Tubeless Tires for Bicycle Touring? Installing Schwalbe Almotion Tires.

      @TheOutsidePerks didn't realize that the shifter worked on drop bars...I've only seen then on flat or alt bars...similar to the rholoff shifter. I do love the idea of the pinion gearbox but there's so few bike brands that are making frames for them. I've looked at the priority 600x bikes that Ryan Van Duzer rides...he was doing the TD but dropped out after 600miles due to severe saddle sores. It was rainy and cold at the start and he was never able to keep his bottom dry during the race.

    • @midwesturbanfarmstead
      @midwesturbanfarmstead 7 дней назад

      @@stevemullin1195 Was sad for Ryan that he had to drop. I was just nodding my head watching his video. I think I'm a similar kind of rider - up for a personal challenge, not into racing. The standard grip shifter for Pinion with flat bars is made in an Ergon factory. When drop bars are spec'd on Co-Motion bikes, Co-Motion has a custom shifter made out of metal. Less a grip shifter and more a rotary dial imo. Kudos to Co-Motion on this - maybe Graham can get close-up video and comment on it in a future video. Not sure if they make it in house or have somebody do it for them. I'm really not a drop bar guy, I enjoy the Jones H-bar on my Co-Motion Divide with Pinion. But that Ergon grip shifter is the only option on flat bars for Pinion, and it needs a serious re-engineering. It has made me think twice about switching to drop bars. Very unhappy with it. Clearly the cheapest, poorly functioning component on the bike. Cannot shift with any sweat on my fingers, gloves are absolutely required. Probably won't be changed by Pinion, as they appear to be moving toward electronic shifting. Thought I'd put some of these reactions down in case anyone else considering the flat bar Pinion.

    The Ortlieb mounting system is cumbersome if you need to regularly remove your handlebars. For example when boxing the bike for plane travel the mount has to be removed so that the handlebars can be taken off and prepared for boxing. The cables begin to fray after repeated mounting and unmounting requiring a cable cutter to tidy up the end so it can be rethreaded. The mounting procedure is awkward, particularly if having to mount or unmount in challenging circumstances. Otherwise I have been very happy with my Ortlieb for those reasons identified in the video.

    Hey, I’m 62. My son is 27. We are flatlanders from Maryland. We are flying out to Portland with gravel bikes. He is pulling a.Burley I plan to take the Columbia River historic Trail from Portland to Hood River. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how to use the Sierra Cascade Trail to get down to the Transamerica around Prineville. I hear that N45 is still closed. I was thinking of taking 35 south but then don’t know where to go from there particularly since folks suggest trying to avoid 26 south any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

    • @TheOutsidePerks
      @TheOutsidePerks Месяц назад

      Hey Robert, The Sierra Cascades route intersects with the TransAm route at Santiam Junction east of Eugene. The section from Hood River south to Santiam Jct is a very scenic stretch. Conversely, following the SC route up 35 to Gov't Camp then taking 26 south all the way to Prinville would be shorter with less climbing than the SC route. I rode a short section of 26 from Gov C to NF-42 intersect (per SC route). It was on a Saturday and it had a lot of traffic. Also 26 leads to ok high desert scenery (I've driven parts) vs nice forests and camping on the SC Route to Santiam Jct. No closures on any of the Forest Roads on the SC route. NF46 through the burn area was open. If you're going the distance on the TransAm you may wish to take Highway 26 to shave some miles / effort, and probably mid week would be less traffic on 26. Enjoy your journey with you Son!

    Just took a set a set of Teravail Washburn off my Salsa Journeyer and installed Green Marathon as I will be using it more for light touring than gravel grinding. I've never fought with tires more than I did on this swap WOW. Used everything in the tool box e.g. levers, soapy water, Park Tool PTS-1 and several curse words LOL. Breaking the bead was hard enough, getting the Schwalbe tires to seat was a real PITA but with persistence I got it done. I've had Marathons in the past on a touring bike and although stiff, I never had a flat and to me that's a reasonable trade-off for a little ride quality. I can't imagine wresting with those tires road-side YIKES. Makes me wonder if perhaps the WTB rims are part of the problem??? Happy trails and best of luck with the Almotions.

    I have a Trek Checkpoint that was set up tubeless by the dealer before I took delivery of the bike. With about 1,000 trouble-free miles on the stock tires, I recently went on a 300-mile tour. On about the 4th day, I got a flat which was large enough that the sealant couldn't seal it by itself. I used a bacon strip to seal the hole, something I'd never tried before, pumped up the tire, and went on my merry way. On the last day of the trip, I got another flat and didn't even know it until my riding buddy told me that my rear tire looked a little low. I pumped it back up at a coffee stop and we continued on. When we made camp I found the underside of my top bag to be completely sprayed with sealant. I'd gotten a puncture and it sealed up without me doing anything. At around 1,300 miles my rear tire is about warn out and I'll be replacing the tires shortly. Schwalbe is on my shortlist. I will definitely be sticking with tubeless.

      @@oreocarlton3343 The trip was in Florida where, I'm told, a lack of snow means that the roads aren't plowed and thus the shoulders accumulate junk over the years. I certainly saw a lot of it compared to the roads in Washington State.

      Thanks for the comment Billy. I've been hiking in the Sierra's for over 40 years and Sword Lake is a stand out as it's a relatively easy hike in to and oh so beautiful. I was there again this past Aug 2023 and enjoyed 2 nights of solitude.

    FYI - according to videos and material from Ortlieb the way you are securing the classic bag is incorrect and will cause wear sooner. You are not supposed to clip on top after rolling as it creates deep creases in the material and reduces the life of the bag. Rather clip on each side to the straps below.

    Great video. I am in the market for a bicycle just like yours. Actually, I could see me buying your exact bicycle, color and all. I do have some concern over the noise that you posted due to the pinion gear, so I will have to think about that more. Wonder if a Rohloff would be less noisy? I do sort of want the pinion. Very cool color.

      Thanks commenting Curtis. For clarity, the Pinion gearbox itself does not make any noise. It’s the Industry Nine rear hub that has a noisy free wheel when coasting. Conversely, the Rohloff seems like a good option too, it would replace the I9 hub on the rear wheel so less noise for sure.

    Nice trip through the Willamette Valley from a homesick valley native “temporarily” displaced in Arizona for the past 2 1/2 years. By the way most of those hay fields are actually rye grass and it causes a lot of people to have allergic reactions. Safe travels my friend!

      Thanks for the comment Larry! Yeah I rarely have any allergy issues with the grasses here in NorCal, but that Willamette Rye Grass really made my eyes water and run. You being displaced in AZ is not so bad this time of year (fall/winter).
