  • In this final episode of my first attempt to ride a few sections of the ACA's Sierra Cascades Route, I hang out for the evening with Brantley and Mary Beth w/BBB Adventures, then head off towards Hood River Oregon riding solo down the Columbia River Gorge. With soggy weather, road closures and unplanned logistics, my route has to change. The ride down the gorge provides some nice scenery, easy accommodations, and access to PDX and a rental car home. I plan on picking up the trail in Hood River next summer. Thanks for watching!

Yay! Busses, Bikes, and Beers! We have driven that road along the Columbia River Gorge. Love the falls and Cascade Locks.

Brantley and Mary Beth seem like a fun couple. It was fun to run into them and compare notes on bikes. Thanks for the comment Craig!

Can definitely appreciate the “need’ for a cup of coffee in those times. Can also understand the necessity to change on these tours which is more common than one might think

Yes, coffee makes the wheels go round! I am hoping to go back to Portland and pick up where I left off in the next year or two. In hindsight I was a few weeks too early to stay on the ACA route.

Great. Looking forward seeing your adventure. Who knows maybe I do it some day when I get tired riding here in Florida.

I found your channel a year ago. I've done a few short bike tours since and am inspired to Rock the Rhrine next summer. Thanks the inspiration.

Thanks for the comment Charles. I hope you are able to get to Europe and do some riding, it is a real treat. Eurovelo 15 is a very good first foray into foreign bike travel. I'm hoping to do another tour in Europe at some point.

Enjoyed watching the journey my friend! Really beautiful part of the country up there. I will have to put that on my bucket list!
Like most things in Life, rare is it that everything goes as planned. Which is why I never make plans.
I just do things on the spur of the moment and should something come up, I just adjust whenever I get to that "bridge".
Just being able to be doing your journey and having the opportunity to do so, you are very fortunate...
I envy that! Maybe someday I can do the same. In the meantime, I will continue watching your adventures.
    Your videos are very inspirational!
Take care of yourself my friend

Thanks for the kind words and feedback. I was disappointed that I did not get further down my planned route but in hindsight the ride down the River Gorge towards Portland was an extra bonus I did not plan on. Yes, it seems rare when a lengthy trip goes completely to plan. My last 3 tours have all ended differently than planned. Se la vie!

When you were in the tunnel I was like "perfect time for the helinox style chair" and you turn the camera around and there one is! No way I'm leaving mine at home when I leave for touring

Hey, I’m 62. My son is 27. We are flatlanders from Maryland. We are flying out to Portland with gravel bikes. He is pulling a.Burley I plan to take the Columbia River historic Trail from Portland to Hood River. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how to use the Sierra Cascade Trail to get down to the Transamerica around Prineville. I hear that N45 is still closed. I was thinking of taking 35 south but then don’t know where to go from there particularly since folks suggest trying to avoid 26 south any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Robert, The Sierra Cascades route intersects with the TransAm route at Santiam Junction east of Eugene. The section from Hood River south to Santiam Jct is a very scenic stretch. Conversely, following the SC route up 35 to Gov't Camp then taking 26 south all the way to Prinville would be shorter with less climbing than the SC route. I rode a short section of 26 from Gov C to NF-42 intersect (per SC route). It was on a Saturday and it had a lot of traffic. Also 26 leads to ok high desert scenery (I've driven parts) vs nice forests and camping on the SC Route to Santiam Jct. No closures on any of the Forest Roads on the SC route. NF46 through the burn area was open. If you're going the distance on the TransAm you may wish to take Highway 26 to shave some miles / effort, and probably mid week would be less traffic on 26. Enjoy your journey with you Son!

I've heard that at least a section of I-84 between Hood River and Cascade Locks isn't recommended. You didn't mention any problem. How was that section just west of Hood River?

There is good shoulder on the stretches of I-84 I rode, but lots of traffic. I've definitely ridden worse. The other option is to ride on the old highway (30) or on 14 on the other side of the river, both add quite a bit of climbing and miles but are more scenic and have less traffic. I was taking the most direct route.
