, but feel like they happen off of any stray hit. what am i doing wrong here, or is it just a phenomenon of the rank i'm currently at?

6:29 - I also believe in walking forward a little bit and parrying the tornado. Most rashid's dash after popping level two which allows you to force the tornado to reach you first and use parry to get your meter back. After that you basically decide if you want to tech/take the throw or drive revearsal the mix up.

About the Danny roud, i think super level 2 not holding the button and throw rashid to the corner is better, u can level 1 if rashid try to escape by jumping or lariat or spd light (sorry about my bad english)

in ranked if someone starts just walking back to be annoying, I just stand still and crouch block. in casual, I just go the bathroom or the kitchen to get some tea.

I think we need to play more lame than ever this season, keep the corner, keep the drive bar and being patient. Nice video as always!

The disparity between SA and EVO prize is ridiculous but no one expect EVO to pay that but $20K with all the sponsors involved is a joke, maybe spend a few thousands less in advertising to boot the prize pot or force sponsors to directly donate toward the prize pot. As it stands, it looks like people behind EVO are racking in the money but not sharing it with the people that make the event aka the players.

I learned a little Spanish and I learned a little about the matchup (even though I already knew these were free for Jamie and Lily). These may be worse than Gief vs JP or Dhalsim.

From what I remember a lot of the Giefs ran into Lilys. Even tho I think you could make a valid argument for Gief in the top 7-10 character range he still gets destroyed by Lily

From the latest patch, the dev team has been not only doing great with the patches, but also way more open about it then before, we could use a more thorough explanation about it with actual frame data and hitboxes. Terry's uncanny valley ass face aside, the game is going on a great direction, and I can't wait to what Kobayan and you'll be cooking in the future!

am i odd for not giving a huge f about tournament representation? all those chars listed in the unrepresented sections are characters i play vs all day down in the midcard, whereas i almost never see a deejay (of course, when i DO see a deejay, he's cracked and that's hard to learn from). this list just doesn't have a lot to do with how i experience the game. gief's gameplay feels pretty much just like what i was looking for before i even tried the game, and i have fun. i enjoy getting better, but i ain't on a mission to dominate the world. i'd probably resent all the bandwagoners if gief did become top tier.

Season 2 gief is weird, he looks better but he has the same weakness than season 1 but with some brain dead stuff like my beloved knee. And kobayan robed the topanga league with jump cancel spd and everybody keeps trying to throw him... idk why!

In evo all gief lost in Livestream, even itazan lost to lili and jamie😢 And there are two types of Zangief, regular geif and kobayan geif which can consistently hit spd at frame 6 on wake up, and the difference is huge as cammy without od dp and cammy with od dp.

practicing for a bigger prize is not a bad idea......however saudi has a record of not paying players, remember the qudans incident......now, im not sure if these are the same guys....i just remember qudans not getting paid everytime i hear about a tournament in saudi

People put Zangief on top tier because what he gets when he gets in....WHEN and IF he gets in , that's not top tier for me

Gief matchup tier list is horrible, but he still beats the majority of top tiers 6:4.

A few notes from the matchup of lily from a fellow zangief player the neutral game has to change a bit in this instance as Zangief cannot get in as easy and lily can counter alot of his neutral buttons before his buttons can land to counter the Condor wind hit you can use drive impact but the important part is knowing when to use it and when they using the empty Condor Wind to bait you into a reverse drive impact using drive reversal in the long run against Condor spire can drain you completely and quickly so the only alternative is using a spaced Armor HP and letting go as the first hit connects alternaively if you have the reflexes you can air spd the normal one, windstock and EX windstock version can only countered using lariat but each of these methods needs a understanding of the correct timing also reactions gotta be on point

Zangief needs a horizental special move ... similar to green hand and nerf his damage a bit .. thats gonna balance lots of things out relatedto specific characters' matchups. The horizental move should not give oki at all and bounces off the wall to lose the corner pressure. Otherwise zangief is gonna be OP.

I'd love to see some review of SimpleTricks's run since I believe he made it the furthest out of any zangief at Evo. He 2-0d Smug and ChrisCCH. Also yeah this matchup is trash and Chakotay played great. Itabashi did drop a lot of combos/opportunities though.
